Bee OK, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:09 (nine years ago)

Far from my favorite songs of theirs, but the Cure just because I like to vote for the Cure. Yeah.

Austin, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:13 (nine years ago)

44 The Boo Radleys - "Lazarus" was the winner of our Boo Radleys Poll but sadly didn't make the cut. i would have voted for it in a heartbeat (even if i was the only one who didn't vote for it in that poll).

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:13 (nine years ago)

it will probably be the only Cure appearance in these 90's polls as well.

xpost

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:16 (nine years ago)

Has to be T.R.O.Y.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:21 (nine years ago)

went w/ "it was a good day" which is still prob my favorite rap song ever

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:33 (nine years ago)

Jesus built my goddamn hotrod!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:46 (nine years ago)

I like but do not love many of these songs. It might be "Nightswimming". Or it might be "Jump".

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 November 2015 02:57 (nine years ago)

L7 wrote my favourite grunge song so I guess it's that. Slightly more acclaimed than Blind Melon, oh lovely...

Glad the critics saw through the shlock of Whitney and went for Creep instead. People who don't start laughing uncontrollably at the sentiment expressed therein are my bread and butter.

Adam J Duncan, Thursday, 19 November 2015 03:16 (nine years ago)

Laughing uncontrollably is precisely what I do when I hear "Creep."

WTF is "Tears In Heaven" doing here

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 November 2015 04:00 (nine years ago)

I'll be the only one voting for Stereo MC's. Primarily due to a significant psychedelic experience in 1992 that still brings me joy. Those REM songs make me cringe just reading the titles but at the time, I loved that album.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 19 November 2015 04:58 (nine years ago)

Hmm no great favorites of mine but will probably go with G Thang, The Future or Whitney

Thanks for the Spotify list!

niels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 07:15 (nine years ago)

Damn I wish I was your lover p good too

Going through these lists can't help thinking about the whole rockism poptimism discussion - for some reason I always figured rockism was elitist, a set of aesthetic values propagated by critics, but maybe it's more of a a populist interpretation of criticism? There's a lot of great pop on these lists.

niels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 09:21 (nine years ago)

I agree!

paolo, Thursday, 19 November 2015 09:44 (nine years ago)

Not a great list, the incredible ground breaking dance music that came out that year is woefully under-represented. Where the hell are The Prodigy, for example? I voted Show Me Love, shout out to Passing Me By as well.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 19 November 2015 09:47 (nine years ago)

True about the lack of house and dance music. 'Show Me Love' is an all-time favourite of mine so got my vote without hesitation.

dubmill, Thursday, 19 November 2015 10:02 (nine years ago)

Re:Dance yeah these polls are about a lot more than onanism; props to Bee OK for exposing the canonisation.

¡The Lakers beat the Supersonics!

Adam J Duncan, Thursday, 19 November 2015 10:54 (nine years ago)

'92 was an embarrassment of riches, I'm realizing. Limited solely to charting singles and songs that got MTV play, this is stuff that I prefer to at least half of this list (some of whose absence is shocking, particularly with stuff like Clapton showing up):

Black Sheep - "The Choice Is Yours"
Ce Ce Peniston - "We Got A Love Thing" and "Finally"
Charles & Eddie - "Would I Lie To You"
Classic Example - "It's Alright"
Clubland - "Set Me Free"
Cover Girls - "Funk Boutique"
The Cure - "High"
Das EFX - "They Want EFX"
Extreme - "Rest In Peace"
Faith No More - "Midlife Crisis" and "Everything's Ruined"
Frente! - "Labour Of Love" and "Bizarre Love Triangle"
Indigo Girls - "Galileo"
INXS - "Not Enough Time"
Jade - "I Wanna Love You"
kd lang - "Constant Craving"
KLF - "Justified And Ancient"
Kym Sims - "Too Blind To See It"
Lidell Townsell - "Nu Nu"
A Lighter Shade Of Brown - "Sunday Afternoon"
Lush - "For Love"
MC Brains - "Oochie Coochie"
MC Luscious - "Boom! I Got Your Boyfriend"
Michael Penn - "Long Way Down (Look What The Cat Drug In)"
Morrissey - "Tomorrow"
Neil Young - "Harvest Moon"
Neneh Cherry - "Buddy X"
PM Dawn - "I'd Die Without You"
Shonen Knife - "Riding On The Rocket"
Simply Red - "Stars"
Sir Mix-A-Lot - "Baby Got Back"
Sloan - "Underwhelmed"
Soul Asylum - "Somebody To Shove"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Plush"
Sugar - "Helpless" and "If I Can't Change Your Mind"
Sugarcubes - "Hit"
Sundays - "Love"
Suzanne Vega - "Blood Makes Noise" and "99.9 F°"
TLC - "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg"
Ween - "Push Th' Little Daisies"
Wrecks-N-Effect - "Rump Shaker"
10,000 Maniacs - "These Are Days"
2 Unlimited - "Get Ready For This"

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 November 2015 14:02 (nine years ago)

Faith No More - "Midlife Crisis" and "Everything's Ruined"

Oh yeah, Midlife Crisis is a particular oversight!

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 19 November 2015 14:14 (nine years ago)

PJ Harvey over RATM. Why that Pavement song??

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:36 (nine years ago)

Old Lunch, toss in "I Love Your Smile" and you got a deal.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:41 (nine years ago)

Shanice is 1991, Alfred! Very very high among my '91 (and all-time) rankings, though.

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:43 (nine years ago)

In the United States it peaked early '92 though.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:46 (nine years ago)

This will be the last one for a couple of weeks since next week is a holiday.

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 November 2015 21:36 (nine years ago)

Passin' Me By, such a classic

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Thursday, 19 November 2015 21:41 (nine years ago)

Voting for "Creep," one of the iconic songs of the early 90's.

the future is now, Friday, 20 November 2015 15:01 (nine years ago)

Unless "Hazard" is really a late 91 going into 92 hit, I would make room for it on my list

Master of Treacle, Friday, 20 November 2015 15:05 (nine years ago)

"It Was A Good Day" over "Show Me Love"

welltris (crüt), Friday, 20 November 2015 15:06 (nine years ago)

Possibly the best year for singles in a really great 5-year span. Bummer about that #1 tho.

thread of getting sw0le and lena jokes (Eric H.), Friday, 20 November 2015 15:13 (nine years ago)

4 445 R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts

Took me about 10-15 listens before I realized, oh they're not taking the piss -- they're serious. Vastly schlockier than Whitney.

Voting either "Sheela-Na-Gig" or Cube.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 20 November 2015 15:34 (nine years ago)

Everybody Hurts is one of the worst songs ever recorded (and may be directly responsible for Coldplay)

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 20 November 2015 15:39 (nine years ago)

The Cure - Friday I'm in Love
En Vogue - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)
Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth - They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)
PJ Harvey - Sheela Na Gig

^^ this is a goddamn great sequence

The Pharcyde - Passin' Me By

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:04 (nine years ago)

Awful list! Not sure if awful year. Where are all the Shoegazers? Gonna go with Suede or L7 or Sonic Youth or Pulp.

daavid, Friday, 20 November 2015 17:15 (nine years ago)

the presence of The Pharcyde refutes that notion

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 November 2015 17:25 (nine years ago)

friday i'm in love

flappy bird, Friday, 20 November 2015 17:35 (nine years ago)

There are so many great songs on this list! Think I'll vote for So What'cha Want though.

I get throwed by referring to album release dates rather than single release dates. Some sweet singles in your list I'd relegated to '91.

Bee OK, Friday, 20 November 2015 21:31 (nine years ago)

Votive for "babies" one of the best stories in a song

Bee OK, Friday, 20 November 2015 21:32 (nine years ago)

Stupid auto correct

Bee OK, Friday, 20 November 2015 21:32 (nine years ago)

I voted for "Here," it's the only one on the list that I know that gets more than "oh yeah, that one's good" from me.

Would have been a different story with the Michael Penn or the Stone Temple Pilots up for voting, though.

Tom Violence, Friday, 20 November 2015 22:01 (nine years ago)

thanks for the Spotify list, has been a fun listen.

Bee OK, Sunday, 22 November 2015 00:09 (nine years ago)

too young for seapunk (Moodles), Sunday, 22 November 2015 01:15 (nine years ago)

voted for Robin S. but looking through the list "They Reminisce Over You" and "Tennessee" struck me as an interesting pair... these very emotional rap songs about family, history, and loss that both make me cry like a motherfucker every time I hear them

The Reverend, Sunday, 22 November 2015 04:23 (nine years ago)

I dare say they're the best rap songs on this list but maybe I'm just tired of hearing "It Was a Good Day" and "G Thang"

The Reverend, Sunday, 22 November 2015 04:24 (nine years ago)

No, you're absolutely right on. They're both miles ahead of Cube and Dre.

Austin, Sunday, 22 November 2015 04:32 (nine years ago)

I've been listening to Mecca and the Soul Brother since this poll was created. I want to read more damn love for that record.

how the hell is "Jump Around" that high?

The Reverend, Monday, 23 November 2015 11:50 (nine years ago)

I'm realizing that this list could just as easily be named "Popular Hits From Albums Containing Much Better Songs: 1992 Edition".

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Monday, 23 November 2015 13:24 (nine years ago)

someone said jump and we asked how high xpost

Mark G, Monday, 23 November 2015 14:09 (nine years ago)

Amazing how much less I like this than 1990. It was the end of college and I was jaded.

Would still happily listen to

Creep
It's a Shame about Ray
Pretend We're Dead
No Rain
Cantaloop
Sexy MF

but of these "Creep" and "Sexy MF" are probably the only ones with a large enough presence in my life to consider voting for.

Rough order, not thinking too hard:

L7 - Pretend We're Dead
Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
Madonna - Erotica
Sonic Youth - 100%
Radiohead - Creep

lots of honorable mentions
