*"Starboy" has since hit #1, but I'm including it because as of the last chart week of 2016, it had only reached #2 and that's always been the standard.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
The Weeknd f/ Daft Punk, "Starboy"* 26
Major Lazer f/ Justin Bieber and MØ, "Cold Water" 5
Twenty One Pilots, "Heathens" 5
Twenty One Pilots, "Stressed Out" 4
Lukas Graham, "7 Years" 1

I have no idea what the actual fuck a Twenty One Pilots is but I did some gif research and I am thankful for the artists who valiantly kept them out of #1.

I'm voting for The Weeknd for lack of better options.

So weird that Let Me Love You is not on either poll

I don't follow the charts closely, but I don't understand how only 5 songs hit #2 this year. They averaged 10 weeks at #2, each, without ever climbing to #1?

Karl Malone, Friday, 6 January 2017 06:19 (eight years ago)

I think other songs that were at No. 2 ended up climbing to No. 1 and got covered in the other poll

U2 (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 6 January 2017 06:36 (eight years ago)

Yes.

yikes is right

Twenty One Pilots deserve some kind of medal for recording both of my absolute least favorite radio songs of 2016, and getting both of them to #2. "7 Years" is also awful self-serious inanity, and "Cold Water" is just forgettable and generic so that doesn't leave us much choice here. Given the grand lineage of great, indelible songs making it to #2, "Starboy" is pretty pathetic but at least it's catchy and gives you a little Daft Punk fix.

I like Starboy

Heathens really isnt that bad but all other 21 pilots songs ive heard are literal trash

Spottie, Friday, 6 January 2017 18:53 (eight years ago)

my fav 21 pilots song is "tear in my heart" which of course wasn't nearly as successful as all of their other garbage

generally the vibe that 21 pilots give me is tricky featuring ed kowalczyk

hah

Spottie, Friday, 6 January 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

"Stressed Out" but would have voted "Tear in my Heart" if it were on here

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 6 January 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

i may have said this elsewhere but 21 pilots feels like a band from 1998 who was sent to 2016 to torture me with memories of the beginning of the end of alt rock radio.

yeah that's why Brad's analogy is otm

When my niece's godfather said his son loved Twenty-One Pilots and has seen them twice in concert, I considered how fast I'd have to drive my car into their home in the hope of taking everyone's life.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 January 2017 19:53 (eight years ago)

you guys are nuts, 21 pilots have a lightness that kowalcyk and his soundalikes utterly lacked

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 6 January 2017 20:28 (eight years ago)

Listening to Heathens now: omg hahahahah

I like how the "please dont make sany sudden moves" tries to preempt the listener from changing the radio station

U2 (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 6 January 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)

haha

Spottie, Friday, 6 January 2017 21:41 (eight years ago)

starboy is fine, never heard/heard of the rest

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 January 2017 23:25 (eight years ago)

i don't get the kowalcyk thing at all. they would have been huge with the sublime and rap metal crowd, they totally could have done an early slot at family values.

I might have voted for Ride over Statboy if it had made it to 2. I just realized what song that was, and I do kinda like it

sorry i was making a comparison to a reggae-esque song sung by a rapper and an extremely earnest dude, both modes which 21 pilots dude seems to embody

sublime and nu-metal is not wrong but they also recall a particular 2000-era desperation is all

Wow, not a good look for Tricky. From Angels With Dirty Faces to that, what a fall.

starboy took a while to grow on me but i bump it now. the verses are more hooky than a lot of stuff on the radio.

i'm voting cold water tho. top 10 track of the year to me full stop. pretty straightforward sentiment but one that i love anyway, really works w/ beiber's verse too and tho the flip for mo's verse ("i need to know you won't let go") is obvious from the get go it's still effective. i think drops in EDM/trop house tracks are sort of like a sickness, some catch you and some don't and it almost feels like it happens at random to a diff sub-group of people for every song, but the cold water drop was really cathartic to me all year.

i didn't mind "7 years" on some train/the fray shit but the lyrical conceit kind of wears you out even on the first run

"stressed out" is prob a generational nadir of pop for me, something about hanging what's supposed to be an angsty song on the phrase "now we're stressed out" felt really lazy to me and made me want to hate millennials

"heathens" is pretty tuneless i think. the 21 pilots song that is the reggae one is kind of acceptable but otherwise i find them generally intolerable.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 8 January 2017 02:03 (eight years ago)

the reggae one has the iiiiiEEEiiiiEEEiiiiiii OOOOWEEEOOOWEEEOOO OOO thing and i want to murder the guy when i hear it
