refusing to vote for anything with the word "Beatles" in it makes this pretty easy

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:15 (eight years ago)

my dilemma is that while the drakeless bits of "work" are better than "black beatles" (and most other pop in 2016) the drakey bits of work are worse than most other pop in 2016

lex pretend, Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:18 (eight years ago)

i don't have the gene that makes other people's ears get upset with Drake so he doesn't even ruin "Work" for me, he's just the less-brilliant bit of it

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:20 (eight years ago)

"i spilled all my emotions tonight" is so punchable

a friend of mine did say that "if i had a twin i would still choose you" is such an abyss of terrible that it is actually quite realistic, in the sense of something a straight man would actually say to her

lex pretend, Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:22 (eight years ago)

this whole list is so much better than the number 1s, ridiculously so

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:23 (eight years ago)

they're still horrid twats but I came around to Black Beatles a bit recently. before voting for Rihanna I'll have to hear a few more of these (a few I've already encountered on the traxpoll nominations shuffle) but it seems unlikely she'll be beaten

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:34 (eight years ago)

I heard 'Starboy' again yesterday and didn't hate it, so I voted for that. 'Work' is another pointless Drake performance that makes me wish someone would superglue his mouth shut, and the "work work work work work work" bit is lazy lazy Rihanna.

let it go let it go let it go (snoball), Saturday, 31 December 2016 10:37 (eight years ago)

Oh come on that is so clearly the enduring pop hook of 2016 and its sense of casual spontaneity is the big reason for that.

Gonna sling a vote to Work From Home anyway.

Matt DC, Saturday, 31 December 2016 11:47 (eight years ago)

shout out zara larsson for interpolating sasha's "dat sexy body" albeit hamfistedly (odd that it's her highest-charting single of the year - would've unhesitatingly voted for any of her other ones)

lex pretend, Saturday, 31 December 2016 14:01 (eight years ago)

Work wins this for me by being the catchiest even in spite of Drakes car air freshener presence.

Justin > Zara > the rest

Impressive how the no. 2s are miles better than the no. 1s. There's a couple of songs I love in here and none I actively hate.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Friday, 6 January 2017 00:51 (eight years ago)

"work from home" and "cheap thrills" are both solid if vacuous jams i enjoyed that totally could have been hits 8 or 9 years ago

k3vin k., Friday, 6 January 2017 01:25 (eight years ago)

They were pretty big in mexico according to spotify. Top 20 hits in 2016. Only Rihanna, Drake are the english hits besides those on the top 20z

dance cum rituals (Moka), Friday, 6 January 2017 03:19 (eight years ago)

plenty of ghastly songs here - "human", the wretched covers of "fast car" and "dancing on my own", daya and her dreadful whine. Voted "Work" though which nudges out Rae Sremm and Fifth Harmony.

monotony, Friday, 6 January 2017 04:05 (eight years ago)

i can't believe "i would like" was a bigger hit than "lush life" lmao

monotony, Friday, 6 January 2017 04:05 (eight years ago)

chart placing isn't really indicative of how big a hit is, right? i mean that's why this year's #1s and #2s polls are so purgatorial even though pop in 2016 is not, as the elderly '80s nostalgists would have it, actually that bad

lex pretend, Friday, 6 January 2017 11:25 (eight years ago)

def feel like "work from home" is worthy of being thrown a bone but ultimately it's just solid rather than great. "big bad wolf", the japan-only bonus track off their album that's apparently been scrubbed off the internet, was my fifth harmony keeper of the year

lex pretend, Friday, 6 January 2017 11:27 (eight years ago)

entirely wrong criteria but 'work from home' the only one i can stand to ever hear again so that

r|t|c, Friday, 6 January 2017 13:04 (eight years ago)

I work for a commercial UK radio station which plays appx half of these about 6 times a day each. If I have to hear Cheap Thrills again, I'll scream. I quite like the Kungs song but I've been exposed to it so much now it barely registers as music. So Black Beatles it is again.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Friday, 6 January 2017 13:12 (eight years ago)

Never understood why people say 'Work' is 'lazy'.. the delivery/repetition is the best bit! It's what makes it remarkable.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Friday, 6 January 2017 13:14 (eight years ago)

I have a love hate relationship with Work. I love that beat for the first 20 seconds then the whole thing gets as tedious as actual work.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Friday, 6 January 2017 17:41 (eight years ago)

I've been exposed to 'Work' so many times while at, erm, work, that I'm starting to put it in the same category as 'Livin' La Vida Loca' and 'Mambo Number 5'.

2017, how bad could it be? (snoball), Friday, 6 January 2017 18:17 (eight years ago)

there's something so 2009 about "work from home" -- it could be an electrik red b-side or something.
