Tuomas, Friday, 1 April 2016 15:04 (nine years ago)

I hardly know to be honest

Have there really been no international Danish hits?! What about that rap trio from a few years back?

Tuomas, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:00 (nine years ago)

There was Aqua

haudrum, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:05 (nine years ago)

And Junior Senior

Alphabeat?

Siegbran, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:10 (nine years ago)

I sort of dig how Sweden had ABBA, Norway had A-ha and Denmark had Aqua. Four characters, starts with an A and ends with an A, that's the scandi-pop formula.

haudrum, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:11 (nine years ago)

"Ambition" by Donkeyboy should totally be on that list.

daavid, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:49 (nine years ago)

*sorry, "Ambitions"

daavid, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:50 (nine years ago)

Except Donkeyboy are from Norway. Oops!

daavid, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:52 (nine years ago)

Aqua half-norwegian

abcfsk, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:53 (nine years ago)

Superstar is a classic and was a staple of my years as a deeply unpopular pop DJ. "Cause you move like you got some kind of choreographer" remains one of the most awkward lines committed to record though

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Friday, 1 April 2016 17:22 (nine years ago)

the legendary Calabria/Destination Unknown was defo Danish, not sure if it's pop though

Sharkie, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:31 (nine years ago)

#28 on the US Billboard pop chart

Sharkie, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:32 (nine years ago)

anyway I voted for the NU song, for nostalgic reasons, but of course the real winner should be superstar

haudrum, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:53 (nine years ago)

Safri Duo and Toy-Box were also Danish, hmmm

Sharkie, Saturday, 2 April 2016 04:35 (nine years ago)

That NU album is a personal favourite. A couple of years later they'd have probably been a lot more successful.

Lucas Graham nominated for Grammy record of the year, song of the year, and best pop duo/group performance for "7 Years" ...so schmaltzy

i think if you collected every trait i have disliked about everyone i have ever met and merged them into one person it would be Lukas Graham, fuck this guy

hands up who thought christiania was a good idea

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 20:54 (eight years ago)

I went to christiania once. It cost like 200 dollars (10 jillion kroner) or something. As soon as I stepped inside I got a phone call that a family member had died.

Treeship, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 20:59 (eight years ago)

Wait i am mixing it up with tivoli

Treeship, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:00 (eight years ago)

Christiania is fucking weird though. Hippie murals and whimsical architecture but filled with skinhead drug dealers.

Treeship, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 21:02 (eight years ago)

it's almost like

I can't stop hearing their fucking hit at university functions.

haha, it is the worst indeed, even worse than Sheeran, I think

trying to think of any good Danish music other than Mew is fiendishly hard

Ugh, I had forgotten how much I hate Uden Forsvar.

Frederik B, Sunday, 25 February 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)

dear god, danish hip-hop

imago, Sunday, 25 February 2018 17:15 (seven years ago)

didn't mind Trentemoller and there was something else that threatened to be ok but I've not loved anything yet

imago, Sunday, 25 February 2018 17:17 (seven years ago)

ok having subjected myself to over 2 hours of danish music i feel both qualified and justified in saying the following

there's a certain kind of thomas kinkade corniness to much of this stuff, like denmark is basically made of passive-aggressively sweet fairy-stories and supercilious feelgood swagger. and when it goes for something more kinetic it's even worse. you could call it 'sunglasses pop' - let alone dead-eyed, it's no-eyed

the song by superheroes is a case in point. both insipid and rapey. a sort of horrendous uncanny-valley facsimile of us/uk pop. the band saybia is another genuine horror show. why can't they at least sing in danish? when the mew song started the feeling of relief was extraordinary. music has broken out!

sorry for insulting your great nation but this really has been traumatic for me. like, i'm sure not *all* danish music is this bad, but it really does make me wonder. i've listened to every track here and it's just endless misery

take it away, lars

imago, Sunday, 25 February 2018 18:17 (seven years ago)

Oh, the Superheroes song pretty much the only one I like :( Saybia is horrible.

Frederik B, Sunday, 25 February 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

Medina's been making great brooding pop for 10 years now. Kun For Mig was in my opinion the ultimate Scandinavian pop single of the late 00s. But everything she's done is highly listenable. Her danish language stuff in any case

abcfsk, Sunday, 25 February 2018 21:20 (seven years ago)

Denmark did give us King Diamond/Merciful Fate.

Siegbran, Sunday, 25 February 2018 21:37 (seven years ago)

haha, you're funny imago

I love all the songs on that list, and I don't really understand your take, but I appreciate the effort you put into this

niels, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)

I remember listening to some awful Danish prog band from the 70s, who were singing in Danish and being really annoyed that it sounded so much like English but with no English words.

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Monday, 26 February 2018 17:38 (seven years ago)

Savage Rose totally rocks when Anabel is singing

brimstead, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)

Anisette, I mean

brimstead, Monday, 26 February 2018 19:40 (seven years ago)

I remember talking to some guy who was like "I don't really listen to pop, but you can't deny that Lukas Graham has talent and international class". I really didn't know what to say.

Anyway i'm really out of the loop when it comes to danish music, but I think imago is spot on. I really only listen to danish music when I feel like listening to something in my own language.

haudrum, Monday, 26 February 2018 20:51 (seven years ago)

When I moved to Denmark I made an effort to go through the top 25 Danish albums as per RYM. This was a quite satisfying experience, no doubt helped by the fact that about half of that list is King Diamond/MF and I also already knew Artillery and Saturnus very well, but a very pleasant discovery was at least that Mew (despite their stupid name and their supremely punchable look) is an absolutely awesome band esp on Frengers .

In a world of Chainsmokers, Drake, Imagine Dragons and Ed Sheeran it’s a tad unfair to hold Lukas Graham against the Danes in general.
