a moose as ghostly as bon iver's haunting falsetto
― tylerw, Friday, 13 November 2015 15:26 (nine years ago)
the speed with which bon iver went from "hushed" "introspective" "nice" "sensitive" guy "indie" to whiskey bros shill and hotel impresario is pretty amazing, it's like if iron and wine became the dos equis spokesman after his calexico collab.
― nomar, Friday, 13 November 2015 15:26 (nine years ago)
They will all become silhouettes in time for the opening ceremony.

I keep thinking that moose is some weird contorted ghost figure suspended by its legs.
Also, is there a giant vagina behind the front desk?

yeah i mean taking a blighted building in downtown and making it a place to listen to jazz and shit doesn't sound horrible. those electronic DJ dudes from DC do this all the time. the problem is that they tend to attract the worst clientele ever.

― rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 13 November 2015 18:14 (nine years ago)
yeah i mean it looks lame and terrible but if i did come into money i guess i'd probably want to sink it into my hometown. i fantasize a lot about buildings i'd build if i could. none of them are boutique hotels but maybe he has better financial advice than i do.
btw the "ghost" effect is actually a knock-on of the same thing: he's hired a small architecture firm based in minneapolis. their website's "team" page is seven smiling, non-hipster white people faces and a dog named otis, and they have the kind of work that small firms have - some interiors, some retail/restaurant stuff, and a handful of houses where they obviously got to stretch a little and do the kind of design the principals actually really love. this all sounds kind of mocking so i should be clear that i actually admire firms like this for staying in business and, i suspect, paying their small team well and trying their best to do good work with clients who may not "get" all the cool stuff the designers learned about in school. who knows. i spend a lot of time railing against architecture's tendency to valorize only the "star" firms (which rely on unpaid intern labor etc.), which leaves new graduates thinking there is no work in minneapolis, or eau claire. firms like this are actually the real backbone of the profession for better or worse.
and, firms like this use sketchup to do 3d modelling because it's fast, it's cheap, the work is never going to require complex curvature or wildly non-standard details and components, and clients can understand the images that come out of it. for the finishing touches, they have photoshop, or maybe photoshop elements, and so they use that to populate their renderings with people. in order to not have the people block the view, and to massage any rough edges of the pasted-in people, they fiddle with translucency. it's how these things almost always look. in another thread i would be making fun of this look, since i used to do these too and feel like i had a better handle on my sketchup/PS technique, but here, oddly, amidst the frou-frou boutiqueyness of the project itself, i kind of want to label this style of firm, and this style of rendering, as things which are boring but good.

I will say that Eaux Claires this summer was a shit-ton of fun and that it probably would have been more comfortable in this ugly hotel rather than in the UW-Eau Claire dorms
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 13 November 2015 20:22 (nine years ago)
my memories of eau claire are exactly two:
when i was a kid my brother and i would go with our grandparents on a fishing trip up to ely minnesota and we'd stop for an overnight in eau claire. it was always a saturday night and every sunday morning we'd have to check out of the hotel early so we could find a church to crash for services. my grandmother never missed them. one year we had trouble locating the church we'd planned on going to, so we drove around and around until we found one and much to my relief there was only ten minutes left in services, which was enough for my grandmother. she just wanted to get the communion cracker i guess.
my other memory is going to a store there and buying cassette tapes of 'somewhere in time' and 'seventh son of a seventh son' by iron maiden.

I don't know if it's just the effect of cheesy renderings, but it doesn't look much hipper than the suburban ct business traveler hotel I stayed in for my brother's wedding
