arthur russell via d'angelo?
― de l'asshole (flopson), Monday, 30 May 2016 17:55 (nine years ago)
Listening to this now. Very cool.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 30 May 2016 23:27 (nine years ago)
gonna be a great summer album
― de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 31 May 2016 01:08 (nine years ago)
This is very nice. I don't hear much Russell, maybe more like Weldon Irvine and Skip Spence?have you seen him live Flopson? I see he's playing casa del popolo on Thursday
― rob, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 13:29 (nine years ago)
i've seen him play at random shows but it was very different from this, like faltering ramshackle post-punk. might not make it to the show on thursday as i'm moving this weekend... :-(
i hear russell in the phrasing and also the quavering quality of the vocals in some parts. don't recognize those other two names you mention though
― de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 31 May 2016 14:46 (nine years ago)
oh he's opening for USAOUTOFVIETNAM, definitely not gonna go to that. i'll definitely catch him whenever he headlines a show for this stuff though
― de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 31 May 2016 14:48 (nine years ago)
'I Felt The Evening Come Through The Window' sounds undeniably like Russel imo
― de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 31 May 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)
yeah on second listen I can hear more of what you mean re Russell. It seemed like an odd reference to me cuz I was picking up on much more hippie influences, hence Spence and Irvine, to be kind of reductive (Spence is falling-down 60s folk/rock and Irvine is spacey 70s soul/jazz; could throw a bit of "If I Could Only Remember My Name" in too, though obv the vocals are quite different), which is more what I was hearing on the first go through. anyway, it's a great album and it's not like it sounds super retro, it just reminded me of some stuff I really like. It's a great morning album fyi
― rob, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 15:40 (nine years ago)
i really like this. and it sounds pretty contemporary to me. maybe one of the better "new album" experiences i've had in awhile

cute. <3 that he chose a song that is 1:35 long on the album to make a video for. this album has been a staple all summer, thanks for making this thread

new name is bad, new tune is good
― flopson, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 20:51 (seven years ago)
true. what's weird is his real name is perfectly nice, Jean-Sebastien Audet
― rob, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 21:54 (seven years ago)
new album is so good
― flopson, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 23:52 (six years ago)
finally got a chance to listen to this. It's really lovely, perfect dusk music. The scrappy/sketchy approach fits well alongside the new Solange.
― rob, Monday, 18 March 2019 17:37 (six years ago)
lol just noticed there's a song called "Dew of the Dusk" which presumably put that idea in my head
― rob, Monday, 18 March 2019 17:42 (six years ago)
um holy mother of god this new album is great. all the keyboards sound incredible, but even after the variety of the first 12 tracks i was surprised that 'that don't make it so' sounds so much like an outtake from d'angelo's voodoo
― to halve and half not (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 April 2019 15:16 (six years ago)
I tend to play this in situations where I can't pay attention to track names, but "Curtain of Rain" has really stood out for me
― rob, Monday, 15 April 2019 15:26 (six years ago)
one of the best albums of the year so far
― flopson, Monday, 15 April 2019 17:22 (six years ago)
i also tend to just let this wash over me and don’t know track names but ‘The Truth’ is the one that’s on rn and man, u could just live in its balmy strum. he has a great knack for those gentle peeling curlicues of feedback
― flopson, Monday, 15 April 2019 17:27 (six years ago)
not necessarily that similar to YJ but this my other fav youngster montreal sick chops indie soul band https://sickmtl.bandcamp.com/album/conspiracy-theorist
― flopson, Monday, 15 April 2019 17:28 (six years ago)
This is just incredible. Would've easily been top 10 on my list, if I'd heard it in time...
― Soundslike, Saturday, 14 December 2019 01:33 (six years ago)
extremely slept on
― flopson, Saturday, 14 December 2019 06:29 (six years ago)
Checked it out after seeing it on Ted Gioia’s list. Liking it a lot, some similarity to the Kelsey Lu album which sadly seems to be overlooked in eoy polls.
― Dan Worsley, Saturday, 14 December 2019 09:36 (six years ago)
Only thing in years that I've bought based on the cover, though tbf it was very cheap. Worth the few dollars of course.
― geoffreyess, Sunday, 15 December 2019 05:12 (six years ago)
brilliant album, though that first track kinda towers over the rest
― 10,000 mani-gecs (voodoo chili), Sunday, 15 December 2019 05:35 (six years ago)
the same by different means wound up my favorite album of the year last year. i stand in awe of its beauty.
anyway, he has a new track and it's very pretty laurel canyon vibes

― mozzy star (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:12 (five years ago)
nice! starting to look like every single artist I like is going to release an album this year
is "For Props" new? I love it, as usual it reminds me of half a dozen other things without seeming at all imitative
listening to "Victim" again now and, damn, I'm pissed I have to wait until September for this whole thing (both tracks have pretty summer-haze atmospheres)
― rob, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:07 (five years ago)

― i got a homogenic björk wine farmer permabanned (voodoo chili), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:52 (five years ago)
i really love exploring the corners of this guy's mind. after first listen, feels less sprawling and ambitious than last year's album. the shorter track lengths of that one played to his advantage, i think. if there was an experiment you didn't like, it would be over in 90 seconds or less. this time, the experimental tracks drag a bit--but the poppier, ballad-y tracks are gorgeous and well-crafted. of course, first impressions usually mean little-to-zero when evaluating yves jarvis releases, considering how the same but by different means evolved in my mind from a pleasant curiosity to my favorite album of last year.
― i got a homogenic björk wine farmer permabanned (voodoo chili), Friday, 25 September 2020 14:29 (five years ago)
haven't listened to the new one yet but 'same by different means' is such a classic album
― flopson, Saturday, 26 September 2020 06:33 (five years ago)
New album is probably a top 10 of the year for me. One of my best musical discoveries of the year.

The new album is so lovely. The best hangover album I've heard in a while
― J. Sam, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 13:54 (five years ago)
Yeah, this is awesome. The last album still eludes me a bit but I find I'm sinking into this one pretty easily.

not quite sure what I think of it tbh, I feel like it might make more sense in an album context?
― rob, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:32 (four years ago)
new album 'the zug' came out last friday. i'm digging it, particularly this little groove machine of a track

― in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 19 May 2022 19:30 (three years ago)
Holy shit thanks, how did I not hear about this?? Sundry Rock Song Stock was maybe my favorite album of 2020
― J. Sam, Thursday, 19 May 2022 21:58 (three years ago)
starting to think that the zug is a major step up from sundry, and while it doesn’t approach the sprawl of the same but by different means, he makes up for it by packing his songs with fascinating diversions, and by focusing more on rhythm. he also seems to be an excellent guitar player
― in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Sunday, 12 June 2022 19:16 (three years ago)
I'm not sure I ever listened to The Zug (should correct that...), but bandcamp alerted me to two of his new songs today and they are so good:

oh nice. "gold filigree" is amazing
― voodoo chili, Friday, 6 December 2024 15:21 (one year ago)
not that "the knife in me" isn't, to be clear
― voodoo chili, Friday, 6 December 2024 15:24 (one year ago)
yeah the latter is maybe a little slight (which is kind of a silly thing to say about any YJ track tbf) but Gold Filigree was def the one that really impressed me

― imago, Thursday, 10 April 2025 07:44 (nine months ago)
I meant to bump this yesterday as I've been listening to it a lot lately, really genius stuff! I was super stressed when it came out and the hyperactivity was too much then, but now I really love how he's crammed ideas and beautiful sounds into every bar
― rob, Thursday, 10 April 2025 12:41 (nine months ago)
i kinda want him to make a whole album that sounds like first 30 seconds of “with a grain”
― flopson, Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:10 (nine months ago)
yeah co-sign all that, this is my favorite album of his since the same but by different means
― gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Thursday, 10 April 2025 19:55 (nine months ago)
agreed about "with a grain" which sounds about halfway between Resavoir and Fievel Is Glauque
― rob, Thursday, 10 April 2025 20:50 (nine months ago)
Oh I did compare it to Zach Phillips when I first heard it!

the videos he’s posting on instagram where he solos over clips of john mayer (and others) talking about his albums on podcasts are pretty hilarious
