i really hope that "Bitter Sweet Symphony" gets some love.

Bee OK, Thursday, 14 January 2016 03:24 (nine years ago)

I went with "Everlong." Sentimental favorite.

Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/user/cryptosicko/playlist/1swBGaRpEcCc67iuoiHjS8

Everything is here this time, though I was forced to go with the "early version" of "Miss Misery" and not (what I'm assuming is) the Good Will Hunting version that was being endorsed at the time.

Bitch I'm in the 2112 (cryptosicko), Thursday, 14 January 2016 04:01 (nine years ago)

"Ladies & Gentlemen...."

that's not my post, Thursday, 14 January 2016 06:29 (nine years ago)

worst list of songs i've seen on this site so far

hyponotize, mo money, beetlebum

lute bro (brimstead), Thursday, 14 January 2016 06:39 (nine years ago)

and the private psychedelic real of course

dandys rule too ok

lute bro (brimstead), Thursday, 14 January 2016 06:39 (nine years ago)

this band is just called "the verve" not "the the verve"

i have measured out my life in Goffey, Coombes (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 January 2016 06:54 (nine years ago)

"tubthumping" and "torn" miles ahead of everything else, went w/ the former

most of the rest of the list is absolutely horrid tho, the sort of wanky rockist shit that this website ('acclaimed'[by the specific critics we like and see as generalist despite having very niche taste]music, not ilm) seems to exist to boost, if not in intention then certainly in function. shame because this year had loads of great music in my memory.

"torn" miles ahead of everything else

you're really bad at listening to music.

lute bro (brimstead), Thursday, 14 January 2016 07:23 (nine years ago)

Plent o good ones in here. I went for Karma Police - always loved that song.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 14 January 2016 08:57 (nine years ago)

I really hate Bittersweet Symphony. Absolutely dire.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 14 January 2016 08:58 (nine years ago)

So many UK artists in this list. It would be interesting to see a graphic of the proportion of British artists in these charts over the years.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 14 January 2016 08:59 (nine years ago)

Dry The Rain, obviously

Risingson probably second

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Thursday, 14 January 2016 09:10 (nine years ago)

xxxxp *jerk-off motion*

dyl, Thursday, 14 January 2016 09:35 (nine years ago)

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" does one thing really well, but over and over again for about 5 minutes. And I can't listen to it ever without my mind wandering to thoughts about court cases and royalties disputes. Great song though.

Sam Weller, Thursday, 14 January 2016 11:11 (nine years ago)

I just saw that Dandy Warhols title, went to youtube and now I've been playing that song for about half an hour straight. Totally forgot how great that song was. Voted for Beetlebum though, 2015 marks the year that I fell hard for Blur after knowing them for 20 years but never actually checking them out (besides the big hits), and I've been playing their albums since past summer on repeat.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Thursday, 14 January 2016 11:22 (nine years ago)

Voted for Spiritualized

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Thursday, 14 January 2016 11:24 (nine years ago)

i really hope that "Bitter Sweet Symphony" gets some love.

― Bee OK,

I really hope Bitter Sweet Symphony falls into a wormhole and all traces of its existence are erased from the space-time continuum.

Spiritualized can do one too.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 14 January 2016 12:23 (nine years ago)

That Spiritualized album was overrated, but I really like the opening track and 'Broken Heart'.

Anyone voting for Aphex?

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 14 January 2016 12:28 (nine years ago)

It's on my shortlist, but I probably won't. He has better songs from 97.

I find all Spiritualized really overrated TBH.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 14 January 2016 12:40 (nine years ago)

Not a single nod for 'Joga' yet? Guess I'll be that guy.

Professor Bworlph (Old Lunch), Thursday, 14 January 2016 13:27 (nine years ago)

It's certainly in consideration for me!

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 14 January 2016 13:35 (nine years ago)

Though I prefer Bachelorette.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 14 January 2016 13:35 (nine years ago)

Biggie, SK, B&S, Hanson.

campreverb, Thursday, 14 January 2016 13:49 (nine years ago)

Jóga, Between the Bars, or Come to Daddy. All three are great and there's a bunch of other really good stuff, I totally thought 1997 was a drop off year.

Tom Violence, Thursday, 14 January 2016 21:02 (nine years ago)

"No Surprises."

the future is now, Friday, 15 January 2016 15:04 (nine years ago)

what a massive year!

some years are better for critical consensus tracks than others (if yr into "critically acclaimed" stuff, maybe)

niels, Friday, 15 January 2016 16:40 (nine years ago)

I remember this as being a great year, but at the same time I've heard a lot of these songs so much that looking through the list nothing really strikes me as being anything that I should listen to immediately.

Turrican, Friday, 15 January 2016 16:59 (nine years ago)

Autumn Sweater.

1997 was such a great year for music.

Very selfish, and very ironic (DJP), Friday, 15 January 2016 17:37 (nine years ago)

i love 1997. lots of great things to chose from.

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 January 2016 03:20 (nine years ago)

Brimful of Asha vs. Everlong vs. Hypnotize. Probably going with Your Woman, but there's lots and lots to love here

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 16 January 2016 07:43 (nine years ago)

Can someone explain the appeal of Brimful of Asha? Sounds boringly repetitive and tossed-off to me.

Lee626, Saturday, 16 January 2016 09:46 (nine years ago)

Idk I think it can be massively catchy when the mood takes me. Feel free to mentally replace it with Mmmbop, which is prob the better song

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 16 January 2016 09:53 (nine years ago)

Is The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) invisible here? Not even in DJP's long list..

ewar woowar (or something), Saturday, 16 January 2016 10:30 (nine years ago)

Not a single nod for 'Joga' yet? Guess I'll be that guy.

It gets a vote from me, it's one of my dozen or so favourite songs of all time.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 16 January 2016 12:08 (nine years ago)

Let Down

billstevejim, Saturday, 16 January 2016 12:40 (nine years ago)

maura, Saturday, 16 January 2016 15:24 (nine years ago)

is the enthusiasm for "brimful of asha" mostly for the original or the norman cook remix?

dyl, Saturday, 16 January 2016 18:02 (nine years ago)

This is when I started to drift away from the radio... Autumn Sweater by a mile.

skip, Saturday, 16 January 2016 20:39 (nine years ago)

Private Psychedelic Reel is just over the top awesome and if I had to pick a song from this list right now that I would like to listen to at this moment, that would be the one.

octobeard, Sunday, 17 January 2016 07:14 (nine years ago)

Some absolute garbage in this list

96 and 97 have been the weakest years of the decade by some distance

paolo, Sunday, 17 January 2016 11:03 (nine years ago)

1. "Brimful of Asha", 2. "Your Woman." Haven't heard "Tubthumping" or "Mmmbop" in a while, but I'd probably still like them. Never much cared for "Autumn Sweater."
