Well this could work.

huh that's intriguing

Amira, Queen of Creativity (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:08 (nine years ago)

would swear i saw a ref to this project on ilx, which i thought was just inspired fiction, in the past week?

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)

After a while the only thing I noticed in that article anymore was all the "Mr."s - no idea what the content was, only that it said Mr. Pop and Mr. Homme a lot :(

StanM, Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

And yet another roadblock is thrown in the path of the second Them Crooked Vultures album.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:37 (nine years ago)

i wonder if it will be better than the last 10 iggy albums i ignored.

scott seward, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:01 (nine years ago)

having said that, was listening to zombie birdhouse the other day and man oh man that sounded great. i love that album. the last one i love. or want to hear. (just a smidge off my own bowie love timeline...)

scott seward, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:02 (nine years ago)

I don't like that album at all. But I like Blah-Blah-Blah, so...

i mean i wish him well and everything and hope he's happy. he seems like a groovy guy. and i really can't thank him enough for everything i do love. i'm not sneering or anything. but every time i hear a latter-day thing...yeah, just not my kinda thing.

scott seward, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:23 (nine years ago)

maybe this will be different though! who knows? maybe it will sound EXACTLY like zombie birdhouse.

scott seward, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:23 (nine years ago)

In some ways, “Post Pop Depression” also picks up where “Lust for Life” left off. “Where those records pointed, it stopped,” Mr. Homme said. “But without copying it,” he continued, “that direction actually goes for miles. And when you keep going for miles you can’t see these two records any more.”

Let's do this.

Lame.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 January 2016 11:10 (nine years ago)

But not entirely unexpected.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 January 2016 11:10 (nine years ago)

It sounds like something he's had laying around since the mid '80s. With properly '80s production it could have been an outtake from Blah-Blah-Blah.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 22 January 2016 11:15 (nine years ago)

Buncha fickle fucks. I listened to the studio version first and liked it: https://youtu.be/1m8TmlS20ZA

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 22 January 2016 14:06 (nine years ago)

There was a Kyuss song called Gardenia, seems an odd choice for a song title

Buncha fickle fucks

My expectations were always extremely low; the only positive thought I had about this, when reading about it in the New York Times, was that at least Dave Grohl wasn't involved.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 22 January 2016 15:09 (nine years ago)

i think the studio version is pretty fun! (didn't listen to the live)

Amira, Queen of Creativity (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 January 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

It's great. People get very specific ideas in their heads of what something should sound like.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 22 January 2016 15:22 (nine years ago)

idk in terms of instrumentation and groove this reminded me of berlin bowie kinda, but that could just be me overdosing on that for the past week

i like it

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 22 January 2016 15:30 (nine years ago)

But it's so slow and boring!

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 22 January 2016 15:33 (nine years ago)

it might be his homage to 90's bowie. #restinpeace

scott seward, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:09 (nine years ago)

Studio version is totally ok. Hints of Shades, and I actually like all that space/pauses in the verse.

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:15 (nine years ago)

i like this a lot. homme's harmonies >>

maura, Friday, 22 January 2016 19:25 (nine years ago)

Xpost Depending on your perspective, "slow and boring" could potentially apply to the majority of the tracks on The Idiot and Lust For Life as well, which is where this is meant to pick up from. I think they achieve a similar vibe here and it makes me look forward to the rest of the record.

vmajestic, Friday, 22 January 2016 21:35 (nine years ago)

No, I disagree. "Lust for Life," "Some Weird Sin," "The Passenger," "Sixteen" - all uptempo, rockin' songs. The Idiot is a slow, creepy-crawling album, but it's also much more electronic - it's going for a particular vibe. This song is slow in a rhythmically lazy way that's very common in post-grunge "alt" rock. When compared with Iggy albums of the past, particularly New Values, Soldier, and Party, it feels very slack.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 22 January 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

Quite simply, it's too early to pass final judgement. Even if you take The Idiot off the table, the new track has more of a spiritual kinship with Lust For Life than most things he's done since that period. This one grooves more, has the high harmonies and hooky guitar figures punctuating the verses that are common to a lot of the tracks from that era. A slower tempo track as first choice of single may be all there is to it at this point. Either way, I think it points in a more intriguing direction than, say, any of the recent solo or Stooges records. Lots of uptempo rockers on those records heading absolutely nowhere.

vmajestic, Friday, 22 January 2016 22:13 (nine years ago)

that's great! doesn't remind me much of LfL or Idiot, but it does remind me that I.P. very seldom relies on shopworn lyrical tropes… and for that matter, neither does J.H.

when Grohl shuts his mouth and isn't making mini series about how terrible it is that the kids today don't do exactly what he did at that time of life, and instead puts stick to snare and pedal to kick, he's just fine.

I have word from a reputable source that this band will be doing "Sixteen" and "Some weird sin" live.

veronica moser, Saturday, 23 January 2016 18:22 (nine years ago)

I know it's easy to be disappointed after Lust For Life. From New Values on, every Iggy and Stooges album has been disappointing to me. I'm appreciating this rare moment when "Gardenia" has pleasantly surprised me. It's not his best but I'm optimistic that the album will not suck.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 24 January 2016 14:35 (nine years ago)

Iggy posed nude for a life drawing class; the results will be exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum.

“The life class is a special place in which to scrutinize the human form,” [London-based conceptual artist Jeremy] Deller explained in a press release. “As the bedrock of art education and art history, it is still the best way to understand the body. For me it makes perfect sense for Iggy Pop to be the subject of a life class; his body is central to an understanding of rock music and its place within American culture. His body has witnessed much and should be documented.”

i really like this so far!

in fairness there's also a bit of this where, because i have tickets to the show coming up in minneapolis, i'm also kinda judging this in terms of how awesome i think this band is gonna be at playing the idiot/lust for life stuff they are doing live

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 March 2016 16:50 (nine years ago)

I saw the setlist - I'm most amazed they're doing the Repo Man theme song.

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 13:10 (nine years ago)

This is good to hear, as the complete album does seem a bit underwhelming to me. So what's the ratio regarding older songs they play in the set?

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:15 (nine years ago)

I totally love "Sunday" and "Paraguay."

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:30 (nine years ago)

it's about 1/3 new album, 1/3 Lust for Life, 1/3 The Idiot, with some variations (you can check out setlist.fm there are some little changes but they are doing pretty much similar sets it looks like)...also they do "Repo Man" from the movie soundtrack but in a version that totally smokes and sounded based on this 83 demo version you can find on a dodgy comp on spotify

but man...the band and arrangements are so good...here's what they played in mpls last night

Lust for Life

Sister Midnight

American Valhalla

Sixteen

In the Lobby

Some Weird Sin

Funtime

Tonight

Sunday

German Days

Mass Production

Nightclubbing

The Passenger

China Girl

Encore:

This looks indeed really promising, thanks!

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:43 (nine years ago)

I'd love "I'm Bored," "Run Like a Villain," "Five Foot One," and "Wild America," but I guess I shouldn't hold my breath. Psyched that "Repo Man" has been dusted off.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:46 (nine years ago)

i looked at other nights, and it's pretty consistent setlists

the band was so great, Homme & the Arctic Monkeys drummer were great and man-about-town Matt Sweeney was awesome on bass...other guy I didn't know, I think he's from a newer lineup of Queens of the Stone Age? he was kind of the ultility guy, playing guitar and keyboards depending on the songs

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:49 (nine years ago)

I'm warming to "Gardenia." Beyond the oddball title and some signature oblique Iggy lyrics, I'm starting to enjoy it way more than I initially did. The chorus still feels odd (especially the "'what-to-do-tonight," bit), but I'm digging it. I'm no botanist, but gardenia's aren't that lovely a flower, are they? I keep thinking of Marlon Brando's schizo monologue at the end of "Apocalypse Now" when he mentions seeing an overgrown gardenia plantation in Ohio as a boy.

Concert in Berlin surprisingly awesome, currently checking out how to make it to Paris for the last tour gig on Sunday. The atmosphere during The Passenger and China Girl back to back at the end of the regular gig was insane.
Also experiencing a live version of Mass Production, completely surreal but pulled off quite well.

Homme seemed to be really invested in playing the older songs, I wonder how big his part was in coming up with the concept of giving LFL/TI so much space.

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 10:41 (nine years ago)

after losing Bowie the way we did, the title "Post Pop Depression" has me worried -- should I be doing everything in my power to see Iggy this go-'round?

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 15:26 (nine years ago)

It certainly won't get any better. He seemed fit but really hindered by his leg/hip condition. On the other hand during an extended version of 'Fall In Love With Me' he somehow managed to completely cross the venue in the audience from left to right while singing.

Plus he's not hard to catch atm. He seems to be doing some festival gigs during summer, labelled as 'Iggy Solo', though I suppose these being a more standard affair song-selection wise and of course without Homme, Helders etc.
