New album, available for streaming here/

There's some intense stuff here. After a couple of listens, I think it's at least as good as Animism, feels a little more raw. The "Rape Me" cover is actually pretty effective.

Really cool stuff. I especially like "Summoning".

This is interesting, a katajjaq duo + electroacoustic trio. They talk about throat-singing in between songs. I get the sense that what Tanya Tagaq does is a lot more aggressive than traditional throat-singing, which is partly a game of who can hold out the longest.

Definitely. Some ethnomusicologists prefer the term "vocal games" because, traditionally, these were not really thought of as songs or as an independent art form per se (at least as far as anything I've read goes). I'll watch the whole video you linked, jmm, but this is a nice little intro. (Nattiez/Beaudry/Charron wrote some classic articles on the subject; more info available if anyone is interested.)

I can't wait to see her next month. This is swiftly becoming one my favourite albums of the year.

Back to traditional throat-singing, the Ainu parallel vocal game Rekuhkara is amazing. They actually sing into each other's larynx.

found this video after reading more about rekuhkara (thanks for that!)

I saw her at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa last night, with the same ensemble listed here. It was pretty intense. I may have been a little more absorbed when I saw her last year but that probably has more to do with the venue/setting. It was great to see a whole choir using some of these techniques with her, sometimes calling back and forth with enthusiastic audience members! The version of "Rape Me" was more dynamic than the studio version. She and Duncan basically did free improv together for an encore.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Sunday, 27 November 2016 13:28 (eight years ago)

Hey, I was there too. It was wonderful. I'm so glad I got to see it. The calling from audience members was one of the coolest things and totally unexpected.

Did I hear it right that the choir was all local Inuit youth and that they had a day to practice? Unreal. I don't suppose she plays in many cities with sufficiently large Inuit populations (Ottawa's is the largest in Canada outside of the north.)

Audience member at @tagaq's Ottawa show yelling Inuktitut, "Tell me! Tell me more! You are strong! I love you!" Echoed by Inuit in room. WOW

Some interesting choices in her 12 favourite albums.

She is definitely one of the most inspiring people in Canada right now.

jmm, Saturday, 31 December 2016 16:59 (eight years ago)

I want to like her, but...I don't. Maybe making a Spotify playlist of all the songs without English-language lyrics will help.

The 60 Minutes piece was very well done, with any "lookit the weirdo making her weirdo noises" stuff confined to the intro. I'm still not a huge fan of the actual work, but I think it's great that she's achieved so much recognition and been able to draw attention to indigenous peoples' issues as a result of that.
