5. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
4. Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
3. Abba - Gold
2. Britney Spears - "Baby One More Time" (single)
1. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

fred solinger, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm.. Nos 1-4 form a fairly good indication of what ILM is about. Number 5 forms a good indication of how loudly Ally can shout.

It's an outrage blah blah.

Nick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh my, no surprises there

Jeff, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello? You couldn't get into the list even at the bottom without more than one vote - how is this an indication of how loudly I can shout? Cockfarmer.

Actually I'm totally surprised. Re: MBV - did Ned vote multiple times for it, once for each copy he owns? ;)

Ally, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And so the list is saved, the Guitar Woosh beats The Pop Queen, but really the top-3 is pure ILM IMHO. Magnetic Fields are now officially overrated. But hey...at least no Queen is Dead, which is a big shocker methinks. Now I can retire, watch a crap Ajax game and make up a list of plus & minus.

Omar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as a matter of fact, the Manics would probably class as my least favorite band of all time.... but i didn't vote.. It would be much easier for me to compile a list of the 100 worst records ever.

Peter, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I propose we forward the list to Kevin Shields and coax him into a triumphant return with his celestial remix of "One More Time". And let me be the first to coin the term "breastgazer"!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's totally an awesome term, and I'm going to use it all the time now.

Ally, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who the fuck are the Manic Street Preachers? And no AR Kane, Bark Psychosis or Magazine? Damn... cockfarming... list. Oh well, at least Main Source made it somewhere.

Andy, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Breastfarmer

Nick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I've got 3 of those records, but I never voted for them!

james e l, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick - I think I saw Breastfarmer supporting Airport Bloke at the Monarch some time last year...

stevie t, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where can I buy some of these "breastgazer" CDs you speak of?

Josh, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

andy, you voted for main source?

ethan, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, the pop-fetishists really got behind Britney. I'm quite pleased (and surprised) by the non-appearance of The Smiths in the top 10, as I had this notion they were ILM's Beatles. The best thing anyone's ever said about our # 1 comes comes from Chuck Eddy: "sleepy noise bullshit".

Patrick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fred, how many people voted ?

Patrick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apparently, me, Ned and Fred, 8,000 times each.

Ally, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan -- yep, I voted for Breaking Atoms. When I wonder why I haven't bought many rap records in the last few years, I remind myself of Main Source, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Paris, Lakim Shabazz and Gang Starr. "Thaaaat's why." I got into many verbal squabbles in high school about Main Source's dominance over A Tribe Called Quest and the early undies who swam/swim in their wake. Anyone who denies the brilliance of Breaking Atoms gets a Twin Hype 12" knocked upside the head.

Andy, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I weep bitter tears.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to say this again -- I DID NOT VOTE. I will merely note that it's nice to see that even without saying a word on the matter rightness and goodness prevailed.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'breaking atoms' is, of course, the greatest album of all time. i have a 45 king compilation from 1989 with lakim shabazz on two of the cuts, i've really never seen him on anything else except an early queen latifah song. did you vote for a gang starr album? i choose hard to earn which might have jinxed it because i'm guessing anyone else would have gone for daily operation or step in the arena, which fucks everything up.

oh yeah, this is the beginning of me bitching about there being only like three rap albums on the list.

ethan, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I said Abba Gold, didn't I. Didn't I, eh? I said no Queen is Dead, didn't I?

I DID.

Dr. C, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No votes for Gang Starr, although Daily Operation, Hard to Earn and Step in the Arena are all fantastic. I think I voted for three of four rap records total, admittedly. I know Fear of a Black Planet was in the top ten. Criminal Minded would have made the top 50.

Shabazz was great. Was "Black Is Back" on that comp? Yo! MTV Raps used to play that video, just a grainy B&W with him sitting on the steps in full militant stance. To the east, my brother, to the east. With a key...

Andy, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is joke, yes? Real list show up later in day?

What I find interesting, upon reflection, is that Loveless actually cruised to number one...in the Loveless v. Isn't Anything grudge match, ILM seemed to be pretty evenly split between the two, and yet if I recall correctly, Isn't Anything didn't even rate in this poll. What happened? Not that I disagree with the final outcome, but did you MBV fans just hold your nose and go with the Ned choice just to make sure MBV got their rightful place at the top of the list?

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh, don't look to me for breastgazer, it's all up to Mr. Shields to construct sonic cathedrals spacious enough for both Queen Britney and her ample cleavage. Incidentally, which had more engineers: Loveless or Britney's chest?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

patrick: 27 ilm posters participated.

my bloody valentine had four records named: loveless, isn't anything, glider, and tremolo. only loveless received more than one vote.

in the 10-6 thread, every one of the records was named, though by different people. ian white named 3 of them.

fred solinger, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is this going to be an annual event? I want to vote next time.

scott, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm the lone Isn't Anything voter? Must have been the phase of the moon.

Andy, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd blame Ned, but things would in fact be much worse if he'd had anything to do with it - though Disintegration *did* make it, didn't it ? Hmmm...

Patrick, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I pulled up some of the slack left behind by Ned (re Disintegration, Loveless, at the very least). Sometimes the similarities are frightening...then he goes off on some tragically misguided rant against GYBE, and then I can feel assured that I am my own person. Yay!

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You *are* your own person, you back-bacon loving hoser.

Keep in mind I wouldn't be such an active campaigner against GYBE if it wasn't for that annoying live experience. Bah. They're the post-rock Ramones in that they're a one trick pony, and while it's a good trick (and the introduction of major keys on the last album didn't hurt at all), that's about it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why this list was a good list:

(1) The top three entries are obvious but all brilliant.

(2) No Rolling Stones.

(3) No Revolver.

Why this list was a bad list:

(1) Hardly any hip-hop on it at all.

(2) No New Order.

(3) No Saint Etienne.

(4) No Orbital.

(5) Hijacked by Ally's Florida-style voter fraud.

(6) The Elephant 6 record showing up in the top 10.

(7) Mostly albums, even though everyone knows that singles are better than albums.

I didn't vote, and I'm officially very disappointed in the lot of you who did.

Ian White, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, shut up already, Ian. Does Fred need to publish my fucking ballot to get people off my ass? Kate even just told me she didn't vote, so it's totally official that I only voted once, no murky people- accusing-her-of-being-me shit going down.

I voted for St. Et. I blame Tom, he must not have given He's On The Phone any props at all.

Ally, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what - NO STUMP !

methinks yous all lickin' up to tha birthday girl :)

AND ON THE DAY I SAW STUART STAPLES HAS A BEARD - AAARRGGHH !!!!!!!

geordius incredulous, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it's clear that most people voted quite politically... ;-) That's all part of the fun, though, I guess. I own two of these (4 and 1), and haven't heard two of them (5 and 3). I sort of wish I had voted now, but with finals it was nigh impossible to think clearly about records. I'm a bit surprised that no New Order made the list, though! I would have thought at least Substance would've reared its head... Also, I was wondering: Fred, did you have to break ties, and if so, how did you do it?

Clarke B., Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would assume that if there was a tie it was broken by how many ballots the record was on.

How many different records were submitted?

Jeff, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

its funny that baby one more time has become like a canonised mbv/smiths/kraftwerk whatever type record, where people vote for it in that same 'i feel i should' way (i'm not immune - voted for fall and kraftwerk when listening to nelly more often at moment)

personally i think I Was Born To Make You Happy and Lucky, and possibly Oops and Crazy are better records, but they don't have quite the zeitgeisty impact of baby one more time i suppose.

gareth, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so wheres Christina Aguilera?

jk, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, Gareth, I'm with you there. I'll take "Lucky" over "One More Time" any day of the week.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So would I, but I think it was more one of those things where we all know the NYLPM faithful aren't going to vote for anything besides One More Time so you might as well vote for it to make sure she gets a good placing on the list, you know? Though now that I think about it I'm not 100% sure if I actually did vote for Baby One More Time. Maybe I did, I forget now.

Ally, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm surprised that The Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Leftfield and especially The Human League didn't figure anywhere in this thing.

Dr. C, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd have thought New Order over the Human League if those were the choices, but hey.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Top 10 lists are usually equivalent to premature ejaculation, and this one is no different. *sigh*

JM, Saturday, 19 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unsurprisingly, I like some of the records that have been on the list, and dislike some. Therefore I could not feel any satisfaction with it or 'ownership' of it if I had voted.

Along the prime pop ley-line of South-East London, which starts in Woolwich, bends at Lewisham and ends up at a tram stop in Croydon, at least two of us still think that a list like this is wrong in principle.

the pinefox, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What principle, Pinefox?

Dr. C, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The pleasure principle, for a start.

Nick, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And plus the reality principle also too.

Dr C: I explained my objections to this list, such as they are, over and over again when people were debating whether to do it. I don't expect you to bother to go back and look for that - but I said it all back there anyway.

the pinefox, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BREASTFARMER?!?!?

::falls off chair laughing::

Almost makes up for the abomination at Number 3 there.

I am going to steal "breastgazing" for use the next time someone asks me what my band sounds like. ;-)

masonic boom, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you do that, people will think your band sounds like Limp Bizkit.

Patrick, Wednesday, 23 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are we ever going to see individual lists? I think there were various ideas floating around about making some of them public.

Dr. C, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best thing to do would be to start a thread in which people who want their lists public can post their own, no?

So, yes, that's what I'll do then.

Tom, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what if you can't find the list you sent? hypothetically speaking of course

Geoff, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still would like to see a list with point totals and number of votes and such.

Josh, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dear Mr. Solinger: Please be advised that I would like to see a complete list of all songs voted for, with point spreads and likely dark horses for next time, a statistical analysis of who is most likely to vote for Abba, and a chart of compatibility scores between participants. This information will be used to gain funding on Loan Draw #37, at which time you will be expected to wire $1.0 million into the account of Ally Kearney Inc. Thank you for your prompt attention to this manner, and do not hesitate to call me with any questions you may have. Sincerely, Ally Kearney
Chief Financial Officer

Ally, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well he SHOULD already HAVE what I asked for since he needed it to make the list. :P

Josh, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just wanna know why my kick ass letter wasn't separated into lines like I formatted it. Fuck lines.

PS Manics kick MBV all over the ballpark. They are Derek Jeter to MBV's ....er, people who aren't Derek Jeter. I just like saying Derek Jeter today.
