Barry White needs kidney transplant
October 31 2002
US soul star Barry White, whose deep voice has made him a classic romantic accessory for nearly 30 years, needs to undergo kidney transplant surgery, his record label said today.
The burly 58-year-old singer needs to replace the organ that has been damaged by years of high blood pressure.
"He has started a course of maintenance dialysis therapy," Def Jam Music Group said in a statement.
"Once stabilised, he will be a candidate for a kidney transplant."
The label revealed earlier this month that the singer had begun dialysis after kidney failure.
White is famed for songs such as Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe, and You're the First, the Last, My Everything.
He started dialysis last month.
White, a great-grandfather, was hospitalised in August 1999 for a blood pressure problem and was forced to cancel several concerts.
He reached the peak of his fame in the 1970s, but won his first two Grammy awards in 2000 for his album "Staying Power".
