Never were one of my particular favorites. "Conduit for Sale!," "No Life Singed Her," and "Chesley's Little Wrists" have to rank among the top most irritating annoying most self-indulgent pieces of shit I've ever heard in my life. And I don't like the lead singer's smug elitism. "Oooh! We made a song about how much we hate the Smashing Pumpkins and the Stone Temple Pilots! Aren't we cool?!"

yeah, some of those tracks on S+E really grate and will never allow me to understand that album's legend. i much much prefer Crooked Rain but I listened to it the other night and was struck by all those irritating lyrics. i'm not sure exactly what he's trying to say about music or the 'scene' in the half of the songs that make references to it in some way, but it does all seem a bit snarky and smug. some of the tunes are good, though.
