Feel free to chime in on any of his albums, but I'd love to know what others think of his solo work.

Probably another Canuck only thread (if anyone answers it at all).

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 November 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think that his first album, Crawl With Me, was the bestest...produced by John Cale, a lot of great songs like "My Empty House" and "Our Little Secret", but more recently I've decided that the production on the album is a bit too sterile. I think that Sexual Roulette is now my favourite, mostly because it's a great collection of songs, but also because "Bound For Vegas" is such an amazing fuck-you type of song. The self-titled album is pretty good too...haven't really heard much of the stuff since then, unfortunately.

Still, his best song is "Hawaii". I dare anyone to prove me wrong.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

If I could I would prove "I Hate Music" was better by science, maybe even "Guns and Heroin" or "Data Redux" but they are all good.

I say all this listening to What Fresh Hell Is This in awe at how mind blowing the first 5 songs (Beatles In Hollywood - Guns and Heroin) are and how the rest of it just pales in comparison. The only other solo album I've heard from him was pretty stale (Vultura Freeway).

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Was he in a band before?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:30 (twenty-three years ago)

He was in:
The K-Tels
The Young Canadians
Los Popularos
Poisoned

Of course, Poisoned morphed into his band on the solo albums, but they still released stuff before under that name.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess he's this semi-legendary figure I've often heard of, but rarely actually heard. I think Hawaii is the only one of his songs I really know (a roommate used to play it at least once a week), that and there was one acoustic one I had for a while about being in the hospital or something?

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe one day we can get together and have a reeeeelappse!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

You're like an encyclopedia. You know that?

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty sad, I know.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably another Canuck only thread

You got that right. Although I guess I just disrupted that, d'oh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

*threatens Ned with a sharpened Bruce McCulloch CD*

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

there was one acoustic one I had for a while about being in the hospital or something?

from your hosptial bed,
to my padded cell

I got an electric version of that song on a promo but I don't know what album its on.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

my only exposure to him was in the brilliant 'hard core logo' film (a must-see for any music lover). most of the snippets of him in that made him look and sound a little stodgy, though 'hawaii' gets a good run during one scene and sounds inspired. i'd be keen to hear some of his recorded stuff but the chances of finding it here in australia are slim to zilch.

angelo (angelo), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, I had a dream last night in which Ned not only moved to Canada, he moved to my old town, out in the middle of nowhere, for no adequately explained reason. Perhaps it was my subconscious stranding him in rural prairie hell as revenge for his taunt upthread.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, angelo, Art was hilarious in one of Bruce McDonald's earlier movies, Highway 61, when he played a burnt out rock star living in a mansion in Memphis. If you can't get your hands on any albums by Art himself, try to find a place where you can rent that movie...it's great all around.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i like Kim's plan better. If we send Ned to the prarries who knows what kind of army he might raise.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no!!! Children of the Ned! Oh no!!!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Art Bergmann has real messy hair
If he were to die, no one would care.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Bet you Bruce McDonald would.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably would too. They're lines from a song about him that I wrote with my brother - I wrote the first line, my brother the second. He isn't wired up quite right.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

got that right. But was it the heroin or the BC Interior?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

These dreams and plans mentioned above disturb my soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

We will lay aside our plans if you can dig up old K-Tels/Young Canadian singles and eps from your campus radio station library.

We will infact sing your praises and possibly stop calling you a bastard in the future.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I think Art Bergmann is quite sane ('Hawaii' and his bit in 'Highway 61' notwithstanding). It's my brother who isn't wired up quite right.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned: don't listen to them! Brandon Manitoba is a great place! You could become friends with Ciggie-doo Don!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, Noodles, I found out where the hell I heard the Peter Parkers first, somebody in Canada traded me a mix disc with a bunch of bands on it for a couple of burns from my collection. Yay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

There may be some Art Bergmann on that mix disc too.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

JUST MAYBE. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats disappointing, I like the Stereolab story better, its much more random and there for hopeful that someone other then me will buy their cd when it comes out.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

We will infact sing your praises and possibly stop calling you a bastard in the future.

Whoah, whoah, hold ON a second - I know this thread is making us all a little over-excited up here, but geez Mr N., let's not start talking crazy.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I got carried away in the moment.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It's ok... let's just not let it happen again. I think we should all be focusing our concern on the fact that Sean is being tormented by Ned - EVEN IN HIS SLEEP! Ned, will your reign of bastardly terror never end?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone hear anything about Art lately? He seems to have dissapeared. How is his health? One always has to worry, given the life style.

jojo, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I will have to visit Toronto and make you watch the MST3K episode The Final Sacrifice, that great eighties horror film from Alberta! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Last I heard he was still drinking in Toronto but had quit the music making business. Sadly I can not verify.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird, Art's in Toronto? Hopefully he's okay. I know that he's recently released a couple of albums of older material...one of the early stuff he did as demos, and then another album of acoustic faves. Art, if you're out there, give us a sign!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

It wouldnt be the first time he has moved out here.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 7 November 2002 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

seventeen years pass...

Good to see Art hasn’t mellowed with age

Kim, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 20:12 (five years ago)

two months pass...

Who knew I’d get another reason to revive this thread.. https://exclaim.ca/music/article/art_bergmann_appointed_to_the_order_of_canada

Kim, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:22 (five years ago)

I attended a music-business seminar where a TV producer used Art as the worst person she'd had to work with in booking bands for a show. The best? The singer from Glass Tiger.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:42 (five years ago)
