One of the things that I find frustrating about EDM is how the music doesn't *quite* match all the visual cues, like if you're going to have people wearing big multicoloured daisies and fluorescent wigs and stupid mouse heads, if the music is going to be a huge synthetic bastardisation of dance culture, then at least go the whole hog and make the music as big and brightly coloured and Disneyfied as possible.
This Hudson Mohawke album isn't that record, it isn't banging enough for one thing, but there's enough here sonically to point the way to what that music might look like - the Mario Kart synths on on 'Shadows', the ridiculous gospel choir on 'Ryderz', the 80s stadium rock blast on 'Brand New World', the twinkly night-before-Christmas orchestration on 'Kettles'. Meanwhile the tracks with Miguel and Jhene Aiko (both great) feel like him very much putting himself in the shop window for a particular kind of R&B production gig in the future.
The album is several months old but still feels like the sort of thing that, in previous years would have generated some discussion on ILM. And I would never in my life have expected to like it, but in the last few months it's wormed its way into becoming one of my favourite albums of the year.

I found it disappointing compared to pretty much other record he's made but should go back and give it another proper listen. Enjoying this mini-doc though:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsL2-wY9-Cs

Every time I go back to Butter I find another gem that I overlooked, some tracks are still hilariously near-unlistenable though.

Interested to hear this, I dug most of Butter a lot but the trouble I have with this kind of stuff (see also rustie) is despite how colorful and opulent and sparkly everything sounds, it's just really wearying, like I can't take more than 20 minutes or so at a time. Dunno if this is a mix/mastering issue or what (or if I'm just lame). I think the Arca album from last year really nailed this extravagant rococo vibe (it's obviously much darker and less... "neon") but that album is finished playing so quickly, leaving me wanting more. These deep thoughts have been brought to you by late capitalistic Friday burnout

This NTS mix of unreleased tracks is great, if you like HudMo:

So much better than the album that this thread was started for.

Oh, people are pretending they don't know what a quarter note pulse is, I see

I started reading and quickly knew it would be Cbat (intolerable track on otherwise great EP)liking what I hear of the new album
― nashwan, Friday, 2 September 2022 18:59 (two years ago)
Yeah Cbat is no 'Thunder Bay', but it might be ground zero for all the trap EDM that followed (but you can't blame Eddie Vedder for Creed).
Anyway I'm halfway through the new Hudmo album and it rules, maybe his best work, just a thing of beauty.
