the one good thing about being in boston with no soulseek is that i've bought some great albums that i'd never have got round to hearing otherwise; for example cupid & psyche 85 and lexicon of love. what else should i be looking out for? (yeah this is a broad q but my 80s knowledge, for example, is next to zero). i'm currently hunting a-ha's "hunting high and low" and the human league's "dare", but i'm sure there are a million other great albums i couldget on the cheap...

Dig Me Out by Sleater-Kinney

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a copy of Peloton in the Brum M&VE for £4, getting cheaper all the time. It justs gives me heartache seeing it there, going down by a pound week on week... if anyone stops by the place, would they mind awfully buying it? I'd do it meself, but I've already got a copy...

Jeff W, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

lou reed: metal machine music (you may get it on vinyl and do go for that since its very dense).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cheaply" was, I think, the important term here. Everytime I see MMM, it's going for upwards of $20.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

and i have MMM already obv!

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I was in Boston recently and it was great for cheap vinyl - beat the pants off NYC which was 3 or 4 times the price.

tigerclawskank, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Fleetwood Mac: "Tusk" and "Then Play On," which have only a rhythm section (and a great one) in common. I'm absolutely serious about this.

Douglas, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything from Flat Duo Jets

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Right on, Douglas. Everyone should own at least Tusk -- if not the whole album, even the 45.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

AR Kane-"69"
Orange Juice-"You can't hide your love forever"

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

so,,, if you buy a cheap copy of Metal Machine Music on vinyl, and it's all scratched and wrecked,,,,,,,, does it sound any worse?

JasonD, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

NB - Tusk the LP must be acquired on vinyl (for the complete version of "Sara"). Avoid the CD.

zebedee, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the 6ths first album. the Liquorice album on 4AD.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The major label Husker Du albums--Warehouse and Candy Apple Grey
Talking Heads stuff of all sorts
Stone Roses Second Coming (maybe not 'great' but it's a damn solid listen, and I see it all the time for sub-$4)
Also very cheap is the second Sugar album, File Under Easy Listening

I imagine you'll start seeing copies of Slanted & Enchanted now too, what with people buying the reissues. The same with all the recently reissued Rolling Stones albums.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 7 November 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I see the Subaqwa album everywhere for $1, and it's actually a really good guitarpop record.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 7 November 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

breeders last splash..always...anywhere

jack, Thursday, 7 November 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno if it's "great," but a personal favorite: Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen. In almost every cut-out bin I've seen.

estimate the percent chance that i break my foot off in your ass (Neanderthal), Saturday, 2 July 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

xxpost. "Show World" was a bad album, a flop and unfortunately was a career killer for Redd Kross. There's only one good track on it.

You can usually find R.E.M.'s second best post-1988 album (Monster) in the cheapest of bargain bins in the cheapest of used shops. I've seen it for as little as 50 cents.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

As mentioned in the first post you can always find 'Dare', which is the first record that came into my mind, but look just a tiny bit harder and you'll be able to find 'Love and Dancing' too.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Is that on CD?

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Most of the The The back catalogue (in my experience)

sam500, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure, but if you're being picky, almost every 2nd hand CD store has a vinyl section.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

-xpost-

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

Not being picky (not as such), I have the LP in the garage somewhere, a thrift store purchase, never got to playing it (yet)

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)
