The Cost of Loving: Classic or Dud?

This morning I listened to this album by The Style Council and said to myself, "Peter, this is fantastic! That box set you've had for ages wasn't such a waste of money after all." The initial rush has worn off a bit, but I still think it's pretty good. Does anyone else like it? Should I investigate its influences? - someone called David Sea, and Anita Baker, to name but two. 80s undergound soul, whatever that is. If so, how do you start, where do you go, etc? I think Anita Baker was quite famous. There was an Anita Baker at our school. Anita Baker Fatty Acre, we called her.

Nothing like as good as Cafe Bleu, but not a bad album.

Am I really the only person in the world who thinks that The Style Council was the pinnacle of Paul Weller's career?

The fact that I assumed this was nowt to do with TSC indicates the importance of that album in my cultural cannon.

And I think TS are great but its Cafe Bleu or Confessions as best album.

Must check out Modernism again though - the boxes splitting albums across cds pisses me off no end

I'm more pissed off by the albums not being in the right order sometimes. I like Cafe Bleu best too. I had started ignoring them by the time TCOL came out, which is why it took me a long time to get round to listening to it properly. The white denim look had been usurped by Big Audio Dynamite in the Top of the Pops studio of my mind.
