The Bersch Bubble

If you ever came over to the Bersche house when we were growing up, chances are you didn’t escape without watching my oldest brother Craig’s infamous “Bersch Bubble” video filmed in the mid-70s. My brother was about 17 at the time, with ambitions of being a rock star, so he did what anyone would do: sold his car to buy a larger-than-life plastic bubble, hired the Cleveland Orchestra to score some of his songs, and proceeded to make what I consider to be one of the world’s earliest music videos. There were no home video cameras, recorders, or players in those days, so he rented a clunky TV camera along with a huge reel-to-reel video recording machine that had 2-inch-wide tape, and built a set in our garage. My brother Chris (15) filmed the video and my brother Curt (10) handled the smoke machine, burning Craig’s leg. The result is what you see here. Armed with this video, Craig tried to get on the Donny and Marie Show and the Gong Show, and even met with A&R exec John Kalodner from Atlantic Records, but for whatever reason, never quite broke through… Alas, 40 years later, here is the “Bersch Bubble” for all to enjoy.
