Laertiades (imago), Saturday, 26 March 2016 14:54 (ten years ago)

I dont know either of these but is the sample you're referring to "we had a dream last night, we had the same dream"

saer, Saturday, 26 March 2016 14:58 (ten years ago)

I misread the thread title sorry I dont know anything about this

'The Power of Love'

(1984/5: Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Huey Lewis & the News, Jennifer Rush)

emil.y, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:05 (ten years ago)

I realise that the above example is not also an example of using the same sample, but I'd say three songs hitting the charts with the same name within the period of a year is notable confluence.

emil.y, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:10 (ten years ago)

yeah that counts (not that it's for me to decide)

Laertiades (imago), Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:12 (ten years ago)

At one point in February 1993 there were songs in the top 40 based around samples of Buffalo Springfield's 'For What It's Worth' - a cover of the song by Oui 3 and Charles & Eddie's 'NYC (Can You Believe This City)'.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:40 (ten years ago)

*two songs

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:40 (ten years ago)

tag team "whoomp! (there it is)" and 95 south "whoot, there it is"

dyl, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:45 (ten years ago)

Ça plane pour moi (1977)
Jet Boy Jet Girl (1977)

Same backing track used for both songs, iirc there was a dispute between Elton Motello and Plastic Bertrand about whose was 'the original'?

emil.y, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:51 (ten years ago)

The Residents - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (1976?)
Devo - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (1977)

'Weird' covers of the Stones song. Not sure if Devo purposefully followed the Residents?

emil.y, Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:56 (ten years ago)

Cabin Crew, Sunset Strippers and Mylo all had a top ten singles based on "Waiting For A Star To Fall" at the same time

boxedjoy, Saturday, 26 March 2016 16:37 (ten years ago)

Jonas Blue featuring Dakota - Fast Car
Tobtok featuring River - Fast Car

MarkoP, Saturday, 26 March 2016 17:20 (ten years ago)

DMX - Get at Me Dog
Rascalz - Northern Touch

Both released around 97/98, both sampling BT Express's Everything Good to You (Ain't Always Good for You).

MarkoP, Saturday, 26 March 2016 17:24 (ten years ago)

N2 Deep - Back to the Hotel
Wreckx-N-Effect - Rump Shaker

Both were built around the saxophone sample from "Darkest Light" by the Lafayette Afro Rock Band and were big rap radio singles around the same time in 1992.

Somewhere in there the Candyskins had a hit with a dancey cover of FWIW (which sampled "Sympathy For The Devil" iirc).

Well, yeah, but that's not a coincidence or a sign of unconscious zeitgeist. That's a cover.

i think i only realised these were 2 different songs about a year after they crested chart-wise

art baengels (monotony), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 05:05 (ten years ago)

listening to "levels" now. seriously can't tell whether i've ever heard it or if it was just a million plays of "good feeling" and a smattering of david guetta "where them girls at."

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 05:26 (ten years ago)

how long went between portishead and tricky deploying that one isaac hayes sample

carly rae jetson (thomp), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 06:08 (ten years ago)

a few months iirc, in terms of their release dates

assume it was a deliberate/self-referential choice rather than coincidence

'Alright' by Cast and Supergrass (both UK hits in 1995).

On a tangent ikr but this thread makes me pay mind to how odd it that there're two films out about Florence Foster Jenkins.

lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 07:45 (ten years ago)

This thread spun off a film thread that spun off a discussion of that very fact, in the "films you have recently been going to avoid" thread

Rainer Weirder Faßbooker (wins), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 08:05 (ten years ago)

Aha! Count that post as an homage to the fallacy of coincidence

How long went between the fourth post in the thread and this one

glandular lansbury (sic), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 14:24 (ten years ago)

iirc Skinny were the third (actually first?) to sample 'Daydream' in 2001
