Hey millennials, why do you love Stevie Nicks yet forsake Pat Benatar?

This is my dissertation topic so please only serious answers. Listen youth of today, I understand you. You love your phones, synth pop, Bernie Sanders, Beyonce think pieces and Tusk.

But why have you ignored Pat Benatar? Her greatest hits record is just as strong as Stevie's, yet there are no planned biopics or memes or snapchat discussions. Why not goddamnit?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:35 (nine years ago)

because hell is for children.

Mark G, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

I think it's because millennials tend to conflate Pat Benatar and Linda Ronstadt, and they're mad at the latter for breaking George Lucas's heart which led to him making Phantom Menace which in turn ruined their childhoods.

Have millennials embraced Stevie in any particular way tho? The Mac revival has been going on for about 15 years now. While there are similarities between the rock solo records SN put out and Benatar's stuff, PB doesn't have any songs like "Sara" or "Rhiannon" or "Landslide" afaik

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Friday, 29 April 2016 14:47 (nine years ago)

I think I just miss the "millennial" cutoff by about a year or two (I'm 1978), but when I was in high school, I remember some of the hipper kids getting into Stevie/FM because Courtney Love was a fan. She/they are certainly one of those acts that have constant, cross-generational cred--like, their fan base ranges from my parents to a 19-year-old former co-worker of mine.

She does have a song called "Hit me with your best shot" which is about being hit with a best shot.

Mark G, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:51 (nine years ago)

Pat Benatar was my dad's neighbor growing up. He didn't know her too well though, she was a bit older. But still, that just makes her inherently more banal than stevie knicks who grew up in a mythical, groovy wiccan place/california

Treeship, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:51 (nine years ago)

Also stevie nicks' music is just way better isn't it? I never heard anyone seriously gush over benatar before kornrulez69

Treeship, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:52 (nine years ago)

I think Stevie Nicks currently resides in a shimmering portal between worlds somewhere outside of Reseda.

"Linda, that girl looks just like Pat Benatar!"

"I know. Wait. There are three girls here at Ridgemont who have cultivated the Pat Benatar look. Chanel Semlar ... Mary Ann Zlotnick, in the red tights ... "

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:53 (nine years ago)

I don't think I 'got' Benatar back in the day but a recent review of her '80s product has brought its quality to light.

Your Ass Is Grass And I Will Mow It With My Face (Old Lunch), Friday, 29 April 2016 14:54 (nine years ago)

I don't know why but this thread also brought to mind that Fast Times scene for me, Josh.

Your Ass Is Grass And I Will Mow It With My Face (Old Lunch), Friday, 29 April 2016 14:54 (nine years ago)

Also, I'm thinking that there is something about PB that scans as "80s" in a not-cool (i.e. not Prince, Kate Bush, synth-pop, etc) way.

Maybe if they heard how badass she sounds in interviews?

Treeship, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:55 (nine years ago)

But is she comparable at all to a figure like prince or kate bush? Those two are/were visionaries

Treeship, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:56 (nine years ago)

As a 1978er, I consider myself on the millennial cusp. Pat Benatar was easily confused with Linda Ronstadt or maybe your friend's mom.

how's life, Friday, 29 April 2016 14:58 (nine years ago)

Pat Benatar is an amazing singer, but yeah her tracks are dated in a way that Fleetwood Mac classic stuff isn't -- tho I'm not sure they're dated any more than "Stand Back" is (the Prince connection might help that, or maybe just Nicks having a head start in the "cool" dept).

haha I never confused Benatar and Ronstadt

Dominique, Friday, 29 April 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)

Timespace is a helluva better comp than Benatar's Best Shots or whatever. The difference is that Nicks is weird.

Treeship, Friday, 29 April 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)

PB not comparable to either of those--I was just trying to suggest that millennials will cherry-pick the "best" parts of an era like the 80s while ignoring the artists who more represented solid craftsmanship. Understandably, I suppose--I can't imagine P4k reviewing reissues of her back catalogue if they were to come out right now.

(fwiw, listening to Best Shots on Spotify right now)

Forever LXI (rip van wanko), Friday, 29 April 2016 15:03 (nine years ago)

they've got this in common: my favorite Benatar and Nicks songs need synths ("I Can't Wait," "Stand Back," "Invincible").

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 April 2016 15:04 (nine years ago)

Benatar also never exhibited any real rock star quirks or lived the kinda rock star life Nicks did -- she was a classically trained opera/vocal student, she met her future husband while recording her first album and they've been together like 40 years now, etc., etc. Lifestyle-wise she's nowhere near as "interesting."

That said, she's a tremendous vocalist with an incredible range even now. I've always been a fan of hers. ("Precious Time" and "Little Too Late" are way underrated tracks of hers.) (Also her longtime drummer was named Myron Grombacher, which is the least likely rock name around.)

gonna repost:

Stevie Nicks: Let me state this here and now: We did not have a sexual relationship--I did not let that happen.

Details: How did you meet?

Stevie Nicks: When we were recording "Stand Back" I decided to be really blatant and call Prince up and tell him that I had been inspired to write the song while listening to "Little Red Corvette." I told him that I figured my song was half his. He came over to the studio where I was recording and listened to it--as I turned extremely white and started to shake. Then he walked over to the piano and put on a really incredible keyboard track. And not only did Prince make it up right on the spot, he played it with only two fingers. Then he left.

Details: Did you see him again?

Stevie Nicks: Yes, when I was on the road a year or so later. I was sick, and Prince brought some cough syrup up to my hotel room. He was sweet--he walked around the room folding things, fluffing pillows, tidying up in general. Then he gave me a spoon of it himself. But when I asked for another spoonful he changed--he said, "I didn't come all the way up here just to get you hooked on another substance!" Then he left.

Details: Do you still see him?

Stevie Nicks: No. I was at the premiere of Purple Rain, and in the scene where he slaps Apollonia I freaked and had to go sit in the bathroom. Afterward I went back to see him, and when he asked why I'd left, I had to tell him, "When you popped Apollonia, it kinda popped my brain." He looked at me like it just killed him. We've never spoken since. (sighs) It’s a shame, really...we were alike in so many ways.

Details: Such as?

Stevie Nicks: Well, for one thing, we both liked wearing black chiffon around the house.

lol i worked a corporate event a year or two back where they were the featured musical entertainment, and i remember the speakers were instructed very specifically to refer to them as Pat Benatar And Neil "Spyder" Giraldo, which cracked me up because where the hell did that nickname come from? i watched the Benatar episode of Behind The Music and knew all about Giraldo's role in her career but they never called the dude "Spyder"!

as far as Benatar being 'cool with millenials,' for what it's worth "We Belong" is one of my favorite songs of hers and i feel like it's had a little revival lately. aside from the aforementioned Wye Oak cover, it was sung in Pitch Perfect 2 and a recent episode of "The Last Man On Earth."
