Songs where John Cale Screams

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. Also trying to distinguish between outright screaming and just aggressive vocals. So e.g., perhaps wrongly, a lot of Sabotage/Live and Caribbean Sunset is on the bubble and not making the cut. Also only really going through '84 for no particular reason except I can't think of anything appropriate from the later stuff and don't want to have to dig through it all to confirm.

probably have to go with "fear is a man's best friend." always a thrill!
not quite so much on the record, but when i saw him do "cable hogue" live way back when the end was terrifying.
some pretty off the hook shrieks on his "waiting for the man" on that John Cale Comes Alive LP in the 80s...

"Leaving It Up To You"

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 29 February 2016 19:48 (nine years ago)

voting 'cable hogue'

RIGHT NOW YOU FASCIST!

Fear is a Man's Best Friend is a better song obv but Leaving It Up To You really makes me concerned.

JoeStork, Monday, 29 February 2016 20:16 (nine years ago)

Not going to vote for it, but people shouldn't sleep on guts. Like lots of these, just so perfectly constructed.

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Monday, 29 February 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

Fear is probably the one where he's got the greatest variety in his live performances, in terms of all the different ways he syncopates and breaks it down. It's almost half a song and half a template for a song.

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Monday, 29 February 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

voted Fear cuz it's the better song but the best screaming *moment* is definitely RIGHT NOW YOU FASCIST

easy! fear is a man's best friend

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Monday, 14 March 2016 00:34 (nine years ago)

One time I was listening to the Fragments version of "Fear" in my car. Just as I pulled up to the pump and rolled my window down, the freak out at the end commenced. Needless to say, the attendant was somewhat horrified.

"Fear."

Oops forgot to vote

As others have said, love the scream on the live "waiting for the man" but especially love the fact that when he sang it for the vu reunion Lou tried to get him to scream the way he had been doing in recent solo concerts & he was like "yeah nah don't feel like it"

anglos with derpy phasis (wins), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 00:06 (nine years ago)

once i was giving someone a ride home from a work event and at one point i had "fear is a man's best friend" playing on my car stereo. he looked at me like "really?" and i was like YEAH REALLY

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 00:13 (nine years ago)

Bit too much screaming and bellowing on "Helen of Troy" (the album) for my liking.

A Fifth Beatle Dies (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 12:17 (nine years ago)

surprise vote for Wilson Joliet.

sort of want to do a "songs where john cale rolls his Rs" thread but I can only think of fear's "prrrrrowl" and one other that I can't recall offhand. There must be more?

ive seen enough Good Wife episodes (s.clover), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 20:34 (nine years ago)

that "prrrrrowl" is the best part of fear imho.

ive seen enough Good Wife episodes (s.clover), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 20:35 (nine years ago)

there should be a poll for words he pronounces in a funny or amusing manner, like orghee

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 21:04 (nine years ago)

I just figured that was how they pronounced it in Wales, or the UK in general?

weakest album of that trilogy imo

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 22:57 (nine years ago)

Have we done a good artists-best-trilogy poll? Cale's Island Years vs Bowie's Berlin trilogy vs Wire's first 3, etc. It would be maddening!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 15 March 2016 23:27 (nine years ago)

listening to the album "fear" again and struck by just how much better it got as it evolved over the years. can't think of a single cale album track where i've also heard a live performance and where i still prefer the album track -- not because he's better live per se, but because he just keeps working and reworking the material and discovering new things inside it.

ive seen enough Good Wife episodes (s.clover), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 15:48 (nine years ago)

maybe some of the paris 1919 stuff where the orchestration is the point? probably not even then.

"you know more than i know" was stuck in my head for like 3 weeks recently
the part about the traps and the rats esp

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 16:05 (nine years ago)

can't find a "barracuda" live -- would love to hear it but i guess it didn't make it into rotation

Could we add in Talking Heads' Eno trilogy?

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 19:38 (nine years ago)

and the fripp exposure/gabriel 2/sacred songs "trilogy"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 19:40 (nine years ago)

keep reading this as John Cage.

There was a hole bunch of problems whit his campaigns (crüt), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 19:41 (nine years ago)

i love john cale's vocal range of emotion
most people stay within the same general range, but not john cale
he screams, he croons, he narrates, he whispers, he's all over the place

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:30 (nine years ago)

four weeks pass...

ok, now i'm leaning cable hogue again

The Hunt from Caribbean Sunset wuz robbed!!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 6 January 2017 15:04 (nine years ago)

one month passes...

ok yeah, that is a pretty good scream at 3:05 or so I guess.

on a rockpalast version of "leaving it up to you" he rolls he rolls a bunch of rs, don't think that's on the album version. he moves "crawling" to "rolling" to really go wild with it. r-r-r-r-rrolling over the hills like r-r-r-r-r-r-rrattlesnakes in the desert sun.
