Bee OK, Thursday, 3 December 2015 00:32 (nine years ago)

and what a year, i can easily vote for 15 of these and possible more.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:15 (nine years ago)

Off the top of my head, I'm stuck between "Fuck and Run" and "Go West," but let me listen before voting...

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:20 (nine years ago)

Go West is in my top three club anthems, so that.

Adam J Duncan, Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:27 (nine years ago)

Want you
to choose
Cannonball

Chris L, Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:43 (nine years ago)

Very predictable:

1. Beck - Loser
2. Liz Phair - Fuck and Run
3. Cypress Hill - Insane in the Brain
4. Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box
5. Snoop Doggy Dogg - Gin and Juice
6. Elastica - Stutter

If John Lydon made a record in 1993, I was completely oblivious to it at the time.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:52 (nine years ago)

cannonball over rebel girl, big time sensuality, c.r.e.a.m.

balls, Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:09 (nine years ago)

Wow -- didn't know "Stutter" got such an early release.

That top 30 is unfuckwithable.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:11 (nine years ago)

Is it? I mean...

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
The Cranberries - Linger

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:15 (nine years ago)

1. C.R.E.A.M.
2. Rebel Girl
3. Go West

jmm, Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:17 (nine years ago)

"Linger" is brilliant.

Is it? I mean...

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
The Cranberries - Linger

― Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko)

on a mix tape (and that's where I've saved them) they sound good.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:24 (nine years ago)

It's possible that I'm holding The Cranberries' later work against "Linger," which is certainly pretty enough, and while I don't much like "Are You Gonna Go My Way," but at this point it is impossible for me to tell how much 2+ decades of overexposure has played into this. "All I Wanna Do," though, is and always dreadful.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 December 2015 02:27 (nine years ago)

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
The Cranberries - Linger

love all these songs, cranberries turned to complete bonorific garbage immediately after but that first album is decent third tier dream pop sundays knockoff. sheryl crow's next two albums were alot better but i've always liked the rushing wooziness of 'all i wanna do'. lenny kravitz was only good when he was robbing graves, this is probably his zenith, that album is wonderful and hilarious as well, he was our gallagher brother only so much better when all is said and done. as long as i could tune out the 'see this is what these kids don't understand - musicianship!', i could hang w/ lenny and sheryl, score some good weed and booze, listen to frampton comes alive, plus hanging w/ lenny you'd probably just fall into amazing pussy, like a lamprey.

I am surprised to hear ppl praising Linger. The Cranberries were horrible and annoying from day one imo.

didn't vote for it, but yeah 'are you gonna go my way' is grebt

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:03 (nine years ago)

Breeders
Mazzy Star
Suede
Wu-Tang
New Order
Dino Jr
Bikini Kill
PSB
Blur
Elastica
Digable Planets

All still great.

wait - really?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:06 (nine years ago)

"Linger" and "Dreams" are beautiful! They were to The Sundays what Oasis were to Suede and Lenny Kravitz to Terence Trent D'Arby.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:07 (nine years ago)

Knowing ILM, I'm surprised 'Regret' hasn't gotten its props. It's in my top five.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:07 (nine years ago)

"Linger" also the last gasp of the late '80s English dream pop sound that had had college radio in a vise; the production suggests they wanted arena dream pop on the first go round.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:08 (nine years ago)

i'm just saying when lenny had that incident last year and laughed it off i kinda got the impression he's probably a chill dude. also before he tried to go contemporary or whatever he was fine for what he was. i mean i like joey bad4$$, the white stripes, etc also. that kind of thing isn't as easy as it looks. look at sean lennon.

Wait I forgot about Dreams! Ok, I take back the mean thing I said about The Cranberries. Dreams redeems them but just barely.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:17 (nine years ago)

I always think of Claire Danes in "My So-Called Life" being moody and difficult while listening to "Dreams."

Adam J Duncan, Thursday, 3 December 2015 03:55 (nine years ago)

I like almost all of these songs, even the ones by artists that I would generally say I dislike. Good year! Tough call!

The Featureless Mash That Was Once My Face (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 December 2015 05:01 (nine years ago)

Okay but wait. Wait wait wait. I just realized that this list is completely invalid because it doesn't include "If", which is indisputably one of the greatest singles of the '90s. #69?!? What the everloving fuck.

The Featureless Mash That Was Once My Face (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 December 2015 13:58 (nine years ago)

Some all-timers on this list. Also some head-scratchers. Voted "Cherub Rock," looking all dejected there at #39.

Sam Weller, Thursday, 3 December 2015 14:06 (nine years ago)

"Rez" is on here but "Cowgirl" isn't? Guess I'll go with "Insane in the Membrane" then.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 3 December 2015 14:22 (nine years ago)

Again, the neglect of dance music bugs me. I might go for Gin and Juice, or possibly one of the Bjorks, which are I think the most genuinely forward-looking things here.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 3 December 2015 14:27 (nine years ago)

Generally the rock choices are very bland (Mr Jones? Fuck off!) I'll admit to a soft spot for Linger.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 3 December 2015 14:28 (nine years ago)

It's frankly asinine that nothing from janet. made it into the top 40.

The Featureless Mash That Was Once My Face (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 December 2015 17:47 (nine years ago)

Most days I prefer Cherub Rock, but Today is one of the greatest pop songs of all time. Easy choice.

CREAM. Inspecta Deck's verse is the best verse in all of rap music

paolo, Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:32 (nine years ago)

2 240 The Breeders - Cannonball
6 689 Suede - Animal Nitrate
10 877 New Order - Regret

One of these.

Turrican, Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:36 (nine years ago)

xxpost Relative to its (admittedly superior) predecessors, yes, but you'd hope that 20+ years would be enough time for everyone to recognize its superlative singles.

The Featureless Mash That Was Once My Face (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:36 (nine years ago)

Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode both had better singles in '93 than 'Go West' and 'I Feel You'

Turrican, Thursday, 3 December 2015 18:37 (nine years ago)

that was interesting, so i looked it up:

Depeche Mode:

"I Feel You" 1993 UK = 8 US = 37 RIAA: Gold]
Songs of Faith and Devotion
"Walking in My Shoes" UK= 14 US= 69
"Condemnation" UK = 9 US= did not place

Pet Shop Boys:

"Can You Forgive Her?" 1993 UK= 7 US = 109
"Go West" UK = 2 US 106
"I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing" UK = 13 US did not place

Bee OK, Friday, 4 December 2015 02:00 (nine years ago)

PSB were still huge in England + Europe and were at a new spike in their popularity; Depeche were coming off an American breakthrough and were a massive touring operation, unlike PSB.

I had "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing" on my year-end in '93; like it a thousand times better than "Go West."

I think Songs of Faith and Devotion made it to #1 on both sides of the Atlantic, so they were undoubtedly on a career high... for all their success overseas though, it seemed to take UK critics a long time to accept Depeche Mode - something I don't really think happened until the Ultra period, weirdly.

Turrican, Friday, 4 December 2015 20:26 (nine years ago)

Voted "Cannonball" because there's something truly singular about it, it's like no other song I love. But deep down I have to admit that "Linger" is truly the song that wraps itself around my heart from that year.

How the f Counting Crows got popular against this level of competition I will never be able to understand

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 5 December 2015 05:57 (nine years ago)

Tindersticks, all the way. (With Wu-Tang in second and 'Rez' in third.)

Personal favorites:

6 689 Suede - Animal Nitrate
18 1279 Björk - Venus As a Boy
32 2235 Jeru the Damaja - Come Clean

but this is a scientific poll and best song has to be "Fade into You" or "C.R.E.A.M."

"Cannonball" is one of those songs I can never recall when I see the title, but I instantly recognize the guitar riff (if it had an onomatopoeic title I'd probably remember it...) - catchy stuff.

Maybe you had to be there, maybe I'm just crazy ignorant, but I really don't understand how it's more than a novelty hit - better than CREAM? Feel free to school me.
