leanin towards Sugah Daddy mostly cuz that was the point at which (on first listen) my being stunned/surprised at the album turned into just pure joy

As noted on the other thread, Till It's Done because it's a special moment in the record for me where it suddenly feels like the heavens have opened up. As much about its context in the record as its goodness as a standalone track. Could have picked a few other tracks though.

Really Love is p much the only song I listen to from this any more, Betray My Heart a little too I guess. I do like this album but it doesnt come close to Voodoo for me. Or even his debut.

Charade certainly has the iconic lyric of the record

I thought of the Back to the Future tracks as the album's weak links before I saw it live and he played them both at once. Such a groove.

i think this album was the best first listen experience i've ever had. i was two beers deep and started playing "ain't that easy" and completely lost my shit

I love Till It's Done the most. The Charade probably second.

"Ain't That Easy" is so good, the whole first five song run is 10/10, second half isn't as strong imo. Voting for "1000 Deaths" because it just completely blew my head off when I heard it.

Voted Sugah Daddy. I always play that song for people, and they always get this big grin on their faces.

Sugar Daddy is such an amazing arrangement -- it sort of suggests hooks that aren't really there. Subliminal Funk... But 1,000 Deaths is my shit. Like Sly crossed with fIREHOSE.

It's such a different record from Voodoo it's hard to compare. I can't say I like one more than the other but I think I get a lot more out of Black Messiah at this time in my life.

1000 Deaths actually reminds me of this Bernard Purdie video I just watched where he was playing some grooves for a Japanese audience, and it is just like the heaviest thing I have ever heard. Questo and Pino kind of approach that level of heaviness on that track.

I'm glad people love "Betray My Heart" - the way the horns get carried away at the end still makes me giddy. "Prayer" is another favourite.

"Another Life" is too beautiful for me to not vote for it, whole album is obvs incredible though

i cant really remember these songs in my head, except for maybe charade or 1000 deaths (i enjoy walking around doing a dangelo murmble). does anyone walk around singing anything from here? not that it really matters. not everything has to do that for you. and when its on, i love it. but for some reason im not recalling the second half that well. anyway, id vote for another life or tutu or prayer. only song i dont like that much is back to the future. something about that rhythm thats a bit dull.

I sing 'I will never... betray... myyyy heart' quite a bit. Mostly I sing stuff like 'dududududu dudu dudu' (Sugah Daddy, of course) or whistle the theme to The Door. So much about the instruments.

the whistling on "the door" kinda makes it unlistenable to me & i always want "another life" to be more than it is so i feel like the album sort of peters out

1000 Deaths is gonna get good votes from the weird music voting bloc (hiyo)

there's some stylistics tune with a sitar on one of their classic albums that i've always loved and another life totally feels like an homage to that

The album peters out toward the end for me too, but partly just because there is so much going on in each track that I lose stamina.

I just listened to this whole thing on my morning commute and if anything I was surprised at how much of the back half I actually remembered, stuff like the Door is great

so many different faves kind of enhances this record for me -- love The Door, love Back to the Future (both parts), don't actually love the poppier stuff on this record as much (Charade, Really Love). Voted 1000 Deaths, but 2 or 3 others very close behind

Ain't That Easy is what has always stuck with me for some reason

I love that Charade is, sonically, the 'lightest' track on the album - like it's made out of air and zephyrs and wispy diaphanous silk - but lyrically the heaviest.

1000 deaths for me...sounds like a unreleased Eddie Hazel track...brilliant

I do love 1000 Deaths, I wish the mix weren't so murky-sounding though.

1000 deaths is incredible though marred by the sampled NOI speech which for me symbolises those parts of the NOI im not really so into (which is a whole other thread, though one i would be happy to take part in). having to hear it everytime i put the song on irritates me.

the fred hampton part also makes more sense for the song.

I have definitely sung "Really Love" to my gf a lot of times.

It's weird how few of the lyrics I know to this album considering how many times I've listened. I have a lot of nonsense syllables that I sing along.
