The uncoolest music on Earth.

so what are the hard rock/radio rock "hits" these days?

nomar, Monday, 22 February 2016 18:18 (nine years ago)

I don't actually know. I never listen to the radio myself, but I decided to start this thread because this stuff never gets discussed in the Rolling Metal thread, but it's really popular. Example: Disturbed are touring arenas this summer, with Breaking Benjamin as co-headliners. Now, I knew Disturbed were popular - each of their last five albums has entered the Billboard 200 at #1. But I had no idea Breaking Benjamin were as big as they apparently are. I couldn't ID one of their songs with a gun to my head, never mind pick their members out of a lineup.

Lotta straight-up metal on that chart.

Just got an email about Pop Evil tour dates. I know I've seen a picture of Pop Evil at one point, and one of their songs is currently playing in a truck commercial, but they are a total blank in my mind. This quote, from Loudwire.com, actually made me laugh out loud because it so perfectly reflects the barren-ness of the "discourse" surrounding this kind of music:

"UP is Pop Evil’s most ambitious album so far. It has that mainstream appeal while allowing them to push their musical boundaries a bit. It’s a satisfying album which sports a title that reflects the band’s current career trajectory."

Anyway, for much of May they're going to be on tour supporting Disturbed and Rob Zombie, playing places like Biloxi, Birmingham, two dates in Louisiana (there's an arena called the Cajundome!), etc., etc.

Here's their latest video:

the cajundome is the proud of home of the university of louisiana-lafayette's ragin' cajuns thank you very much. it's the beating cultural heart of acadiana.

do bands like killswitch engage and shadows fall count as knuckle dragging hard rock? i know they are nominally metal (decibel coverage etc) but their audience is way more cajundome than bullet belt.

that pop evil song isn't so bad! it's as good as a soundgarden song or a later monster magnet song anyway.

this was my big hard rock discovery of the year and it's like 8 years old. so, i'm kinda out of it. love this song. would never buy an entire nu-alice album though because there is no way all the songs are this good.

I think Killswitch do for sure. When I was working at Roadrunner, they definitely got songs on the radio. I don't know if Shadows Fall are even a band anymore.

three months pass...

I've been checking out this band The Temperance Movement, who are like Wolfmother crossed with Nazareth. Here's their new video, from their second album, White Bear, which comes out next month:

Yeah, they were the hot band of the moment for a little while a couple of years ago, but then they stalled out.
