Three Cheers for DJ Marky

Well, as you all may know I'm not really a drum and bass fan. So last night I went to see Jon Carter play when alot of my friends were going to see DJ Marky. Anyway I had a fantastic time as usual at Carter and it was so good I decided to go to a party afterwards with some of the people who were at Marky.

So we got to the house and walked in the door only to find DJ Marky in the living room playing records and dancing like a loon, the guy played till about 8 that morning! I still don't quite get drum and bass but it was a great night nonetheless, total respect to the Brazilian for actually coming to a private party and doing his thing.

I didn't really make that sound very interesting but have any of you got stories like these?

Ronan you'll *never* get drum & bass if you go by DJ Marky! Where the hell the guy got his big rep from I'll never know.

Unless it was for being nice (obv that last post of mine was unnecessarily snarky and deflatory)

I still can't understand any of it, I heard tune after tune after tune and it still just bugs me so much, this nagging notion that this is music, it does sound good, and yet I can't physically respond to it. In fact I'd almost say I hate drum and bass, despite my efforts, it makes me so mad when I think of all that pent up dancenergy from the last 8 hours or so.

(maybe from being nice, these are the kind of periphery stories which people might use to make you think something new about an artist)

maybe from playing very exciting & thrilling dj-sets?
i just saw him play once (Pukkelpop 2001, together with Patife) & that was one of the best d&b-sets i have ever witnessed...

I have to say I found him easier to take than most D and B I've seen, but that's cos he's quite housey.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 3 November 2002 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

...which basically is a refreshing relief after so many - status quo - d&b sets i heard the last couple of years.

last week various friends and friends of friends and so on were putting on a gabber/hardcore/ambient/techno night in doyle's (a pub in dublin with a fairly small function room, there were maybe 100 people there, mainly crusties and free party people,as well as a few random punters),and about halfway through the night asian dub foundation turned up,having just played the ambassador...they hung around for a while,as someone legged it off to get a mic,and then a random free party dj got up,started mixing drum and bass, and one of the adf mc's started bainging it out,he was rhyming for ages as two djs played back to back...i'm not really into drum and bass either, and when i do like it i'm never really arsed with mcs,but this guy was excellent...

based on "LK" at least, Marky may be the finest current D&B Popist
unfortunately the single doesn't come with the ace scratching he did on TOTP

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 3 November 2002 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, many hardcore D&Bists abhor "LK". dontcha just luv it!

I don't see how he's much different to any of the other popist d&b producers around at the moment, many of whom (e.g. High Contrast) have better tunes and better beats.
