not had a chance to check in with this yet but Some Heavy Ocean ended up being a real keeper

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 09:42 (nine years ago)

Some Heavy Ocean remains among my favorite release from '14, and the new one is scratching the same itches, from Kristen Hersh to Hope Sandoval. I've tried to get into her main gig, Marriages, but they have yet to grip me in the same way. Arid California twang is a better setting than shoegazish indie, I guess.

Really love this album. Sorry to drop some dirty words, but one track reminded me of Tori Amos.

Ross, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

I'll go one further and say her voice reminds me of Heather Nova and even Dolores O'Riordan at points.

Its roughhewn, more reliant on the cracks in Emma's voice than the composition. But I didn't donate to PP this year, so...

so into this. i'm hearing echoes of tiny vipers, paramore, landa del rey, chelsea wolfe, etc. gonna have to check out her band marriages next cuz the last two albums ive gotten super into have been from members of the band: ERR and the drummer's solo record as drab majesty

just another (diamonddave85), Monday, 20 February 2017 20:58 (eight years ago)

damn how did I miss this, this is awesome

Evan R, Monday, 20 February 2017 21:05 (eight years ago)

Marriages are really good but a considerably different thing to her solo work.

My new mission for 2017-2018 is to evangelize everyone in Marriages so that they become omnipresent superstars.

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

I like her instrumental guitar improvisations -- I think the story is that she recorded them in a van on tour? I like them. I also like that her album cover photo is so gnarly looking when she is obviously extremely beautiful.

Self titled track on marked for death is some divine shit

kolakube (Ross), Friday, 2 February 2018 07:25 (seven years ago)

She played here in a fairly small room a couple of months back. Pretty good but all electric and you couldn’t really hear her voice so well, but after the show was over and most people had left some uber fan convinced her to play one more. She climbed back on the stage, strapped on her acoustic guitar and played ‘Big Sky’. We were in an upstairs room but it was so heavy I thought we were going to end up in the basement, such a gut-punch of a song.
