Burn, please.

bored at work (snoball), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 18:32 (nine years ago)

I've never done this before but I'll give it a shot: Pazzo!

daavid, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

Are there any rules? (besides the deadline?)

daavid, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 23:43 (nine years ago)

No rules, just go nuts.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 00:32 (nine years ago)

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:53 (nine years ago)

dictator decides!

sarahell, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:54 (nine years ago)

Would love to be in this again but suspect I don't have time. If nobody picks Sad Robot World or The Pop Kids and you're stuck then I'll have a bash.

suffeeciant attreebution (aldo), Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:02 (nine years ago)

I guess we'll have a crack at Twenty-something

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:06 (nine years ago)

"Say It To Me" is back up for grabs

its subtle brume (DJP), Thursday, 28 January 2016 19:09 (nine years ago)

I only discovered Garage Band on my Mac (well, opened it for the first time last week) and I have no musical ability or else I would have a go at this.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 28 January 2016 21:30 (nine years ago)

This is precisely why you SHOULD have a go.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 January 2016 21:54 (nine years ago)

I'll take Undertow then.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 29 January 2016 01:26 (nine years ago)

I was going to skip this one, but I think I have something suitable for "Inner Sanctum", so hey.

Mark G, Friday, 29 January 2016 11:10 (nine years ago)

I would like to have a go, but being a lurker I don't want to stake a claim over regulars. If something's left I'll do it.

bert newtown, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:23 (nine years ago)

Hey we still have plenty left, claim away.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)

Current status, five left to claim:

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 January 2016 21:01 (nine years ago)

i've never done this i don't know exactly how it works but it sounds fun and i love the title "into thin air" so i want to claim that one!

fact checking cuz, Friday, 29 January 2016 21:07 (nine years ago)

which is to say, i AM claiming that one. if that's how it works.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 29 January 2016 21:08 (nine years ago)

here's how it works:

1. write and record a piece of music (song or instrumental)
2. title it with the song title you've claimed
3. send an audio file of the recording to Ned
4. PROFIT
4a. sadly there is no actual profit

its subtle brume (DJP), Friday, 29 January 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)

can i stand behind every performance in Issey Miyake shades while stonily poking a keyboard

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 January 2016 21:30 (nine years ago)

thanks djp. i'm in. (but i'm going to stop at step 4 and totally skip step 4a.)

fact checking cuz, Friday, 29 January 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

Sounds good. WHO DARES DO THE FIRST TWO.

01 Happiness
02 The Pop Kids
03 Twenty-something -- imago
04 Groovy -- Tomboto
05 The dictator decides --sarahell
06 Pazzo! -- daavid
07 Inner sanctum -- Mark G
08 Undertow -- Gubke
09 Sad robot world -- MaresNest
10 Say it to me -- bert newtown
11 Burn -- snoball
12 Into thin air -- fact checking cuz

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 January 2016 22:26 (nine years ago)

As previously stated, if nobody takes The Pop Kids over the weekend I'll take it (but tbh I hope someone does).

suffeeciant attreebution (aldo), Saturday, 30 January 2016 00:25 (nine years ago)

Okay, tentatively yours unless someone speaks up. That just leaves..."Happiness." And who among us is happy?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 January 2016 15:42 (nine years ago)

needs Bernard Snowy and emil.y

MaresNest, Saturday, 30 January 2016 16:53 (nine years ago)

OK, I'll have a crack at Happiness.

The Return of the Thin White Pope (Tom D.), Sunday, 31 January 2016 14:17 (nine years ago)

is there a place to go dl all the previous pre-covers that I missed in my self imposed exile

Sith Dog (El Tomboto), Friday, 12 February 2016 01:20 (nine years ago)

Missed Tom D.'s post there -- it's yours of course! And per Tomboto I've got them all around but I don't think many are hosted at this point...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2016 04:40 (nine years ago)

dumb (perhaps) question: do people generally try to make these things sound kinda sorta like the artist we are pre-honoring, or is that beside the point?

fact checking cuz, Friday, 12 February 2016 04:48 (nine years ago)

Sometimes they do..

There was a whole bunch of apex on the Syro one, not so much on the Morrissey one..

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2016 08:09 (nine years ago)

.. And the Lulu one was made to confuse.

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2016 08:10 (nine years ago)

The lovely ILX COMPILATIONS and what they all are..

.. If you need to catch up.

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2016 08:12 (nine years ago)

dumb (perhaps) question: do people generally try to make these things sound kinda sorta like the artist we are pre-honoring, or is that beside the point?

Not unless the Pet Shop Boys are planning a pretty radical change of direction on this album. Speaking only of my track. Which I've finished. And will send when I get round to it.

Demeraray & Essequebo (Tom D.), Friday, 12 February 2016 10:14 (nine years ago)

I've more or less done my own thing, but have tried to throw in a couple of PSB-like touches.

bored at work (snoball), Friday, 12 February 2016 16:10 (nine years ago)

i think i just came up with the lyrics for the chorus and an overall concept

sarahell, Friday, 12 February 2016 16:29 (nine years ago)

Okay so anyway:

01 Happiness -- Tom D.
02 The Pop Kids -- aldo
03 Twenty-something -- imago
04 Groovy -- Tomboto
05 The dictator decides --sarahell
06 Pazzo! -- daavid
07 Inner sanctum -- Mark G
08 Undertow -- Gubke
09 Sad robot world -- MaresNest
10 Say it to me -- bert newtown
11 Burn -- snoball
12 Into thin air -- fact checking cuz

And beyond that, cover art from someone, please...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 February 2016 16:54 (nine years ago)

How are Darwin's Kids fixed?

Mark G, Friday, 12 February 2016 17:13 (nine years ago)

Ooh, I'm a bit late but here goes...

Mark G, Monday, 22 February 2016 15:48 (nine years ago)

Right, that's my track sent.

Thomas of Britain (Tom D.), Monday, 22 February 2016 16:00 (nine years ago)

Not late at all! Thanks folks -- I have four tracks so far.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 February 2016 16:34 (nine years ago)

I keep getting lost in Garage Band. I haven't recorded anything yet. This might have been a silly idea.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 22 February 2016 23:11 (nine years ago)

Not as silly as me thinking I would have time. I'm not very proud of my effort at all. :-(

suffeeciant attreebution (aldo), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 13:58 (nine years ago)

Mine's is no masterpiece, if that's any consolation. Not exactly selling this, are we?

Thomas of Britain (Tom D.), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 15:44 (nine years ago)

After 2 attempts to make something PSBesque I'm just making something else. Given I don't have much time it sadly also may not be a masterpiece. Still...friday evening to polish it up.

bert newtown, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 19:13 (nine years ago)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah - sent.

bert newtown, Friday, 26 February 2016 12:15 (nine years ago)

v nearly finished

odysseus (imago), Friday, 26 February 2016 12:44 (nine years ago)

I am weirdly looking forward to this if only so I can measure them up against my own amateurish Garage Band attempts. And also, I'm sure it'll be good.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 26 February 2016 12:53 (nine years ago)

Ned, any chance for a deadline extension? I really, really want to do this but I'm completely buried with work and don't think I'll have time to finish by Saturday :/

daavid, Friday, 26 February 2016 14:45 (nine years ago)

If you can get it to me by Sunday?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 February 2016 16:58 (nine years ago)

I knew there was something I'd said I'd have done this weekend ...

sarahell, Friday, 26 February 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)

Thanks Ned!

daavid, Friday, 26 February 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)

Getting promoted + attendant work insanity + not knowing anything about Garage Band before I agreed to this + not having any musical ability or understanding beyond a listener = this was a very bad idea. Maybe this album really needs to broken up by a brief interlude track.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 26 February 2016 23:33 (nine years ago)

it'll be mostly interludes at this rate

submitted, btw (not an interlude)

odysseus (imago), Saturday, 27 February 2016 23:19 (nine years ago)

Got the backing track ready ('ready'). Now all I gotta do is the vox! I'm kind of pissed at myself for not spending more time on this. I wanted to do an epic sounding track and ended up doing something very minimal. Also, I'm pretty sure I stole the chorus from somewhere, I always do that. The verses too, probably.

daavid, Sunday, 28 February 2016 06:26 (nine years ago)

Just about to send.

I wanted my friend to sing on it but we couldn't manage it, which is a shame.

I tried to make it sad, which it is (kinda) but it's nothing like PSB, perhaps if they were on ECM.

MaresNest, Sunday, 28 February 2016 12:06 (nine years ago)

My "Happiness" turned out more sinister than happy tbh.

Thomas of Britain (Tom D.), Sunday, 28 February 2016 12:14 (nine years ago)

I woke up with the awful thought i'd forgotten to have a bassline. There is a weird bassy phrase but ... is it still sunday, should I fix it?

bert newtown, Sunday, 28 February 2016 20:36 (nine years ago)

Totally fine for a last minute fix! I'm pretty tired today -- yesterday was busy with a lot of things, including two shows -- so I might not get around to actually putting everything together until tomorrow.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 February 2016 22:59 (nine years ago)

Submitted!

daavid, Monday, 29 February 2016 07:44 (nine years ago)

just got to do a final edit ... they should rename ableton live, ableton lol

sarahell, Monday, 29 February 2016 08:00 (nine years ago)

What I originally planned as a sequel to "Paninaro" ended up being a google-translate italian spoken word melodrama. Oh well

daavid, Monday, 29 February 2016 08:03 (nine years ago)

Okay at this point I have nine out of twelve -- sorry to not be more up on this, completely exhausted yesterday. If you're still running late, get them in to me by tonight if you could!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 February 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

sent in all its obvious-mistakes-in-ableton.html glory

sarahell, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 06:13 (nine years ago)

Okay a quick update -- I'm missing Tomboto's song (but he's here in SF for the week so I'll check with him) and Gubke's.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 04:10 (nine years ago)

I haven't been able to pull it together!

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 04:27 (nine years ago)

Something will happen!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 March 2016 05:36 (nine years ago)

MaresNest, Sunday, 6 March 2016 09:40 (nine years ago)

Still waiting on Gukbe and Tombot here...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 March 2016 03:52 (nine years ago)

at this point the thing to do is two spoken-word interludes and done tbh

Laertiades (imago), Monday, 7 March 2016 08:00 (nine years ago)

and by that i mean 'take your time, it's fine, don't replace my own track with a spoken-word interlude, sorry'

Laertiades (imago), Monday, 7 March 2016 22:02 (nine years ago)

i will do a track with a computer voice reading imago's greatest ilx posts

sarahell, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 01:57 (nine years ago)

At least it'll be short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 15:15 (nine years ago)

Resisted the temptation earlier. Just too easy.

Thomas of Britain (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 15:28 (nine years ago)

;_;

Laertiades (imago), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 15:29 (nine years ago)

;____;

Laertiades (imago), Thursday, 10 March 2016 18:50 (nine years ago)

can i make changes to mine?

sarahell, Thursday, 10 March 2016 21:22 (nine years ago)

If you like. At this point if I don't get anything by Saturday I will release it over the weekend. (Sorry Gubke and Tombot but the time is nigh.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:48 (nine years ago)

I have a zombie bikers ride thru town sounscape itching for a voice over if gubke or ned would...or anyone really. It'll work along the lines of able ton.fuckno as earlier described.

bert newtown, Friday, 11 March 2016 13:27 (nine years ago)

No last-minute drama?

Laertiades (imago), Sunday, 13 March 2016 19:18 (nine years ago)

Nope, so I'm going to give what I have a last listen through then upload later this afternoon or tonight.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 March 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

please do spoken-word interludes for 'groovy' and 'undertow'* if you can :)

*the liner-notes to the tool album maybe?

Laertiades (imago), Sunday, 13 March 2016 21:32 (nine years ago)

My apologies for not being able to help with Bert's request -- fuller last few days than expected.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 March 2016 21:34 (nine years ago)

And we are live

“It Was Fantastic To Be Back" -- ILX Precovers the Pet Shop Boys' _Super_

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 March 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

whump, there it is..

Mark G, Monday, 14 March 2016 09:35 (nine years ago)

two weeks pass...

Well, I didn't get around to this in a timely fashion, but I did end up with lyrics. Maybe this will end up as a series of audible waves one day.

"Groovy" by the Pet Shop Boys

What is the definition of a beat?

a beat is something
a beat is something
that goes on in your mind
goes on in your mind
that happens all the time
happens all the time
that can't be stopped
can't be stopped
but most importantly

(chorus A)
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all the ladies out at sea
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all the men trapped in zero-G
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all the mouths full of the D
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all the fingers inside a V

a beat is something
a beat is something
that breaks up time
breaks up time
that repeats itself
wait it does what now
but most importantly

(chorus B)
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all the MC squares that equal C
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for everyone on the road holding the P
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for all of us and you and me
It's GRROOOOOOVY
for the glory of god and country

repeat chorus A+B, fade out

other people systems as applicable (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 03:21 (nine years ago)

it's got some syncopation going on, in my head. french horn solo bridge, obviously.
