see the new Moby video for 'In This World' (tiny aliens try and attract Moby's attention and look all sad when he doesnt respond accordingly) and also Weezer's Muppet-fest 'KeepFishin' and 'Island In The Sun' videos

they're only doing it to so the college girls go 'awwwww so sweeeet' right?

Phil Collins Something Happened On The Way To Heaven must be the absolute low point in the history of this tactic.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god no, that Spice Girls video with the children and the animated spice fairy bumblebees. Which was filmed when they were in the process of breaking up, and clearly none of them were speaking to each other/available for filming, so they had those two children, one of which DIED or something awful. What was it called? Viva Forever, or Goodbye or something creepy and scary like that. It was trying to be cutesy, but it was just terrifying.

My worst is laboured jokeyness - arrrghh! The typical example is some Dire Straits thing with - I can hardly type this, it's so cringeworthy - one of their roadies/soundmen duckwalking, & the bass player winking at the camera...on the subject of which, I can't believe the audacity of that replacement bass player in Status Quo, who started behaving like this in his first vid...I mean, no one even new who the bugger was & he was there, grinning like an old-timer!

CUTE VIDEOS ARE GREAT YOU HORRIBLE PEOPLE!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

In the Viva Forever video one of them climbs inside a giant Rubik's cube or gets kidnapped by a bubble or something? Terrifying, yes.

"Why does my heart feel so bad" has a cool video.

Graham (graham), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the videos are actually nice enough but it just makes me laugh that Moby and Weezer seem so desperate to let us know how sweet and sensitive they are...and there's me thinkin they were so macho

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't mind tlc meditating on giant mushrooms or spice girl tinkerbells 1/2 as much as that coldplay singer doing his 'look at me, i'm your doe-eyed rainflecked sweet boyfriend' thing in 'yellow' (predictable ilm answer or what? but true)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

laboured sincerity = bring back the birch!

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I would rather spend the rest of my life in lesbocelibacy as enforced by screaming harpies of tweevil with radical feminist birchrods than even CONSIDER for a fraction of a section the merest thought of that twat out of Coldplay even harbouring an idea about being ANYONE's "doe-eyed rainflecked sweet boyfriend".

Yeeuurrsssggggghhhh!!!

I feel like I need a shower now.

That Blur video with the animated milk cartons was definitely guilty.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

weezer's going for the kawaaaaai aspect. (japanese for cute)

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the Blur milk carton (Coffee & TV) *WAS* actually cute. Cause it had the scary, slightly frightening "Brave Little Toaster" moments in the alley with the wino cartons that rescued it from sheer kawaii sickly sweetness!

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing's more laboured than that cute liddle mobile phone in the Carphone Warehouse tv ads, but i quite like that an all

also, Andrex puppy = gross over-use

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The tweevilness of the andrex puppies is mitigated by the Hull-accented voice that used to shout "Rite, puuppeeee patt-rohl!"

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The weezer video with the muppets isn't really cute though is it? It's just a weezer video with the muppets.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 November 2002 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why, but...

Weezer + Muppets = CUTE!

while

Belle & Sebastian + Muppets = TERRIFYING.

Could be with the fact that I fancy that cute guitarist out of Weezer a bit, while I fancy, well, NO ONE in B&S. And I'm not even a college girl...

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the muppets are cute, Weezer are not

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You are wrong. The dark-haired broody guitarist who looks a bit like Alex from Blur is dead cute. (And no, I do not mean the bespectacled one who left because he looked too much like Graham from Blur...)

kate, Friday, 1 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, is that the official reason he left? i hope so

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I mean even The Aphex Twin got on the bandwagen by putting kids into Come To Daddy. ;-)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 1 November 2002 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

CUTE VIDEOS ARE GREAT YOU HORRIBLE PEOPLE!

Is that one shit video (of the many) from Genesis with Benny Hill as Fred Scuttle cute or just something that makes you kick in your TV screen?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Gack, this is possibly the most embarrassing thing I've ever confessed here but the "Viva Forever" video actually made me cry, mostly because it came out when the only person I considered a real friend at that point who was also the most pathetic infatuation I'll ever have was about to move away.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it was all about losing your friend forever and all that.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Weezer video would've been better if they removed Weezer and left in the muppets. And the music shouldve been replaced with "Rainbow Connection". Aw shit, it should've just been The Muppet Movie.

Also, the Blur video, cute or not, rocked.
