All that stompy handclappy alternative radio shit. Of Monsters and Men. Imagine Dragons. This godawful fucking thing:

What is this crap and why is it so prevalent? It all seems explicitly crafted to appeal to people with beards who drink microbrews and camp.

Set fire to all of it.

(Except I kind of like "Home," and don't really consider it hard offender, so whatever.)

i have a beard, drink microbrews and occasionally camp, but this stuff is the fucking worst. i think where I live (Colorado) is the center of it all.
― tylerw, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:17 (eight years ago)
It has painfully long legs, though Milford going big rock on their last record was a pretty big signal that it's trending down.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:17 (eight years ago)
"i thought this aesthetic had been on its way out."
you would think so, yet, turn on the radio and there it is, again
― akm, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:18 (eight years ago)
"(Except I kind of like "Home," and don't really consider it hard offender, so whatever.)"
you are wrong
― akm, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:21 (eight years ago)
ha yeah, that song makes me want to throw up
― tylerw, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:22 (eight years ago)
I ain't gonna go to the mat for it, but I don't not enjoy it when I hear it.
Now ask me about The Lumineers and Mumford (which I called Milford 4x posts ago, because wgaf what their name is).
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:25 (eight years ago)
feel like this music is for the same demographic that liked, say, Dropkick Murphys and 3rd wave ska bands in the 90s.

did anybody add "It all seems explicitly crafted to appeal to people with beards who drink microbrews and camp." to the effete liberal munching thread?

More of a nose ring, pulled-pork benny crowd I think.

Non-Australians presumably have not had to endure the eternal omnipresence of Vance Joy tho:

vance joy torments us in the US with his ukelele all the time on commercial radio. does he also stomp his foot? I'm sure he does. fucker
― akm, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 05:16 (eight years ago)
There's a show on the ABC here (basically our BBC) all about obscure Australian country towns which uses "Fire and the Flood" as the credits music, and I can't think of a more comprehensive example of "city people romanticizing a myth of rural life".
― Tim F, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 06:09 (eight years ago)
yeah, vance joy is 100% a part of this on american radio, ime.http://www.billboard.com/artist/5824666/vance-joy/chart?f=377

Other than Mumford and Sons, I think the UK only weathered minor gales when this was a big thing, and now it's been more-or-less relegated to twee TV adverts and Radio X

Not that we don't have our own monstrosities to deal with...
Ha, I was teaching guitar lessons to teenagers between 2013 and 2015 so developed a higher tolerance for this stuff than most ilxors. (I don't really associate either this kind of music or Lamb of God with microbrew-drinking campers. I mostly associate this music with middle-class teenagers, esp girls. I mostly associate Lamb of God with like music students in less-fashionable cities? And also my drunken neighbours in Windsor.) I will defend "Riptide" and "Hey Ho" as decent classicist pop-rock singles and have a soft spot for "Home" bc Community.
― Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 12:09 (eight years ago)
Bon Iver/FJM/My Morning Jacket are the slightly hipper versions of this stuff and would be listened to by your latte-sipping, microbrew, etc
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 12:11 (eight years ago)
Oh yeah, Bon Iver is for latte sippers.

Ok, lol. I didn't realize that there was actually a song called Hey Ho in this movement.
― how's life, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 14:54 (eight years ago)
yeah i have a beard and drink microbrews and go camping and i certainly can't reconcile the phoniness of this stuff with the realness of nature and can't imagine other ppl doing so either. it's more of a suburban thing I'd guess
