Phish & DMB, what else do all the pot smokers like?
And would you be caught enjoying this music?

i'm rather fond of the japanese neo-hippy-crazy-psychedelic-jam-band-drum-circle bands like the boredoms and rovo and acid mothers temple and (oh the list just keeps on going)

medeski martin and wood, critters buggin, the slip, that type
MMW is pretty good, but i'm not sure if they really have the chops to be truly jazzy. i saw les claypool's frog brigade (yeah, yeah ...) and thought it was basically wankery

Critters Buggin, Frog Brigade, Garage-a-Trois, anything with Skerik playing in it definitely floats my boat. That man is a monster.

MMW, not the chops to be truly jazzy? Have you ever seen one of their acoustic shows? I'm guessing not, but I could be wrong. Anyway, they're definitely at the top of my list of improvisational musicians, jam or jazz or whatever you wanna call it.

I also particularly enjoy the ever-shifting-lineup of Project Logic, as well as anything Bernie Worrell participates in, be it the Woo Warriors or the Bucket of Bernie Brains project. Robert Randolph's band is spectacular and soulful, definitely one of my favorites. Anytime Bela Fleck jams with anyone, it turns golden, too. Every time I see Leftover Salmon I expect it to suck, and they always put on a helluva show.

BTW, I hate Phish and Dave Matthews Band, as well as Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead. While Phish was at one point very good in concert, in their later years they got quite stale and repetetive. DMB, Alman Bros., and Grateful Dead were some of the most lifeless and dull concerts I've ever been to. They Might Be Giants put on a better show.

Someone destroy the String Cheese Incident. Please.

Ben Harper is about as hippy as I'm willing to get.

"Someone destroy the String Cheese Incident. Please."

ha ha ha! Yeah, and don't forget about Black Banana Deepthroat while you're at it!

Oh yeah, and though they're not usually called a "jam band", Dirty Dozen Brass Band certainly does JAM.

Destroy: Phish concert bootlegs so i don't have to listen to another single one cause it won't change my opinion of the band, Smoked/Baked/Fired Slamon, String Cheese Incident and "roots" music such as newgrass.

true, i have never seen them live. i dunno, maybe i'm just a stodgy classicist, but somehow MMW never does it for me despite their great group chemistry(cop out, i know). that "bemsha swing/lively up yourself" medley encapsulates what i don't like about them. although "a go go" is fucking fun as hell to listen to.
i was pretty disappointed by skerik when i saw the frog brigade, cos i'd heard how great he was but he never really cut loose, just kinda doubled lines and made noise. but i think i'm biased against this whole not-quite-jazz-not-quite-rock-not-quite-funk jam band aesthetic.

"i was pretty disappointed by skerik when i saw the frog brigade, cos i'd heard how great he was but he never really cut loose..."

Yeah, I think he's kinda held back by their just-extend-Les's-songs format a little, but the stuff he does with Critters Buggin is out-of-this-world!

And, in regards to MMW, as a "stodgy classicist", you might like their albums Notes from the Underground and Tonic better, as these explore their bebop leanings in way more detail, and are both entirely acoustic records...and are also great, IMHO.

Please destroy Pork Tornado. Also Dark Star Orchestra--how do you get to be so famous being a cover band, anyway? Phish all sounds like the same song when you are forced to listen to one of their rabid cult member's bootleg collections, especially when you live with two of them--
