i've only heard this one 2-3 times and i've always wanted to get more into it.

napoleon solo

This is so hard!

Probably either Chanbara, Napoleon Solo, or Lopsided. This record is so good.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 06:19 (nine years ago)

Hulahoop Wounds has finally grown on me, those chords under "yes this i know, comes back ten fold"

voted for Transatlantic Foe. there's a morning after sort of quality to this song, reflecting at the end of something long and tiring, despite the gonzo lyrics. brilliant song

flappy bird, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 18:26 (nine years ago)

this really is a perfect record. i've even warmed to "hourglass." Relationship of Command has great songs but the production wears me down. "Pattern Against User" is probably the best song they ever wrote, and one of the best songs about drug addiction and drug addicts I've ever heard. Cedric gets so much shit for his lyrics but the imagery in that song is breathtaking.

Napoleon Solo for me. Fantastic song.

Best interview with Cedric I've ever heard. Really, really interesting conversation. Can't remember if someone on ILM posted this in another thread but here it is (nearly two hours!!): https://soundcloud.com/deandelray/let-there-be-talk-ep36-cedric

one month passes...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I couldn't possibly vote in this poll without re-listening -- even of the tracks I have a good idea of from title alone, I'm probably forgetting an average of two weird bridges, cool instrumental passages, or surprising breakdowns per song

guess I know what I'm playing while I do laundry this morning!* (* note that the onset of daylight savings time has render today's "morning" postcedent to noon)

bernard snowy, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:19 (nine years ago)

hey i listened to this on saturday. put it on again today and i'd say i'm eligible!

denies the existence of dark matter (difficult listening hour), Monday, 14 March 2016 16:23 (nine years ago)

tracks I can definitely rule out at this stage: "A Devil Among the Tailors" (all sound & fury, with stupid lyrics), "Chanbara" (disposable, fist-pumping anthem of the sort they would only improve at on subsequent releases), "Pickpocket" (not as good as "Chanbara"), "Hourglass" (I see what they were going for but it didn't quite work, & I'm glad this doesn't actually close the album)

bernard snowy, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:24 (nine years ago)

"Shaking Hand Incision" is the one I can never remember the first thing about. 'Stiff lips starched in a giggle' might be the rare ATDI lyric that reads better than it plays

bernard snowy, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:25 (nine years ago)

... yeah, "Lopsided" just came on & if I'm voting based on immediate visceral gut reaction, this or "Alpha Centauri" are the only correct answers

bernard snowy, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:27 (nine years ago)

maybe worth noting: "Hourglass" sounds better the louder I turn it up (but usually I turn it down, because I'm embarrassed by the clean emo vox)

bernard snowy, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:33 (nine years ago)

This is still one of the most exciting records I've ever heard. Voted for Transatlantic Foe because it would probably get shut out otherwise, I don't think there are many ATDI fans on ILM, and yeah Lopsided will probably win, but I've been walking home to this record for the past couple months after not listening to it for years, and man it's great walking music. Makes me want to bounce off the walls. WIDOWS

flappy bird, Monday, 14 March 2016 17:36 (nine years ago)

lol i heard "hulahoop wounds" at a venue the other night and kinda wish i had voted for that

where the poltergeists play their video games!

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 14 March 2016 18:15 (nine years ago)

"A Devil Among the Tailors" is probably my least favorite song after "Hourglass," but I've got to stand up for its lyrics, especially this line: "A cavity of candy in Havana captivity."

flappy bird, Monday, 14 March 2016 21:15 (nine years ago)

wait people dislike "hourglass"? that song is emo as hell

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 14 March 2016 21:16 (nine years ago)

exactly

flappy bird, Monday, 14 March 2016 21:20 (nine years ago)

after becoming obsessed with ATDI, i searched out all their contemporaries and came away with nothing. Can't stand Sunny Day Real Estate. ATDI is in a league of their own for better or worse...

Will there ever be another band like At the Drive-In? Cautiously optimistic about their reunion this year... I'm seeing them in Columbus, OH in May, my girlfriend's mom got free tickets to the festival they're playing there...

Meanwhile, they're playing two shows at the 9:30 Club in June... $45 per ticket. Nope
