how do u guys feel about soulection type herbdom growing on the low?

id say overall an unpromising direction but for now actually quite enjoyable

I will say rappers id previously dismissed as bland revivalists or one-dimensional lyrical acrobats—Logic, GoldLink—gain something in the context of these DJ sets, kind of a midpoint between chance the rapper's Surf, chillout lounge CDs, post-dilla stoner instrumentals, vague Real Music ideology, umm...i'm missing a few ingredients but Ninja Tune isn't my bag exactly

also whatever your concerns its organic origins make it inherently superior to lame top-down stations like dr. dre's pharmacy imo...or the predictable Taste genuflecting of OVO radio.

i use spotify like basically never for reasons of realness, mine, but by some strange mathemagicals it somehow seemed to have and hold this perfect conception of a specific version of me in the late 90s

seems a good kid, smart, talented certainly, don't find any reason to be compelled by him but then i am old and perhaps require excessive new stimulae

as the quoted opener suggests my interest in soulection is really only as a data point in a diff constellation entirely (dance music type shit) with a side curiosity about how a herbdom i was once familiar with has evolved tribally/generationally (gilles peterson thru benji b axis if u like)

don't think the show as is is v pertinent to any current ilxors, a fresher jaxon or a boring alt-reality reverend i guess

Benji b was someone I thought of when it came to this show for sure. He came through Chicago once and I was v pleased with how openly he flirted with dance music which none of these ppl really seem to do (unfortunately), except as a tonal color for making goldlink seem more exciting

Anyway you might be right about present day ilx but that's in part, I think, bc ilx is a rapidly aging community

That said the reason I think this could/ may have a substantially larger audience on ilx is for one simple reason: it's American. We don't really have quite the same precedence for it

heh, this dude who cooks for an event I dj at keeps trying to push this type of stuff on me like "oh you should play this at the next party!" and it's like... do you not notice that I'm mostly playing banging 130-160 bpm dance stuff or breaking it down halftempo with street rap?

re american interest - yeah idk shows of these sorts have generally always traded in/prided themselves on a non-parochial outernationalism (plus functionally theyre broadcast in dead of night slots to be disseminated online by niche listeners worldwide)

the difference with soulection i guess is the cali localisation both in terms of new talent (nicely coinciding with diy soundcloud edit culture - very crucial) and also cali as an exportable vibe, always a winner

it's slightly more insular than the standard acquisitive trainspotter culture elsewhere but i'm not sure i see anything specifically ~american~ at play either unless i'm underestimating the power of beats radio

kinda bored by most of this vibe though, even if it is impeccably produced. it's sort of like Brainfeeder with the edges sanded off? i'm not sure when exactly it blew up, but i remember checking out some of Sango's music on bandcamp when it was under the radar and enjoying it, then next time i looked he/they were fucking huge (on soundcloud at least).

i did once download and burn to disc a benji b show, and i bumped it in my car for a good three months. he had waajeed from platinum pied pipers on and during his set he played a bunch of classic detroit techno and house which apparently got waajeed up and dancing in the studio. that was like 2007 iirc

'girl' is gr8 but the whole lp is classic

I should mention i think whatever role it is these guys have played in catapaulting Smino deserves some recognition

I like Smino and especially Monte Booker, but am otherwise so completely over the 'chill beats to study to' aesthetic

Well not literally no audience i just mean I think it’s further from relevance than it was before ... and I mean pop as in popular rather than a “pop” aesthetic (although it was always kind of “with the edges sanded off” no?)

Ok, I have no sense of what is actually popular, at least in terms of the gaps between underground/critically-acclaimed stuff > independent but relatively popular like Soulection (maybe an equivalent in another world would be Vulfpeck?) > actual mainstream globally popular rap/r&b/pop. It can be very hard to tell the difference online sometimes (and I know this is your game).
