"tell us about it green"

some of the tracks here seem underwritten to me but there's still lots to like about this record. i could choose any of half the songs as favorite.

lol xp

Boom! There She Was is an all-time fave for me

ciderpress, Monday, 4 January 2016 02:31 (eight years ago) link

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 January 2016 02:37 (eight years ago) link

His next two albums are much better tbh. Most of these tracks are retreads. "Oh Patti" is all time though.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 January 2016 02:38 (eight years ago) link

all of the albums are great for their own reasons. this one is great bc it sounds like waayyy too much cocaine

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 4 January 2016 02:43 (eight years ago) link

the Miles solo in "Oh Patti" is what period Talk Talk strove for.

whole set is a solid piece of interpellated cloth but maybe "Overnite" reifies me most

or it's a pharmacopeia, obv

oh god, this is my favourite scritti album and I've never understood the consensus that this was a huge drop in quality after Cupid & Psyche 85, have to vote for 'All That We Are'

soref, Monday, 4 January 2016 08:30 (eight years ago) link

Love 'Oh Patti' but I think 'Sugar And Spice' just for Roger Troutman's voicebox...can't decide yet though...

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Monday, 4 January 2016 09:58 (eight years ago) link

in my head I always associate this album with Tin Drum by Japan as some kind of pinnacle of 80s inhuman perfection, and the way they both manage to sound strident/rigid and anaemic at the same time

soref, Monday, 4 January 2016 10:57 (eight years ago) link

on most days this might eke out ahead of cupid and psyche for me... think it might be how everything just runs together so well. cupid does this as well in terms of the sound of it and is a bit more varied in terms of songwriting... but there's just something intensely satisfying about how provision is sequenced or something? feels like hook after hook.

it's a bit like picking between something like court and spark and the hissing of summer lawns though. feel like two sides to the same coin.

great b-side too... feels almost a bit by-numbers but then there's that chorus!

one of my favourite albums really

related: how can i get to london cheaply next month

maura, Monday, 4 January 2016 19:18 (eight years ago) link

Voted "Sugar & Spice". I still think "C&P" sounds more glossily inhuman - therefore its the most satisfying album for me - but this is a fine sequel.

four weeks pass...

i'm having one of my regular 'how can these sounds possibly exist' moments with this record

ciderpress, Monday, 8 February 2016 20:40 (eight years ago) link

which sounds in particular?

i always loved Cupid And.. but pretty much slept on everything else except Black Beer.. from a few years back.

piscesx, Monday, 8 February 2016 20:58 (eight years ago) link

also i totally slept on 'philosophy now', that song sounds great today

lolll i've never caught that lyric before

oh green

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 8 February 2016 22:30 (eight years ago) link

eight months pass...

This album is kind of taking over my life at the moment. I can't believe the first time I heard it I thought it was a huge disappointment.

I would have voted for First Boy In This Town. The backing vocals are insanely good.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 3 November 2016 03:13 (eight years ago) link

Overnite, Oh Patti, First Boy and Boom There She Was are all terrific, but I can't be doing with the rest of it to be honest. It sounds almost as if he spent the two years after the huge success of Cupid & Psyche 85 partying his head off and forgot to write more than four songs.
