i mean we do live in a world of jam band fans and juggalos and hot topic screamo lovers, but.....

there are all kinds of bad rave fashions and eras. this is true.

i confess i have always hated the mixture of curdled kidz stuff and drugs. i never even liked the grateful dead dancing bear. but then i'm not a fan of regression. i always thought if drugs - and drug music - had any promise it was the promise of seeing things in a new way and possibly learning how to move forward with that knowledge. not go back to the womb. oblivion thru drugs is another thing altogether however...everyone likes a little oblivion now and again even if its a netflix and ice cream binge.

I enjoyed going to raves back in the 90s, but never could get on board with the fashion, especially the giant pants
― Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)
some kidz hear it orbital / cyclical / heliocentric / "gravitational" rather than 'new' and groove accordingly?

I had big pants, but not that big. I hung a small stuffed animal off the belt loop for a while. I wore candy, but not that much. I wore a visor at night. I had a chain wallet. I retrieved a ski jacket from my parents house last year that still had a glow-in-the-dark pacifier in the pocket.
I would never do any of this again. The pants were very comfortable though. It's nice to be surrounded by all that swooshing fabric.

^^ Raver comic written by none other than Star Trek's Walter Koenig (Chekov). I guess he'd know, right??
I still have a copy of all three issues of Raver, btw
― Tom Violence, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 20:27 (nine years ago)

I walked around the place in Camden Market at Xmas. The one that sells all the glow in the dark stuff.Didn't strike me until later that the fashion was like 25 years old. I may have been 1/2 asleep at the time though. Had a very early start. & maybe the novelty of the blacklight / ultraviolet seemed fun at the time. Wasn't buying anything anyway.
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 21:28 (nine years ago)
The second pic scott posted is wearing a Pikachu. Pokemon didn't exist until the mid-90s. The rave scene was late 80s to early 90s. Ergo, that is not a raver.

Back when I worked in the warehouse one of the secretaries had an autistic son who worked there during the summers. One year he showed up visored and wide-jeaned with pages of printouts from hyperreal.org and he wrote p*l*u*r* in highlighter on a bunch of the shelves. I remember one of the printouts was something like this

i feel like with juggalos they are making the best of a bad situation and i tend to go easy on them. they really just need a hug.

the japanese can even make screamo snappy.

Jesus, I remember that image. Close to the end of my raving days, my mother was regularly helping a schizophrenic woman from her church. Would bring her groceries, drive her to appointments, long conversations on the phone to help talk her through her problems, trying to help in disputes with neighbors and such, etc. My mom's a saint. One day she approached me because the woman had seen something on TV and decided that DJing trance music would be therapeutic for her. I was kinda relieved to explain that I didn't know the first thing about DJing.

― albvivertine, Thursday, 9 June 2016 09:53 (nine years ago)
I just see a LOT of EDM types at raves in raver clothes and consider them ravers. Some of them look great. Lot of rave in seapunk/vaporwave type aesthetics too.
― albvivertine, Thursday, 9 June 2016 10:01 (nine years ago)
I loved the Rainbow Brite movie as a kid, had no idea it was raver favourite!

Hyperreal, which was for the most part years out of date when I first started going to parties in 97, still has some good pre-jnco raver pics:

ravers of the first wave just dressed as if they were all on holiday in the balearics so that was a pretty good look. at least in Britain 88-90ish. the pre-Acid Ted era. it was pretty individual too, or more so than the mid 90s Gatecrasher type lot were, who all seemed to look identical. any scene that's got a uniform is a bad scene IMO. especially if you work all week in a place that has a dress code.
the late-to-the-party 1991/92 Acid Teds look was the worst but i'm never sure if it wasn't just a few blokes in each town rather than a nation-wide thing

I know, look at the size of their feet! Undercover Drug Squad for sure
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 13:14 (nine years ago)
that is a great idea for a new t.v. series by the way. drug cop swept up in ravemania of the early 90's. i'd watch that. the costume designer could have a field day.
― scott seward, Thursday, 9 June 2016 13:39 (nine years ago)
The thing that always baffled me about raves I went to was that there were actual cops there with massive amounts of drug deals going on all over the place. I think they were either corrupt or they'd only get involved if there was an emergency of some dort.
