i guess i'll be the first among many to point out that some of these songs are Actually Bad and Hated

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:09 (eight years ago)

though i think the only one i earnestly dislike is the richard ashcroft

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:11 (eight years ago)

i remember being so excited about that Richard Ashcroft album, was sad that it pretty much sucked.

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:12 (eight years ago)

There are some doozies here. Lame that the only representative from the great PJ Harvey album is the duet with Thom Yorke, not one of the better songs on that record.

2000 was not messing around. songs like Stan, Ms. Jackson and Idioteque mean serious business, but it's hard to top Letter From an Occupant.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:20 (eight years ago)

just listened to that Richard Ashcroft song again, as i pulled out the CD, it's like six minutes long and worse than i remember.

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:46 (eight years ago)

Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country

lots of great contenders from this year but this is arguably the best BoC song

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:48 (eight years ago)

Too Young by Phoenix and Come On Let's Go by Broadcast are two of my favourite songs ever. It's almost impossible to choose between them.

Overload, Pure Shores, Untitled, Since I Left You, B.O.B, Ante Up, Since I Left You, The Crystal Lake, Groovejet and Lovely Head are all classics too.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 3 November 2016 01:51 (eight years ago)

this is...not a bad list. my initial instinct is 'pure shores' but let's give it some thought

imago, Thursday, 3 November 2016 02:01 (eight years ago)

yeap, we need cryptosicko!

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 02:02 (eight years ago)

Voting for Broadcast. It may or may not be the best song on here, but when else do I get to vote for them?

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 3 November 2016 02:26 (eight years ago)

"stan"

k3vin k., Thursday, 3 November 2016 02:41 (eight years ago)

Pretty good list, Broadcast is the one that immediately jumps out at me.

D'Angelo, Outkast (both) and MOP are straight classics

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Thursday, 3 November 2016 02:58 (eight years ago)

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 03:49 (eight years ago)

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 03:52 (eight years ago)

Having to choose between Untitled and B.O.B. is going to destroy me.

Here I am!

Turns out Acclaimed Music already put together its own playlists for each year. Who knew?!

'One Armed Scissor'

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Thursday, 3 November 2016 12:40 (eight years ago)

Oh shit, yeah, One Armed Scissor kicks so much ass

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Thursday, 3 November 2016 13:14 (eight years ago)

Holy shit, I think this one may actually be impossible for me. There are at least 4 or 5 in this list that are all-time favorites. Tempted, though, to vote Broadcast because I love it and because it's likely to get lost in the thicket of top-notch options.

All-Night Burger Party (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 November 2016 13:30 (eight years ago)

Oh, but now I see that several other people have already called that one out.

'If I Ever Feel Better' is a song that sounded great upon first listen and that continues to grow in my esteem, so maybe that.

All-Night Burger Party (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 November 2016 13:31 (eight years ago)

Thanks cryptosicko.

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 November 2016 17:25 (eight years ago)

No ones mentioned One More Time yet? Not my favourite dp song but it's still a jam

pumped up kicks and levels on repeat all night (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 3 November 2016 18:19 (eight years ago)

this is...not a bad list. my initial instinct is 'pure shores' but let's give it some thought

A great, great song but I really wish I could vote for 'Black Coffee' instead.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 3 November 2016 18:50 (eight years ago)

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 3 November 2016 19:13 (eight years ago)

voted m.o.p. but

Daft Punk - One More Time
OutKast - Ms. Jackson
OutKast -B. O. B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)

Madonna - Music
Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better

the richard ashcroft one is good too

never want to hear "beautiful day" every again

brimstead, Thursday, 3 November 2016 19:21 (eight years ago)

Group X - "I Just Want Bang Bang Bang"

frogbs, Thursday, 3 November 2016 19:52 (eight years ago)

There are a lot of great songs on here. I once had a girl dedicate the song "This Mess We're In" to what was going on at the time, so it has to be that.

the future is now, Friday, 4 November 2016 14:14 (eight years ago)

voted pure shores

nxd, Friday, 4 November 2016 14:25 (eight years ago)

1. OutKast -B. O. B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)
2. OutKast - Ms. Jackson
3. The New Pornographers - Letter from an Occupant

IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE OUT IN THE COUNTRY

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Friday, 4 November 2016 15:47 (eight years ago)

great list, inspired some listening

could vote for plenty of these but going with All Saints - Pure Shores

niels, Friday, 4 November 2016 19:47 (eight years ago)

I voted for Pure Shores because I thought it would be underrated so the love in this thread is cheering, I wish that love translated into love for the new album they've put out which has a few moments in the same league.

Groovejet, Try Again, Lovely Head, Fuck The Pain Away and If I Ever Feel Better all worthy of runner-up.

boxedjoy, Friday, 4 November 2016 20:17 (eight years ago)

think the Orbit-production is a big part of what makes that song great - the ethereal melancholy electro vibe so turn of the century, also beautifully featured on the Ray of Light album, and ofc "Black Coffee" which is also stellar

niels, Friday, 4 November 2016 20:24 (eight years ago)

yeah an Orbit-goes-pop Greatest Hits compilation would be welcome, there's that great song he did with the Sugababes a few years later that fits in. The fake Orbit stuff on Red Flag is nice too though, I said it on another thread recently but I don't think All Saints ever released a single that was less than brilliant.

boxedjoy, Friday, 4 November 2016 20:51 (eight years ago)

Too Young/If I Ever Feel Better all time for me so one of those

Pure Shores and many others also up there mind

groovypanda, Friday, 4 November 2016 21:15 (eight years ago)

what an incredible year and i have never heard "Pure Shores" so i'm definitely looking forward to it. i am listening to the Spotify playlist and up to Moloko.

M.O.P. every time

electric wight dorkestra (crüt), Saturday, 5 November 2016 02:24 (eight years ago)

voted Lovely Head, loads of good weird pop on here though

Ah, this was that very brief moment when Queens of the Stone Age were a hype.

I thought almost the same when I read over the list, except replace Queens of the Stone Age with The Avalanches.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Sunday, 6 November 2016 18:57 (eight years ago)

both better than The New Pornographers and Grandaddy, so long as we're being catty

brimstead, Sunday, 6 November 2016 20:45 (eight years ago)

And all of them are better than Coldplay, but perhaps they're just too easy of a target

pumped up kicks and levels on repeat all night (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:02 (eight years ago)

I heard a new Coldplay song today for the first time in forever (the one about being so high, and also drunk and high) and I was shocked at how terrible it was. I knew they were bad but I hadn't really checked in on them in a long time. It's weird that there was a time when people would unironically like Coldplay

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:06 (eight years ago)

Madonna's Music, arguably her last great single.

skip, Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:12 (eight years ago)

Coldplay basically snared the Radiohead fans that were scared off by Kid A.

Music didn't impress me as much as Ray of Light did.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:24 (eight years ago)

"Music" is pretty much played out for me at this point, but "Don't Tell Me" and "What It Feels Like For a Girl" would have been in contention for me if they'd made the list.

I'd assume that "Hung Up" is probably the most recent single that casual fans could name, and that was over a decade ago now!

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:28 (eight years ago)

Yeah, 'Hung Up' was a huge hit and definitely the last of the "songs everyone knows" hits. I didn't really think much of it, to be honest - sampling ABBA struck me as one of the laziest things she possibly could have done.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:34 (eight years ago)

A lot of really good tunes here, but quite an odd choice from that PJ Harvey album.

Ireland's Industry (that is what we are) (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:42 (eight years ago)

i don't remember anything about "Hung Up"

electric wight dorkestra (crüt), Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:50 (eight years ago)

hung up was a banger, laziness not relevant when criticizing a record

is that "i will follow you" song (the one on the smart phone balloon commercial) by coldplay? holy shit is that a horrible song.

brimstead, Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:53 (eight years ago)

'Hung Up' was a banger in the same way as a 1982 Skoda 105 was a banger.

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Sunday, 6 November 2016 23:03 (eight years ago)

Bee OK, Monday, 7 November 2016 18:40 (eight years ago)

One vote here for Cripple And The Starfish. My introduction to an wonderful and unique voice.

kraudive, Monday, 7 November 2016 19:09 (eight years ago)

i don't remember anything about "Hung Up"

that was the ABBA one that sounded a little like a rejected Gwen Stefani single

Woo, go Broadcast.

Any one of ten songs deserved this, great year for singles.

Hooray for Broadcast. I'm glad I ended up giving them my vote. They could well be my favourite band of the 00s.

Didn't they just win another poll like this recently?

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 01:57 (eight years ago)

Just found it. Black Cat won Moka's best songs of 2005 poll a couple of weeks ago. Great stuff.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 02:01 (eight years ago)

Didn't expect "Independent Women" to strike out.
