Inspired by the current GnR and Oasis threads.
I thought it had been done but apparently not, so an obvious one : the two biggest bands of their (short) time, in their (even shorten) imperial phase at the time they recorded these albums, US Vs UK, overlong 90s CD, over production excesses, how many guitar solos and tracks can you cram in a song, punk/diva/cool leadsinger, heroin Vs cocaine, helicopters Vs jumbo jet/tanker/swat... D'ya know what I mean ?

To me, it's an easy one : I never particularly liked YUI but it has some good songs or at least some fun aspects. BHN is terrible.
― AlXTC from Paris, Saturday, 6 August 2016 22:02 (eight years ago) link
Hum. Some mistakes : I should have made this a poll, I guess. That's what happens when you start a thread after a good dinner with some nice wine...

Oh and obviously "fool", not "cool" lead singer !

I would vote for a fuckin' Lividity album over Oasis

Voting Be Here Now solely to piss everyone off.

Guns n' Roses is like 8 million times better of a band than Oasis this is not close

I would pick UYI over Oasis' first two albums.... COMBINED!!

axl is x100000 times the frontman Liam could ever hope to be

I dunno that whole wear sunglasses and stand there with your hands behind your band and never move thing is pretty electrifying
― Pull your head on out your hippy haze (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 7 August 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link
I even watched a few of the performances where Noel sang cos Liam wouldn't participate and barely noticed the difference. Equally bored.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:33 (eight years ago) link
about the only nice thing I'll say about Oasis is I developed some early guitar playing skill playing some of Noel's leads
are you serious? GNR by a country mile.
― Poliopolice, Monday, 8 August 2016 15:30 (eight years ago) link
I haven't listened to Be Here Now since it came out (and don't plan to) but GNR are the worst, a shitty band made up of shitty people writing shitty songs, loathsome all down the line.

what can I say I have never, not once, enjoyed listening to GNR
You don't have to like GNR, but this is like that joke about the two guys who come across a hungry tiger in the jungle. You know, the one where the first guy says to the second, "I don't have to outrun the tiger. I just have to outrun you."
― Poliopolice, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:03 (eight years ago) link
Also, "Estranged" is one of the most amazing songs ever.

I like both of these things. I honestly never really understood why BHN was seen as such a massive drop in quality. It's the same thing as the first two: p decent mid-tier rip-off rock with lyrics by someone who doesn't seem to understand English, sung by someone who doesn't seem to understand singing. But good dumb fun nonetheless. UYI came to me at a more formative time in my life so it'll probably win by vote a coke-daubed nose, but there's probably a lot more from that double album that I'd happily excise.

'win my vote by a coke-daubed nose'. Really have to stop daubing my own nose with coke already.

I like some of the earlier tracks of both bands (both their debut albums are pretty good and "supersonic" and "welcome to the jungle" are simply pure great fun).Clearly by the time both bands released these albums, they were mostly done though.Still, I listened to UYI recently and there's enough to make a pretty good simple album. Some tracks could even be better than some Appetite stuff. There might be 2 decent songs on BHN and none that would qualify on a best of, for instance.

eh but it's the same thing but with 10000000000 overdubs on 7-9 minute songs, i.e. it's the same thing... on COCAINE, and thus way less palatable
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 8 August 2016 17:38 (eight years ago) link
i think one of the songs where the approach works is "my big mouth" which has so many guitar tracks it sounds like it's going to explode or fall apart for its entire duration
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 8 August 2016 17:43 (eight years ago) link
I'm confused are you saying one of these bands was NOT on cocaine?

well uyi is also extremely cocaine but at least they're attempting their thing from different angles
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 8 August 2016 18:03 (eight years ago) link
Copious cocaine use is by no means a necessarily damnable musical influence (see: Tusk, Station to Station).
― Lyle Lovitz (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 August 2016 18:17 (eight years ago) link
i think it depends on what kind of music to which its being applied, and the quality of imaginations at play. oasis wrote some good songs but had little-to-no imagination beyond their established aesthetic, and so the album where they go macro only magnifies their limitations until they're all distorted and stretched thin
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 8 August 2016 18:19 (eight years ago) link
GnR was probably also on a lot of cocaine when they did Appetite tbh, wasn't heroin the problem later in the band?
― Pull your head on out your hippy haze (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 August 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link
Oasis's "Get in the Ring" was 'Wibbling Rivalry'
