Sweet Child for shear length.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:52 (nine years ago)

Think i'm going to be boring and go for Basket Of Light. Hunting Song is flawless.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 1 February 2016 20:23 (nine years ago)

s/t vs Basket for me. Hmmm....s/t for "Pentangling" alone

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 1 February 2016 20:30 (nine years ago)

i might've gone for one of the first two, but have been really digging Reflections lately -- maybe more of a "rock" album in some parts, but I just love the overall vibe. that version of "will the circle be unbroken" is just so nice and groovy.

such a great band. i don't really know, it's a tough pick between basket of light and sweet child for me.

nomar, Monday, 1 February 2016 20:45 (nine years ago)

the thompson/cox rhythm section is just so nice to listen to ...
listened to a bunch of these over the weekend, they really are superbly recorded albums.

^^such a perfect blend of UK folk and spacey jazz

nomar, Monday, 1 February 2016 20:52 (nine years ago)

i absolutely love them all. will maybe do a heavy listening sesh during house cleaning tomorrow and will report back. i think i have definitely listened to s/t the most, but lately solomon's seal has had my enthusiasm.

ian, Monday, 1 February 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)

how's that mid eighties comeback album? allmusic has nice things to say about it but then again they also have middling things to say about solomon's seal...

nomar, Monday, 1 February 2016 21:46 (nine years ago)

i haven't heard any of the "reunion" things ... do any of them have the whole original band on 'em?

bit off topic, but i've been enjoying the Dust on the Nettles comp of brit-folk-psych-rock that came out last year (pentangle appear along with the other usual suspects and some choice things i've never heard). nice selection! though it confirms my unpopular opinion: i'm not crazy about comus!

tylerw, Monday, 1 February 2016 21:48 (nine years ago)

Try the second album! The first one gets all the ink but the second one is vastly underrated (and totally different). Not as conspicuously "witchy" and difficult, still plenty weird.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 1 February 2016 22:03 (nine years ago)

yeah i haven't heard that (or at least all of it, I can't remember). just when i hear the first one i always feel like they're trying a little too hard.

tylerw, Monday, 1 February 2016 22:05 (nine years ago)

love them all, but s/t is just such a joyous listening experience. basket of light a close second, though.

I only have Cruel Sister and Basket of Light but I often think of CS as a desert island album. Interesting that no one picks that one. Clearly, I need to listen to more.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 02:47 (nine years ago)

I think all the albums are really good.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 02:57 (nine years ago)

I love Reflection; apparently they were falling apart through too much drink at the time, but they sound really tight and together. it's almost funky.

mahb, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 13:53 (nine years ago)

good excuse for some re-listening right here

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 16:38 (nine years ago)

yeahhh, i'm snowed in from work today so i'm just going to listen to Pentangle today.
kind of love Renbourn's electric playing on Reflections, totally groovy.

tylerw, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 16:50 (nine years ago)

I'd pick Cruel Sister, but it's also the only one that I'm really familiar with. I too need to listen to more.

La Lechazunga (Leee), Friday, 19 February 2016 00:15 (nine years ago)

Picked up Cruel Sister in the bargain bin last week & was blown away. Will wait on poll results to find out what my next purchase should be.

hardcore dilettante, Friday, 19 February 2016 01:34 (nine years ago)

Cruel Sister is fantastic -- was reading on wiki that it was thought of as "a commercial disaster" at the time, which is interesting ... "Jack Orion" is so great -- has to be up there as one of the most classic takes-up-a-whole-side epics.

tylerw, Friday, 19 February 2016 15:05 (nine years ago)

having listened to all of these albums in the past couple weeks, i feel safe in saying that Pentangle RULES.

tylerw, Friday, 19 February 2016 15:06 (nine years ago)

when the bass comes in on "jack orion" is as deep a headbanging moment for me as any carcass song

Weird

Wimmels, Saturday, 20 February 2016 00:58 (nine years ago)

seems about right to me?

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Saturday, 20 February 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

Nah, man. I could tell by the momentum of this thread that Cruel Sister was gonna inexplicably eke out a win it doesn't deserve. It's the Autobahn of psych folk: one killer long jam surrounded by forgettable material.

I think I forgot to vote but there is only one right answer and that's s/t

There are a lot of badass songs on s/t, I couldn't vote for anything else.

calzino, Saturday, 20 February 2016 02:07 (nine years ago)

seven years pass...

I have listened to this band regularly for the last 5 years (and fairly often for at least 5-10 years before that) and have yet to tire of them even a little bit.

I bought the debut on vinyl in December - the only one of the original run I didn't have. I knew a lot of or all the songs via various comp and live albums, but hadn't listened to the album all that much. It is incredible - Pentangling just kills me. Album sounds amazing and the playing is as extreme in its way as any metal album.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 2 February 2024 23:02 (one year ago)

Cruel Sister was my intro to them and still probably my fav, but debut is right there.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 2 February 2024 23:13 (one year ago)

I really hesitated before buying the CD boxset about 7-8 years ago. I'm so glad I did.

Duke, Saturday, 3 February 2024 00:57 (one year ago)

That was my entry point as well, but when it came out in the 2007. I think I d/l that and Cruel Sister right around the same time.
