in my defense i've never really heard levine in "want to want me," and "can't feel my face" is more about dissolving oneself into someone else than excitement or desire per se. the latter's all about build and release and the former's more of a tense glass pyramid, which is why i get it when people say they can't get any joy from it.

jess glynne is truly a chart curiosity for the ages

derulo himself is not relevant but certainly i'd agree there's a direct correlation between the song's synthetic quality and the dissociated/mediated/processual state of "wanting to want". in this respect he excels as modern demagogue

the plastic male nipple is a signifier not only erotic but also vestigial/atavistic (much like disco) - it is the ersatz humanity of the song
