help me find male-fronted contemporary alt-rock that doesn't bore me to death

Most of my favorite albums of the last few years have been from bands of women or at least women vocalists. Wolf Alice, Le Butcherettes, Warpaint, Screaming Females, Mourn. These bands harken back to late-80s/early-90s alternative rock for me: stuff that veers between hard/angry and epic/druggy/mystical. Grunge and shoegaze are sorta the main signposts, but not the only touchstones. I've been really happy to listen to so many bands with woman vocalists, especially because as a teenager I used to largely ignore women musicians. I had a lot of catching up to do - both in terms of music history and in terms of paying attention to my own surroundings. Obviously there are so many women who are superior practitioners of rock and roll.

I'd like to hear some good current albums with men singing though. There are undoubtedly thousands of options from throughout music history if I want to hear some dude bellowing about some shit. But at the same time I like to keep current with music and it feels off-balance that I haven't been connecting with any recent bands with male singers. And I'm explicitly trying to find newer bands, so stuff like the Failure reunion or the most recent Queens of the Stone Age album doesn't count.

Every time I try to listen to a modern alternative band with a male singer, I don't find anything there worth listening to. A lot of times I'll try to look at bands that are associated with the bands I like. When I was listening to Screaming Females, I saw that they were on a split with Jeff the Brotherhood, so I checked out Jeff the Brotherhood and wasn't impressed. For a while, Warpaint was friends with Foals, mentioning them on social media a lot and stuff. So I checked out Foals and they were ambitious and impressive in their own way but ultimately didn't hit the mark for me. I tried out some of Wolf Alice's tour mates last week. Can't remember who it was and I can't even remember what they sounded like. It goes on and on and nothing sticks.

I've also tried just going through record review after record review, hoping to stumble on something. But this isn't really the most popular aesthetic at the moment. Even narrowing Pitchfork's review filter to exclude everything except rock, the results are more like indie pop rock. I go through band after band and it always ends up being stuff that doesn't resonate with me. That's just one example and not the only source I read, but I think it still captures the general feel of what's out there.

Any suggestions? What am I missing?

I was an enormous fan of Illusion of Safety, but I keep checking in with Thrice and they've completely lost me. They sound more like rock radio alternative now, which isn't exactly what I'm going for. Has Thrice ever done a drug?

Parquet Courts lean more toward the "indie" side of things that I'm not really into.

Underground/punk can be a reasonable direction as long as it shies away from rote chord progressions. Also looking for people who sing more than yell. Like, I almost like Fucked Up. They're progressive, artistic punk. But the gritty hardcore vocals aren't what I'm interested in right now.

yes! when I first saw them, at a street fair in 2006, i was like just fuckkk I've finally found a band like At the Drive-In - really heavy, really melodic, with a totally unhinged live show. Just explosive energy. And great, great tunes.

flappy bird, Friday, 17 June 2016 07:01 (nine years ago)

Came here to mention Wild Beasts and Field Music, who are the only two British 'indie' bands I've given a shit about for about the last seven years or so. Nice to see they've each already got a mention.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 17 June 2016 08:31 (nine years ago)

I'd have thought that both Wild Beasts and Field Music were exactly the sort of overgentrified 'rock' music that would bore the OP senseless. Like the first post is obviously fishing for a particular aesthetic rather than "please list a load of male-fronted bands you like".

There are very few questions to which "listen to more Australian indie-rock" would be the answer though.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 June 2016 08:42 (nine years ago)

Like a big problem is that a lot of this stuff is either an over-cautious recreation of a sound (like I dunno Yuck or whoever) or playing so safely within the well-established rules of a genre that it can sound lacking in conviction, which certainly isn't an accusation you could level at most actual early 90s grunge or alt/rock. A lack of genuinely compelling voices/frontmen doesn't help either.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 June 2016 08:46 (nine years ago)

Wild Beasts' first two albums are definitely not overgentrified, and the homing they've done to their sound on the subsequent two places them in not disimmilar territory to Warpaint, in my mind.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:23 (nine years ago)

...stuff that veers between hard/angry and epic/druggy/mystical. Grunge and shoegaze are sorta the main signposts...

matt dc otm. a lot of folks responding don't even seem to have read the op.

oculus lump (contenderizer), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:25 (nine years ago)

Wild Beasts also hit the genuinely compelling voices / frontmen mark, I'd argue, especially on Two Dancers.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 17 June 2016 09:31 (nine years ago)

I think it's reasonable to expect people to post off-base responses in light of my original post. It didn't help me that I'm looking for a feel rather than a specific type of thing. What is "early 90s alt-rock"? Obviously alternative rock is a bullshit category to start out with. So are grunge and shoegaze. They mean different things to different people. For me is something like "the first few lollapaloozas but minus any funk metal or pearl jam". Or "a 1992 episode of 120 minutes excluding anything openly influenced by R.E.M. or XTC." Highly subjective territory, to be sure.

Matt's points about compelling voices/frontperson is salient for sure. Ditto "conviction".

Listened to Naomi Punk and Quest For Fire last night (both their most recent records).

Naomi Punk was incredible. It absolutely fits given the criteria, but was also like nothing I expected. Some very unusual, creative grooves.

Quest For Fire also hit the spot. It was a little more monotonous, but not unpleasantly so.

Thanks for the tip. Comet Control are indeed even more alt-rock! Quest for Fire had more of a psychedelic prog vibe. Comet Control have tighter songs. It's great stuff and exactly hits the mark.

The Hey Colossus recommendation was also solid. I went with their recent Radio Static High album, which I gather is also a more rock-oriented departure from previous, dronier work which I haven't checked out yet.

I have no idea what's going on with dlp9001. I've been upfront about listening to music with women and specifically about being in a long phase of mostly listening to music by women or woman-led bands. I've just been having problems navigating the immense forest of music that is available these days. People have been really, really helpful in showing me the way. dlp9001 is a long-time, always-been-there poster who as far as I know, I've had no beef with. I do not understand his reaction here.

I am not the only person to ask such questions in ilx history:
