This is O.K. On paper it sounds like the best, weirdest Yacht Rock thing imaginable but I think I like most previous Thundercat releases better.
― yesca, Saturday, 4 February 2017 14:47 (eight years ago)
I'm looking forward to a full album in the mode of his last EP. I enjoyed his previous stuff, but The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam felt like he'd turned the corner from a virtuosic player and a fun artist into an indispensable artist.
― voodoo chili, Saturday, 4 February 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)
It's a weak song. In their heyday, neither Loggins nor McDonald would have let something this hookless slip out as a B-side.

is this the most annoying album ever
― r|t|c, Thursday, 23 February 2017 12:36 (eight years ago)
About to find out. Just started listening.

Yeah, this is crap. Gave up halfway through, put on Michael Henderson's Wide Receiver instead. (If you've never heard that, it's a 1980 smooth funk/bedroom R&B album by the dude who played bass for Miles Davis from 1972-75.)

Is it just me or are the lyrics on this thing offensively bad?
I'm not even a guy who listens to lyrics the first time through an album but there are some severe clunkers on most of the tracks.
― ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Friday, 24 February 2017 17:47 (eight years ago)
It's a dork-funk record if I've ever heard one. Funny the first time 'round, but I probably won't come back to this one often. I could see 14 year old me loving this
― octobeard, Friday, 24 February 2017 18:12 (eight years ago)
The hit to miss ratio is pretty bad here. I made a nice 4 track EP after removing the chaff
― calstars, Friday, 24 February 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)
This is in serious need of an edit. If you cut down the best ideas you could end with an okay 8track lp. As it stands it's way too homogenic and meandering to make it thru the whole thing.
― dance cum rituals (Moka), Friday, 24 February 2017 18:46 (eight years ago)
That said there are at least two great songs in here

"It's a dork-funk record if I've ever heard one."
^^^ THIS ^^^
― yesca, Saturday, 25 February 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)
hmmm, dunno, but I quite like this guy's meandering bass style. A lot of it reminds me of Insignificance-ear Jim O'Rourke.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 24 August 2017 13:37 (seven years ago)
I think it's great, though there's nothing on the new album as wonderful as Tron Song
― not not not not yr academy (stevie), Thursday, 24 August 2017 13:54 (seven years ago)
New one took a few spins to really click, but I'm totally digging it now. "Dragonball Durag" is great!

Ok what the fuck, this guy was in SUICIDAL TENDENCIES for 9 YEARS and no one ever talks about it
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 1 August 2020 20:42 (five years ago)
I wrote a Wire cover story on him a couple of months ago and believe you me, we talked about that.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 1 August 2020 21:01 (five years ago)
awesome I will track that down. it seems weird it doesn't come up more for how much press he gets
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 1 August 2020 21:18 (five years ago)
I swear I've heard him talk about it on a podcast, but I can't remember which. It could have been Hannibal Buress' pod, although that usually wasn't very interview-y?
― change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 1 August 2020 21:42 (five years ago)
I feel like every time I talk about him someone is like "did you KNOW he was in Suicidal Tendencies?"
― Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Monday, 3 August 2020 03:51 (five years ago)
been listening to him for 5 years now and i just heard about it this week, but then again i dont read about music much these days

i like thundercat
― John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 15:10 (four years ago)
I love him. It Is What It Is was great, but Drunk's a true masterpiece.
― anecdotal certainly but not nothing (stevie), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 15:53 (four years ago)
i love him, but on first listen, thought drunk was tamer than the earlier stuff. but thats just a first impression. nice that hes got a wider audience. saw him play live once, supporting flying lotus, and he was a 100 times better than fly lo, mainly as he brought a band and played the shit out of his bass, while fly lo seemed to just be miming along to his ableton set up with some okay-ish projections.
― candyman, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 17:18 (four years ago)
Drunk is amazing
― John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 17:57 (four years ago)
that is what my friend shared with me and tbh i still can't believe how good it is.
― John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 17:58 (four years ago)
i never gave flying lotus a chance, maybe i should. i also like kaytranada, if that's even relevant like at all.
― John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 17:59 (four years ago)
thundercat is on a lot of fly lo's stuff. fly lo is often 'brilliant' but thundercat is more pleasurable to listen to.
― candyman, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 18:01 (four years ago)
I loved the last thundercat album but haven’t heard anything else. ecstatic fusion-tactic
― brimstead, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 20:27 (four years ago)
The drummer he had on the Drunk tour was astonishing, like properly jaw-droppingly brilliant. Wish they'd cut a live album - their version of Tron Song was genuinely further evolved than the studio take.

FlyLo is literally at the intersection between Kaytranada and Thundercat, musically
― octobeard, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:40 (four years ago)
found a used copy of Drunk which I figured I had to pick up just because the format is so neat. yes it's annoying to have to change sides every 6 minutes but I kind of appreciate the dedication to making something so obnoxiously unique. anyway the music is very good but I think I prefer whiny and sometimes gross lyrics about women than I do lyrics about Goku

Didn't see this coming, but good for him, I guess? At least the commercial retains some of the goofiness of his videos.
