Skiffle master, pop music pioneer - but will he lose his flavour on the bedpost of death overnight?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 4 November 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck the gags, pete, this is seriously upsetting. a very, very important figure. he was to britpop what jam master jay was to hip hop - he was pretty much the foundation, or at least the conduit, for everything that came afterwards.

cumberland gap might well be the most sonically extreme number one record ever - certainly the first punk number one (and engineered by joe meek!).

very sad to hear this.

'A Very Good Year' is awesome.

Another great passes... "Rock Island Line" was given its due praise on ILM a few months back, but there was so much great stuff there. The first true British rock star.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Truly bad news. Without him all those scruffy oiks from Liverpool, Manchester and Richmond wouldn't have picked up a guitar. For that reason alone, never mind the great records he released, he's one of the most important figures in 20th century British popular music.

arse. peel was talking (and playing his tunes which all have that certain something) just a week or so ago, and recommending the upcoming tour to anyone who would listen.

a pity.

My own tribute is now on Church of Me.
