The single version of La Bionda - I Wanna Be Your Lover (but apparently not the album version)

Dee Dee Jackson - Automatic Lover (sounds like a spaceship anyway but might just be ~futuristic sounds~ more generally)

emil.y, Sunday, 23 October 2016 19:24 (eight years ago)

Sorry, that should be Dee D. Jackson.

emil.y, Sunday, 23 October 2016 19:26 (eight years ago)

Okay, not a spaceship talking off, but the actual sound of the first US spacewalk: Lemon Jelly- Spacewalk.

Great work so far. Thanks, everybody!

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:17 (eight years ago)

I guess that's a spaceship at the start of Prism's "Spaceship Superstar." A bit subdued.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:39 (eight years ago)

There must be songs by Stereolab that have this. Also Acid Mothers Temple, although maybe every song of theirs has this sound, which is the best one to pick.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:48 (eight years ago)

I'm sure there's at least one Be-Bop Deluxe song that does this but I can't bring it to mind. there is a sound effect at the beginning of their Live! In The Air Age album which I think is supposed to be a spaceship

- SOLO - Pink Dolphin, Bubbling Cassina (frog), Indris, Monkeys, Tiger (soref), Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:49 (eight years ago)

The sounds at the beginning of "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe are more like being passed by an already taken off spaceship.

Zachary Taylor, Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:49 (eight years ago)

Rush - Countdown. Maybe also Distant Early Warning?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 October 2016 21:20 (eight years ago)

does they might be giants - space suit count?

mystery local boy (rushomancy), Sunday, 23 October 2016 21:20 (eight years ago)

Came here to post Hatiras but snoball beat me to it.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 23 October 2016 22:29 (eight years ago)

“EXP” on “Axis: Bold as Love” by Jimi Hendrix a space craft taking of or landing- it is unknown if it was a rocket. Not to thread jack, nut what about songs that feature earthquakes?

24tracks, Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:00 (eight years ago)

Ash - Angel Interceptor

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:01 (eight years ago)

don't know if the spaceship during the intro of Frank Zappa's "Inca Roads" is taking off or landing

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:02 (eight years ago)

how about "international feel"?

mystery local boy (rushomancy), Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:18 (eight years ago)

'International Feel' was the first thing I thought of. Dunno exactly what's taking off at the beginning of that, but whatever it is, is more likely taking off from Area 51 than Heathrow.

Bloody Snail, Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:30 (eight years ago)

Ash - Angel Interceptor

Ah, I knew there was one from Ash, only I thought it might be "Girl From Mars" but no dice.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:30 (eight years ago)

"International Feel," "Inca Roads" and "Space Suit" by They Might Be Giants definitely. "Countdown" has a countdown but the sound effect at the beginning is more like an atmospheric aircraft than the audio that traditionally signifies spacecraft so debatable.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 23:53 (eight years ago)

Hendrix's "Exp," like "CTA-102" by The Byrds, features aliens and guitar effects to signify rocket takeoff which is not exactly the theremin-like bleeping usually utilized, but I guess we can accept.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 24 October 2016 00:05 (eight years ago)

couple of Joe Meek instrumentals:

Roger Lavern & The Microns - Moon Rocket
The Thunderbolts - March of the Spacemen

hippie lady from california who loves that god (unregistered), Monday, 24 October 2016 00:13 (eight years ago)

Actually "CTA-102" does have some sounds that are pretty close, albeit not at the beginning.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 24 October 2016 00:21 (eight years ago)

a bunch of tracks on Buffalo Bop's space age novelty pop compilation Rockin' Orbit begin with countdowns and liftoffs, like this one from 1952:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO11pzcVm2g

(clever how it transitions from standard whooshing sound effects to wonky pedal steel)

They're listed as two consecutive tracks on Jefferson Starship's 'Blows Against the Empire', but the first, 'X-M', is basically just one and a half minutes of noise that culminates in the sound of a starship taking off as it segues into 'Starship'.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2016 03:09 (eight years ago)

None of the songs begin with rocket sounds, but every song on Public Service Broadcasting's The Race for Space album is built on historical spaceflight samples.

Thanks! Which reminds me: if only ilx could bring to bear the same resources it used to locate Wayne to solve this unsolved mystery

Seems like there must be a bunch of Man or Astroman tracks that do this, but I'm blanking at the moment.

I also immediately thought of Man Or Astro-Man, and this song especially (although the actual sound of take-off is not featured here):

Eleven minute plus album version of "Float On" has some space age sounds to accompany you on your voyage to the stars, mixed with "Ring Around the Rosie" for good measure.

Under Heaviside Manners (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 15 July 2017 15:05 (eight years ago)

The B-52s "Planet Claire" begins with what I'd call satellite sounds.

The intro to ELO's "Tightrope" has a spaceship feel.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 15 July 2017 19:51 (eight years ago)

Takako Minekawa's "Rainy Song" has background bleeps and theremin sweeps throughout which gradually intensify until they become spaceship takeoff sounds.
