first ref to soulection on ilx appears to be RTC in the disclosure thread:

i'd suggest to investors that it could be a good time to wheel it back to 06/07 and buy up stocks in karizma as ppl get bored of regular ouse rhythms and kaytranda/soulection type herbdom grows on the low

how do u guys feel about soulection type herbdom growing on the low?

id say overall an unpromising direction but for now actually quite enjoyable

I will say rappers id previously dismissed as bland revivalists or one-dimensional lyrical acrobats—Logic, GoldLink—gain something in the context of these DJ sets, kind of a midpoint between chance the rapper's Surf, chillout lounge CDs, post-dilla stoner instrumentals, vague Real Music ideology, umm...i'm missing a few ingredients but Ninja Tune isn't my bag exactly

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 11 December 2015 00:44 (ten years ago)

also whatever your concerns its organic origins make it inherently superior to lame top-down stations like dr. dre's pharmacy imo...or the predictable Taste genuflecting of OVO radio.

good article on this phenomenon: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/dec/04/soulection-hip-hop-collective-genres-a-thing-of-the-past

ha i'd been curious abt what u had brewing after that thread bump, knew it'd come

only ever listened to a handful of shows over the years, kinda just boring 2 me tbh and never brought me much closer to shading out a peripheral hunch about their place as influential vibe locus and the scale/shape of it. needed to meet a listener really

idk i have a bunch of half thoughts, nothing coalesced for presentation (plus ca change)

partial tagcloud: cali vibe tourism, returning privileging of sincerity in the modern age, font of alt r&b (🔥 take: joe kay the nu melvin lindsay?), herb nuum, reflections of rtc youth, pdf playlists were cool before ocr

guess i'd better listen to one of these today

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 05:35 (ten years ago)

lol spotify discover weekly gave me 'sober thoughts' by goldlink for like a month straight (wasnt even rly aware of him as a soulection product)

i use spotify like basically never for reasons of realness, mine, but by some strange mathemagicals it somehow seemed to have and hold this perfect conception of a specific version of me in the late 90s

anyway i did enjoy it but/because it reminded me so much of something from simply by tek9, aka dego from 4hero's forgotten 99 undie rap album featuring jean grae and dudes from hiero etc which at the time i played the shit out of for no reason the way we did back then

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxxjk0_V_sM&index=2&list=PLPtXZPzgXBPdoF2KdFq8sItJX8DXLXJBC

not that this is a relevant investigatory angle at all but might as well unburden

These tracks are so hand picked. Each song compliments the other so well. Much love to you and yours. Get your mind off all the negativity in the world and vibe with us for these 120 minutes.

this is the descrip under the most recent show soundcloud

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 06:26 (ten years ago)

This is the only way Kyle has a career IMO

May as well use this thread to ask what rtc thinks of Chance the rapper

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 11 December 2015 07:23 (ten years ago)

seems a good kid, smart, talented certainly, don't find any reason to be compelled by him but then i am old and perhaps require excessive new stimulae

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 09:05 (ten years ago)

as the quoted opener suggests my interest in soulection is really only as a data point in a diff constellation entirely (dance music type shit) with a side curiosity about how a herbdom i was once familiar with has evolved tribally/generationally (gilles peterson thru benji b axis if u like)

don't think the show as is is v pertinent to any current ilxors, a fresher jaxon or a boring alt-reality reverend i guess

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 09:22 (ten years ago)

I agree and don't

Benji b was someone I thought of when it came to this show for sure. He came through Chicago once and I was v pleased with how openly he flirted with dance music which none of these ppl really seem to do (unfortunately), except as a tonal color for making goldlink seem more exciting

Anyway you might be right about present day ilx but that's in part, I think, bc ilx is a rapidly aging community

That said the reason I think this could/ may have a substantially larger audience on ilx is for one simple reason: it's American. We don't really have quite the same precedence for it

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 11 December 2015 09:37 (ten years ago)

heh, this dude who cooks for an event I dj at keeps trying to push this type of stuff on me like "oh you should play this at the next party!" and it's like... do you not notice that I'm mostly playing banging 130-160 bpm dance stuff or breaking it down halftempo with street rap?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc for Gaz Coombes? (The Reverend), Friday, 11 December 2015 10:49 (ten years ago)

re american interest - yeah idk shows of these sorts have generally always traded in/prided themselves on a non-parochial outernationalism (plus functionally theyre broadcast in dead of night slots to be disseminated online by niche listeners worldwide)

the difference with soulection i guess is the cali localisation both in terms of new talent (nicely coinciding with diy soundcloud edit culture - very crucial) and also cali as an exportable vibe, always a winner

it's slightly more insular than the standard acquisitive trainspotter culture elsewhere but i'm not sure i see anything specifically ~american~ at play either unless i'm underestimating the power of beats radio

benji b i'm not a fan of

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 12:15 (ten years ago)

im sure this stuff will drive me up teh wall in 8 months but for now its cool imo

essence of jaxon/vahid/sa-ra (not as good as sa ra but nonetheless)

i also enjoy the sounds of monte booker

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 11 December 2015 12:44 (ten years ago)

cali localisation both in terms of new talent <---------beat scene

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Friday, 11 December 2015 13:03 (ten years ago)

i agree that monte booker is super dope.

kinda bored by most of this vibe though, even if it is impeccably produced. it's sort of like Brainfeeder with the edges sanded off? i'm not sure when exactly it blew up, but i remember checking out some of Sango's music on bandcamp when it was under the radar and enjoying it, then next time i looked he/they were fucking huge (on soundcloud at least).

"Brainfeeder with the edges sanded off"

that sounds about right

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Friday, 11 December 2015 21:20 (ten years ago)

speaking of monte booker, just started listening to this and it's really good (vocals sure are Chance-y though): https://soundcloud.com/sminoworld/sets/blkjuptr

expertly crafted referential display name (Jordan), Friday, 11 December 2015 21:27 (ten years ago)

Yeah his chance-y ness bugs me although I really like "ciabatta," posted that in the rap thread awhile back

Ravyn Lenae is obv the real star of the squad IMO

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 11 December 2015 21:32 (ten years ago)

so wait my true essence is herbdom?

ouch ;_;

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2015 22:50 (ten years ago)

ftr i have no idea what soulelection is and i only know kaytranda from the (quite excellent) song by the internet called "girl"

i did once download and burn to disc a benji b show, and i bumped it in my car for a good three months. he had waajeed from platinum pied pipers on and during his set he played a bunch of classic detroit techno and house which apparently got waajeed up and dancing in the studio. that was like 2007 iirc

the late great, Friday, 11 December 2015 22:54 (ten years ago)

'girl' is gr8 but the whole lp is classic

r|t|c, Friday, 11 December 2015 23:05 (ten years ago)

this has been huge in clubs in Seattle for a few years (really reaching perennial, won't go away status)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmZw5dlmXxw

I hear his "Be Your Girl" mix out sometimes too (altho I play the Perempay & Dee version personally, bc I'm not capable of letting funky house go)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KByCyG2_3qY

nb: Kaytra is great, but it's hard to go further in that direction without getting boring af

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Friday, 11 December 2015 23:05 (ten years ago)

ive never listened to a full episode of this, btw

platinum pied pipers/sa-ra/the new downbeat-rnb thing: why don't i like this stuff more?

the late great, Saturday, 12 December 2015 02:18 (ten years ago)

Haha yes this is definitely the lineage I was thinking of w/r/t this thread

I see some ambivalences never change

I should mention i think whatever role it is these guys have played in catapaulting Smino deserves some recognition

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:30 (six years ago)

I like Smino and especially Monte Booker, but am otherwise so completely over the 'chill beats to study to' aesthetic

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:38 (six years ago)

It's kind of sad that all the years of post-Dilla, post-Low End Theory beatmaking have now been boiled down to "lo-fi" (horrible descriptor)

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:39 (six years ago)

Yeah I mean I think those YouTube playlists & soulections refusal to lean pop in anyway left them w no audience .. like maxim magazine in the era of internet porn

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:41 (six years ago)

Oh I think sango is good too

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:42 (six years ago)

Oh really, no audience? I just assumed they were still ruling streaming algorithms for people looking for tasteful background music. My issue is that it's too pop, the watered-down version of what once felt exciting, lol.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:49 (six years ago)

Well not literally no audience i just mean I think it’s further from relevance than it was before ... and I mean pop as in popular rather than a “pop” aesthetic (although it was always kind of “with the edges sanded off” no?)

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 20:24 (six years ago)

Ok, I have no sense of what is actually popular, at least in terms of the gaps between underground/critically-acclaimed stuff > independent but relatively popular like Soulection (maybe an equivalent in another world would be Vulfpeck?) > actual mainstream globally popular rap/r&b/pop. It can be very hard to tell the difference online sometimes (and I know this is your game).
