Daniel Bedingfield ... bastard! (or 'All Hail Da Pop Album')

"bastard!" only because I've bought far too many CDs of late as it is, but DB's LP arrived in Belgium this past week, and about three seconds into "Blown It Again" on the listening post and I just knew this was going to be a great record and I had to have it. Far from the 'grown-up' AOR some of us were dreading (he only gets out the ol' acoustic twice IIRC), it's smart pop licks all the way. And "James Dean" is probably the weakest song here. Even the ballads work brilliantly (Will & Gareth et al - I hope you're paying attention - this is how it should be done).

Anyway, my critical faculties vanished months ago, so Tim F and Denise L to thread or something.

Oooh I want it now.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 4 November 2002 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And Tom will not wait.
But he's too rough
And DB's too delicate.

Don't you quote Axl at me young man.

Ha ha Jeff I've been gathering my thoughts re: this album. So, my thoughts:

"Blown It Again" is awesome: the sort of "next-level pop" that self-consciously next-level pop (e.g. "Pop") is always too self-conscious or just not-very-good to be. It really shows off Daniel as a pop-showman; his vocals just are endlessly captivating. Love the line "Have to admit my heart is not what it could be/Open up the box and tell me what it should be!" - at least the way he delivers it. I'm way behind on my blog updates obv. or I would have talked about this by now.

Likewise "If You're Not The One" is such a brilliantly, disturbingly prostrate ballad: a gorgeous chorus, vocals that nearly reduce me to a nervous wreck. Also slightly bizarre but endearing is James's use (here and elsewhere) of so much domestic imagery - marriage, homebuilding etc. This though is the best trembly MOR-ballad of the year outside Brandy's "Wow" and Blue's "If You Come Back".

Outside of these two tracks and the singles, I'm sort of ambivalent but cautiously positive. After how brilliant "Blown It Again" and "James Dean" are, it disappoints me that he never really goes back to that style of over-produced maximal pop with snarky, charismatic vocals ("James Dean" is so not the weakest thing here! It's a brill pop song, is what it is!).

On the other hand, everything sounds much better than it should be (by rights I should dislike "He Don't Love You Like I Love You" but it's just too nutrasweetish to begrudge) and even the mildly uncomfortable rock-out moments are appealing - "I Can't Read You" sounds like he's biting Hole's "Awful"; "Inflate My Ego" makes this the second '02 pop album to exploit the "Peter Gunn Theme". And who else thought up "Friday" - miami bass d&b punk pop?!? I need to spend more time with it, clearly.

Ironically, my favourite of the acoustic ballads is definitely the acoustic version of "Gotta Get Thru This" - its delicacy and thoughtfulness really leaps into stark relief in contrast to the garage version.

oh gawd jeff, i'll listen to it prop'ly tonight and post on CoM sometime this week.

(i am v knackered, having spent the whole weekend reassessing/reabsorbing the solo work of david thomas for t'wire, plus i have a meet-up w. mark + doomie tomorrow, plus i STILL need to finish my "escalator" piece for stylus, so "this week" is best viewed as flexible terminology :-( ).

Denise Lambert, Monday, 4 November 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim -

:-)

I'm already planning a mixtape bookended by Basement Jaxx vs ELP and "Inflate My Ego"

You're so OTM about "If You're Not The One"

The "James Dean" comment was a relative one - I do like it, I just think there are 10 more memorable tunes on the record. "James Dean" may well have the best lyrics - although those to "Friday" and "Inflate My Ego" are extraordinary also.

Denise - I sympathise. I have been trying to get my head around the Suicide LP this last weekend. You had a head start on me!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 4 November 2002 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Listening more: no ambivalence at all! The only song I don't really really like is "Without The Girl", and even that isn't bad in the least. But "Honest Questions" - how did I miss this the first few times? Awesome awesome OTT ballad!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 November 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Denise has been a bit, um, busy today over on ILE, so let me do this instead.

ultimately, I only like it because it's by Daniel Bedingfield

???
you'll have to explain that one a bit more, Tom
(I'm posting this here rather than on NYLPM for what I hope are obvious reasons)

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you know i got it a couple months ago, i liked the ballads esp 'he dont love you like i love you' but didnt listen to it for a while, tom made me pull it out again and its really all incredible, very much what justin shouldve done

i have the unenviable task of reviewing it for amg too!!

ep, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff - cos I like his eager/frustrated persona so much (which is why the rest of the review is talking about the album not that song). I mean it's a good ballad, I wouldn't hate it if it was by anyone else but it has that extra DB quality!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I think I see what Tom means - a lot of what makes "If You're Not The One" tremendous is a) his delivery, and b) that you know that tremulous self-abnegation isn't his only talent/flaw, but rather one single aspect of his inspired extremity. "If You're Not The One" is on the opposite end of a spectrum to "Shape Of My Heart"/"I Want It That Way", where the technically perfect intermeshing of emotional components (ie. voices) just overwhelms everything else. Here everything is dependent on the distinctive singularity of Bedingfield's performance - backing vocals could ruin it. (Blue's "If You Come Back" could be seen as something of a mediator here)

I mean, it could easily have been done by Westlife in typical bland fashion.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

As DL/MC recommended it, I am interested. But still.... he, Mistah Bedingfield, seems like a piggie on a helium bender.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oh nath, that comment is so last year

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I THINK THAT YOU ALL NEED TO JUST SIT DOWN AND LISTEN TO THE ALBUM.AND JEFF W LEAST HE HAS ACUMPLISHED SOMTHING UNLIKE YOU WHO OBVISLY HAS NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN CRITISISE PEOPLE BETTER OFF THAN YOU.

KERRY NUGENT, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

!!! Jeff W had nothing but praise on this thread. Googlers are so demanding!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

THE HOLE ALBUM IS GREAT

I thought it was just Courtney on her own.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
On second and third listens to "Friday":

It's not as nosebleed as I first thought. BPM considerably in excess of what I'd expected, but this is no Firestarter. Maybe the video exaggerated this.

I can however easily see how a remix of this could level entire clubs.

3:30 on the nose!

He sounds like Sting, though he sounds most like him when he says "Jamaica"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 April 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah why wasn't this song huge???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 April 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the sixth or even seventh single off the album over here so the level of promotional bother was low.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "If You're Not The One" but if the next album is all ballads I will cry.
