Creation Singles Poll, Part One - 1983 to 1985

Lengthy preamble about classic labels of the past, Creation itself, and fulfilled promise, peaks, troughs, etc...

Basically, the thinking is to take the top five of each part and do a grand final eventually. Or, sack it after three, or something.

not sure i *really* love any of the ones of these that i've heard, next couple of polls will be wayyyy tougher. don't think i ever heard that moodists song - probably good? expecting jamc to run away with it. probably gonna vote for something by the jasmine minks tbh

Haino Corrida (NickB), Monday, 26 October 2015 12:40 (nine years ago)

that primal scream song is funny btw, bobby sings with about as much oomph as a slowly deflating balloon

Haino Corrida (NickB), Monday, 26 October 2015 12:41 (nine years ago)

Happy memories for me of being 15 in 1985 and discovering Creation through the JAMC and by association Primal Scream; and hearing Up the Hill and Down the Slope on Janice Long. Jasmine Minks have a strong showing here, both Loft singles are great and the Bodines were great while they lasted. How many of these are produced by Joe Foster?

mahb, Monday, 26 October 2015 14:01 (nine years ago)

love the bodines but their next couple of singles are much stronger i think - wouldn't be surprised if mcgee told them to sit on therese for a while?

CRE002 The Revolving Paint Dream Flowers in the Sky February 1984

^ This one!

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 15:09 (nine years ago)

yes, I was just playing the Creation Artifact thing, disc 1 (coincidentally it covers this time period), and that stood out as being surprisingly not awfully recorded.

I sort of rediscovered the "Million Tears" e.p. recently, so voted that. Mainly because the JMC one doesn't need my support, really...

Mark G, Monday, 26 October 2015 15:12 (nine years ago)

I've only heard a few of these, will cast my vote for either Upside Down or Why Does the Rain.

CRE001 is one of the worst songs ever recorded.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:03 (nine years ago)

You've not heard CRE010 then?

Mark G, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:16 (nine years ago)

voted for the first X-Men single for contrarian reasons and because I actually like it

these are my pincers and if you don't like them I have udders (DJ Mencap), Monday, 26 October 2015 16:19 (nine years ago)

It's funny that this thread has appeared actually, because I was thinking of doing something similar but with Factory or Mute.

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:22 (nine years ago)

Yeah, those would be good to do too. I'd vote for the Non/Smegma double-hole single, wreounge wreounge...

Mark G, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:25 (nine years ago)

Ha, no (xposts) - is the title accurate?

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:26 (nine years ago)

JAMC vs Million Tears

Honourable mentions:

Meat Whiplash, the other Pastels singles, Think by Jasmine Minks. I like the B-side of that Primal Scream single. There was an ilxor that went by It Happens, always wondered if that's where they got the name from.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 26 October 2015 16:26 (nine years ago)

More than likely, yes.

xpost Gavin: Well, it destroyed something. The £1.16 it cost someone to buy it, I'd say.

Mark G, Monday, 26 October 2015 16:29 (nine years ago)

011-020 is possibly their strongest run imo. Tough call. Could've possibly listed the b-sides which are often stronger.

Love the Meatwhiplash, JAMC, Pastels (bside of Million Tears is Baby Honey) and this:

CRE013 The X-Men Spiral Girl May 1985

I quite liked this one, but it's not on the box: The B-side "Bad Girl" is.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 11:12 (nine years ago)

Actually, a few things are missing: Les Zarjaz I'd possibly expect, but Slaughter Joe?

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 11:20 (nine years ago)

Oh, and CD2 has loads of mastering errors, like a "skrrt" noise on about seven tracks.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 12:18 (nine years ago)

^was that noise jump-out-your-seat loud on your copy? I thought my CD player was doing a death rattle but nothing bad has happened since so I forgot about it til now

Sheriff U. Agri (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 12:22 (nine years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty noticeable, to say the least.

There's been a few mentions on the Amazon page for it, it seems to be every copy.

It seems Cherry Red aren't terribly chowed about resolving things like this, apparently the "Scared to get happy" set had issues.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 12:35 (nine years ago)

I mean, I do have the "Creation Soup" set as mp3s so I could make my own replacement disc, but you know..

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 12:35 (nine years ago)

Was gonna say maybe it's a good thing I forget to sell off my Creation Soup CDs before this box set came out.

I have the C86 reissue and they put the wrong version of the Pastels song on that as well. They're a pretty shoddy company really. But they do reissue a lot of stuff.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 12:44 (nine years ago)

I sent them a message. Funnily enough, on my browser there are loads of letters missing off the page. Ironic, that.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 14:12 (nine years ago)

Had a lot of these bands on a Creation Sampler, which I lost. Seem to recall liking a lot of it, esp. The Loft

System, Thursday, 5 November 2015 00:01 (nine years ago)

voted JAMC, looking very forward to the next few rounds as there are some amazing singles coming up.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:29 (nine years ago)

Couple things:

Cherry Red were fine, they sent out a replacement cd2, and the sound is perfect as can be.

I also got a more latterday comp (free with Big Issue, back in the day) about a month ago.

Blimey, Mishka, not very good or what?

Mark G, Thursday, 5 November 2015 07:41 (nine years ago)

As weird as I feel not voting for the JAMC, man, Revolving Paint Dream were just so so soooo groovy.

La Düsseldork (Branwell with an N), Thursday, 5 November 2015 13:16 (nine years ago)

Will sort out part two soon.

so do you think everett true edits his own wikipedia page or

They became friends and when McGee started the Communication Blur club, he offered Thackray the role of compėre, stating that Thackray "was the most un-enigmatic, boring, kindest, shyest person you could ever meet – and it just appealed to my sense of humour to make him compère."[1] He was originally billed as "the legendary Jerry Thackray", eventually shortened to simply "The Legend".[1] McGee also offered him a column in his new fanzine, also called Communication Blur, but Thackray left after two issues, because he objected to McGee's proposal to put a flexidisc of The Smiths on the front cover. He instead started his own zine, The Legend!, under which name he recorded the single "73 in 83", the first to be released by McGee's Creation Records.[2] In 1984, he released a second single, "Legend Destroys the Blues", but his performing career did not take off. He puts this down to the fact that he "didn't like to perform a song more than once", although he has continued to make occasional appearances.[3]

True currently contributes columns to Sweden's Go Magazine, NYC's Bust magazine,[16] the Something Awful website[17] and writes for various Australian online publications including Mess And Noise and The Vine. A more up-to-date biography has been posted at the website for Brisbane's 2010 Unconvention seminar.[18]

His latest project is Rejected Unknown, a media/publishing company set up in response to the 33⅓ series of music books; it takes its name from the album by Daniel Johnston. The first book will be 101 Albums You Should Die Before You Hear, a take-down of the sacred cows of the rock music canon.[22]

Saw The Legend! play once in Edinburgh and I think the context given there is somehow necessary. Self-conscious, inept bands were a thing at the time but this elevated it to the level of performance art. Like a comedy routine with no jokes. It wasn't trying to be about the music or the songs or anything other than trolling the audience by being completely unable to perform.

everything, Friday, 6 November 2015 19:33 (nine years ago)

aye, sounds great

thwomp (thomp), Friday, 6 November 2015 22:28 (nine years ago)

I had his live version of "Sweet soul music" on one of my mixtapes.

He seemed to go down well on that performance.
