Yes - Going For The One

Steve Howe ernie-ing in the intro: "one, two, a'one two three four" ... "ERNIE! ERNIE! ERNIE!"

or...

The Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking

Bobby Keys starts to ernie in the saxophone solo at around the 4:13 mark.

The Stranglers - Walk on By

Hugh Cornwell ernie-ing in the guitar solo at roughly the 3:58 mark.

I feel like this is a common enough riff that I ought to be able to rattle off ernies all day, and yet! I can only think of one other off the top o' the head:

Hahaha! That's an amazing one... thanks for that! Funnily enough, I'm having the same problem as you are... it feels like there should be so many examples of this, but it's kinda hard to think of 'em!

I think "Going for the One" is a little different from the Stones, Stranglers, and MC5 examples. I think those are basically cycling through a melodic pattern of sliding or hammering up a whole-tone and then playing a note that's a P4 higher than the first note, i.e. D-E-G or C-D-F. In the Yes example, I think he's sliding a whole inverted major chord up a whole tone but just stays there. Similar rhythm and feel though.

It is, but it's still an ernie!

was hoping someone versed in theory would show up in this thread! plus too Howe is playing a pedal steel on "Going for the One", making it a pedal-ernie.

early country would probably be a good place to listen for some ernies

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Monday, 26 September 2016 07:04 (nine years ago)

if I can find an ernie in an Ernest Tubb record y'all are going to hear all about it

However I think Julian Cope was the first to use this term? It's in Krautrocksampler anyway.

yes that's where i learned it

Oooh! I kind of assumed it was that by looking at the videos above. Had no idea it was a popular term thought it was some local joke. There are thousands of these but I can't think of anything at the moment.

every paul leary solo?

massaman gai, Monday, 26 September 2016 18:12 (nine years ago)

I didn't watch the Andy Partridge clip yet but I honestly Turrican made up this term. I was trying to figure it out from the examples (and still am, since I haven't watched the video or read the Cope book.) When I Google "guitar ernie", I see a bunch of results for Ernie Ball strings. When I type in "guitar solo ernie", I see a bunch of Ernie Isley clips.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Monday, 26 September 2016 19:00 (nine years ago)

I got the term from Partridge, I didn't realise Cope had also used it!

ernie arises periodically in live versions of 'freebird'

feel like the 'tuesday's gone' solo had its origins in ernie before some other things were added in

why: because I have lost control of my life

i think there's enough tasteful examples here. ernie is not necessarily bad. it's just ernie.

i feel like ernie shows up in some zz top songs but idk when.
