so how was Pinhas on Wed? I missed due to general exhaustion, but plan to see tonight in Oakland.

answer to thread question is one huge affirmative, especially if it's the trio w/ Antoine Paganotti on drums
they played for an hour including the encore, at first I was afraid it was all going to be too quiet but they were just make us wait for it, the final 15 minutes were soaring. I heard from several people that it was very similar in sound to the new album metatron but getting to be in the room with it meant a much larger & engrossing dynamic range, getting to watch Antoine & Pinhas take their solos.
you can see why Antoine got the Magma gig

If you so wish.

ok 21 grand, never mind.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Saturday, 12 June 2010 06:53 (fifteen years ago)
Many musicians likely envy Barry Cleveland
Pinhas should be playing the Fillmore but it's a fallen world. Just the same the 21 grand show in 2007 was fantastic and I like the shows where you can look around and realize that absolutely no one in the room is there by accident

that's kinda a defeatist attitude, though. Who knows, maybe someone with the energy and resources to develop a better venue, better artist support, better marketing for music like this will come along? I don't think it's impossible.

Coming to Chicago in May. Should I go? Playing with this guyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnR_mVN6q-Y

Marlon Magas? Fuck yeah!!!
― sarahel, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:53 (fourteen years ago)
I've sat on it and this seems like a good idea. It's at a really unlikely venue, though -- it's this place that usually has mid- to large-sized indie rock acts and like "an intimate night with Tom Petty" stuff. Booking is weird.

Oh my god Magas was so awful when I saw him open for Sonic Youth at the Metro way back when.

Wow, tell me more about how horrible it was.
― housedress? maxidress! (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
Seriously.
It was just him up on stage with a guitar run through a variety of special effects. I think it would have been infinitely better to have heard him fuck around with guitar drones for half an hour instead of listening to him shout the most inane lyrics over it. One song was nothing more than him screaming "WALKIE TALKIE/GOT A WALKIE TALKIE/DON'T NEED NO WALKIE TALKIE" over and over again.

I always want people to stop singing, so I can identify with that.

I've really liked the last few Pinhas albums, though they've all been (in whole or in part) collaborations with Merzbow. Would definitely check him out. Please report back.

The man himself just sat next to me at the end of Magas' set, which was not unpleasant. Way more industrial dancey than i expected. No singing whatsoever.
Pinhas smelled lightly of cologne, which was also not unpleasant.

Ok, so...after a brief warmup he started playing with another guy on stage (not sure who he was tbh -- he had long curly red hair and a short beard -- google tells me Duncan Pinhas? Son? Who knows). Was VERY loud, like being in a brutally loud wind tunnel or really fast car with the windows down in which someone was also playing guitar. There were passages of pulsating beats underneath the noise, no melody really, but lots of innards-shaking noise. It was compelling, and I liked it, and...then it was over. I think he played for maybe 15-20 min max?
I was confused because everyone (all 30 ppl there) started getting up and moving around and I wondered if it was one of two sets maybe? But then the staff started to put away the chairs, so I figured it was over. In sum, what I heard was pretty great, but it sure would have been nice to hear more of it. The show was only $10, though, so no harm done. But seriously, if that was it, he played one song.

I saw him play with Wolf Eyes sometime last year, and it was disappointing...not because of him, but because of Wolf Eyes, who were really underwhelming.
