I was really into this stuff in ≈2011-2012, so this is as much a nostalgia trip as it is an unforgivable display of self-indulgence. I'm always looking for new music in this vein, so I welcome your "if you listen to _________, you might like _________" recommendations.

Damn! I'm unfamiliar with a lot of this but the stuff I know is all classic. Maybe "Can't Wait Too Long" or "You're a Very Lovely Woman" or "I Had a Dream I Lost You" or

A lot of good artists but many unfamiliar songs. I really like the Caravelles version of 'Hey Mama'.

Loving this compilation, thanks! "It Matters Not At All" is dreamy.

thanks, I'll have to check these out!

I'd forgotten that the Caravelles 'Hey Mama' was a cover. funny how a no-name British producer (some guy named Richard Hill) managed to reproduce the Spector/Gold Star sound so accurately using such unlikely source material (the Restless Feelin's version was typical Byrdsy folk-rock, and apparently it was their only release). I first heard it on vol. 5 of Bob Stanley's Dream Babes series.

great song! they recorded about an album's worth of material with Phil Spector, and most of it is in a similar vein, as are some of their later singles:

this is the sort of self-indulgence ilm needs more of, some really good stuff on here

ogmor, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 18:32 (nine years ago)

I haven't even listened to a third of the songs, but The Flirtations' "This Must Be the End of the Line" is my favorite discovery so far. Also great: Sunforest, Julee CruiseThe Paris Sisters and "Snow Queen". Just beautiful stuff. Thanks!

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 20:57 (nine years ago)

good stuff! lots I haven't heard too. will probably vote "It's You" pending further investigation. I presume you've listened to the entire Millennium record? If not please do, other highlights include "The Island" and "There is Nothing More to Say" among many others

the first Emitt Rhodes record would make a fine addition to this list, if you're into the Merry Go Round

and some individual tracks off the top of my head:

Clear Spot - Night Sounds Loud

ah, thanks (belatedly) for the recommendations. I'm enjoying that Clear Light album on first listen — I like how they can't seem to decide whether to pattern themselves after The Doors or the Association, so they just kind of waver between the extremes. the non-LP track 'The Susan Years' is probably closest in spirit to the material itt. I'm already big into Emitt Rhodes and The Millennium, but I'll have to give the Kaleidoscope another chance (I downloaded that Dive Into Yesterday comp a while ago but only listened to it once or twice, even though they're probably right up my alley)

Voted for the Flirtations in the end. Man, that song went straight into my brain.

Are you going to make another poll/playlist?

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 10 September 2016 06:59 (nine years ago)

I don't think I'll start another poll (though there should be more of these — wasn't there a flurry/plague of 'my 50 bestest favoritest albums of all time' polls a few years ago?) but at some point I'll post another playlist in this thread, because there's a bunch of stuff I left out.

fwiw, Inner Dialogue's 'Inner Dialogue' was part of my original playlist, but I didn't include it here because it isn't on youtube.

The playlist is really great but I'll be damned if I can pick a fav.

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Saturday, 10 September 2016 11:02 (nine years ago)

One of these:

Third Wave - Waves Lament
Wendy & Bonnie - I Realized You
Roger Nichols & the Small Circle of Friends - Snow Queen
Paul Williams - Someday Man
The Byrds - Here Without You
The Millennium - It's You

Several others here I'd vote for if the band were represented by a different song

Lots of clever sequencing here! i.e. Roger Nichols --> Paul Williams

Never To Be Forgotten. One of my favorite songs ever.

This may be a tad more sunshine-pop or less ethereal than most of these, but still blends in nicely:

I was just listening to Dying For Bad Music's latest mix and around the 11 minute mark there was this song "Who's Gonna Hold the Wind" by Dane Sturgeon that would fit nicely in this playlist.
