Don't mention The Jam around here, Brian! Unless, of course you want to join me in Dad-rock corner. I just got the 3CD At The BBC thing (free! Just subscribe to Uncut... whoops, Dad-rock! Dad-rock!)It's fantastic.

Whya re the Jam Dadrock? My Dad used to hate them and take the piss out of Paul Weller. He reckoned that by the 90's he wouldn't be around and still making music. I used to love phoning him whenever Weller had a new album out to annoy him.

I NEVER watch the music videos I own (I haven't entered the DVD age yet) so I never bother buying these things anymore.

The beeb 3cds pretty good.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

These days I don't blame your dad at all for the hate. ;-)

And yes, Beeb collection = pretty good! But what's on this DVD, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have seen this DVD thing, high up on a shelf. It is an object of perving and lust for me, but I haven't got a DVD contraption. I don't even care what's on it. I love the 'In Concert' recording introduced by Gary Crowley - let's have a magic hand for a magic band!

three years pass...
Revive, from the grave.

I finally got to see this DVD the other day. It was like somebody had grabbed my heart and plugged it into the national grid. Has there ever been a more vital live band? Jesus Christ, I think I injured my hands, feet and jaw watching it. Maybe one day I will be able to unclench.

It's the one thing I need to have The Complete Jam Lifestyle, or something. The longer Weller goes, the more that the Jam years seem like his all too brief shining moment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 December 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but what a moment.. whew

Everything post-Style Council has been awful, but my head is spinning after watching that Jam DVD, I am of a mind to write to Tony Blair and demand that P. Weller be made a Lord or something or at least Foreign Secretary.

Everything post-Style Council has been awful,

Some might add that everything post-Jam has been awful. That said, I thought there were some fine, fine moments on Wildwood. How's his new one?

Shame about his hair these days.

At our age(ish), any hair is good hair.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Fair point.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

he had really really really good hair when he was young.

I've been listening to the Jam a lot recently - everything from In The City to Sound Affects still sounds really fucking fantastic.

Dr.C, Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I always though The Gift was over-criticized/underrated, despite the much overplayed "Town Called Malice".

Anyway, yeah, I need this DVD.

I got this DVD from my local library. It's got some great moments. Some of the old vids are period pieces of course but the tv appearances and the live stuff is good. The excert from the Marc Bolan show is cool as he naturally introduces them in a really ridiculous way.

three weeks pass...
I went and bought this on Donut's birthday I think. I liked it so much I then went and bought a live recording recommended on AMG by a Nedd someone. Some of the videos are OK, some are cheesy, especially the one for "The Bitterest Pill." The live stuff is pretty great. I have two more words for you: Rick Buckler.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

I believe this Nedd fellow referred disparagingly to Paul Weller's later stylings as the work of the "Cappuccino Kidd."

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 22 December 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost I used to know his twin brother Pete quite well.
