I don't listen to either, though I'm tempted to cast a vote for the one who doesn't feel the need to mansplain Taylor Swift.

I don't think I've heard anything Rhett Miller has done in 10 years, but I still like a lot more of his songs than Ryan's. Adams is a better singer, tho. Maybe he should do an album of Old '97s songs.

something totally new, it’s the AOR of the twenty first century (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 8 November 2015 20:32 (ten years ago)

I love Rhett in spite of a largely mediocre output and his awful solo album covers. His good shit is really good. Really haven't given R.A. much of a chance, though I liked parts of his 1989. Guess he may be a bit more talented than Rhett but he's not as likeable, eh.

The don't much care for each other, or so I've heard.

Breadth vs depth. Ryan has an impressive amount of excellent material and his self-titled has me listening to him for the first time in yonks. But Rhett's early run with the 97s and his first proper solo album are deeply satisfying. I have to go with Ryan for still being relevant.

Ryan is relevant only as a novelty. Plus, last year's Old 97's album was one of their best. Rhett by miles.

i have given them both a fair shot but no and no

super well-informed discussion so far

I mean this is such a completely clueless argument that I've heard so many times over the past several weeks:

Ryan is relevant only as a novelty.

i'd like to know just how many positive reviews, high-profile press clippings and sold-out venues would RA had to have racked up post-2014 self-titled album to be considered relevant?

that said, the last Old 97s album *was* shockingly terrific, and totally worthy of sitting alongside their Hitchhike to Rhome > Wreck Yr Life > Too Far To Care run. couldn't believe how good Most Messed Up was.
