it's an organic whole, maaaaan
you don't want to miss a lame weir or lesh joke, do you?

tylerw, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)

Is there a bad Lesh joke compilation like the Paul Stanley banter one?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:38 (eight years ago)

weir's kinda more the "funnyman," lesh is the supplier of non sequiturs

does tuning include shambling renditions of Funiculi Funicula?

how's life, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:40 (eight years ago)

Wow. This short comp is dire. So many poorly told bad jokes.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:47 (eight years ago)

it's an organic whole, maaaaan!

tylerw, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

delete the tuning as well as all the bob tracks

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 17:02 (eight years ago)

Tended to get rid of at least the drums parts when sticking things on disc, not sure about tunings. Probably did that too.
Also skipped a lot of Love Lights but am getting to hear them now.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)

tuning is the prelude to rock

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 17:31 (eight years ago)

delete the tuning as well as all the bob tracks

unfair! Cassidy is great, so is "jack straw" as long as you say "HMM HMM HMMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMMMMMMMM, HMMMM" over the opening couplet, and I'll ride for "Mexicali Blues"

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 23:23 (eight years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:01 (eight years ago)

yeah i don't actually hate bobby, and cassidy is a jam. i'm just using this as a shorthand for the unrepresented "yeah you have fun listening to every note they ever recorded and boil it down to maybe an hour, and i'll listen to that" approach to the dead.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 2 February 2017 02:18 (eight years ago)

dude..

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 February 2017 05:15 (eight years ago)

if i want to listen to "el paso" i'll just put on the marty robbins version.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 2 February 2017 12:58 (eight years ago)

Ditto with "mama tried " / Merle

Bob Weirdo was just there to give Jerry a little break

calstars, Thursday, 2 February 2017 13:56 (eight years ago)

Except Jerry often played really well on Bob's songs (eg Playing with the Band)

Bongo Herbert (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 2 February 2017 14:25 (eight years ago)

HMM HMM HMMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMMMMMMMM, HMMMM

otm

marcos, Thursday, 2 February 2017 14:28 (eight years ago)

i'll probably only listen to "tuning" once or twice but i would never, ever delete

marcos, Thursday, 2 February 2017 14:29 (eight years ago)

thought this was gonna be a poll about alternate tunings and I'm very disappointed that it was not

bernard snowy, Thursday, 2 February 2017 14:49 (eight years ago)

Ward yes. I meant from singing

calstars, Thursday, 2 February 2017 15:26 (eight years ago)

Can't think of a GD song in an alternate tuning...

calstars, Thursday, 2 February 2017 15:27 (eight years ago)

unfair! Cassidy is great, so is "jack straw" as long as you say "HMM HMM HMMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMMMMMMMM, HMMMM" over the opening couplet, and I'll ride for "Mexicali Blues"

see also and like turning it down when Donna starts wailing WOOOOAH OOH OOOH OOOH OOH YEAH after the Playing in the Band jam

a (waterface), Thursday, 2 February 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)

lol yes

dude cmon... "Jack Straw" is a forever banger

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:08 (eight years ago)

Hurts my ears to listen to any Jack Straw bashing, Shannon

tylerw, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:10 (eight years ago)

jack straw is one of the best GD tunes

marcos, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

when the first warm day of spring comes i put on jack straw and then i know it will be summer again soon

marcos, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

I always save it for July 4th.

how's life, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:41 (eight years ago)

it's a great song save for the first creepy couplet

a (waterface), Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:48 (eight years ago)

what you don't like hippie "oh, my old lady won't mind" sexism?

marcos, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

really it's the wine (and the way it's sung) that gets me

(and equating women with wine)

but whatever it's a fucking ace song and i love it.

a (waterface), Thursday, 2 February 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)

I posted this in another DeadThread, but I always heard those lines of "Jack Straw" as being spoken by the moochiest of the moochy Deadheads. Robert Hunter basically did a character study of the sketchy hangers-on that started to affix themselves to the Dead. "You [the fans, appreciative and dirtbag alike] keep us [the Dead, getting stressed about being dragged around by their audience] on the run."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 2 February 2017 23:34 (eight years ago)

I'd say definitely you can skip a Chuck Berry cover if Weir is singing it and if he is playing slide, it is kinda hard to learn to do something like that in public. It seems in the mid-70s they did Chuck's "Around and Round" a whole lot and it's just usually slow and non-formative in the boogie dept.

earlnash, Thursday, 2 February 2017 23:52 (eight years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:01 (eight years ago)

also skip Weirdo's hoarse, tuneless vocal improvisations towards the end of most of his songs
but I digress

calstars, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:44 (eight years ago)

Yeah, it surely looks like rain.
Woo, it looks like rain and it feels like rain oh lawd
The rain is gonna come
The rain is gonna come
Rainy rain

how's life, Friday, 3 February 2017 01:10 (eight years ago)

2 toked 2 tune

calstars, Friday, 3 February 2017 01:32 (eight years ago)

I love the hell out of Jack Straw but the opening couplet is the "Tuning" of Jack Straw

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 3 February 2017 03:06 (eight years ago)

Can't think of a GD song in an alternate tuning...

exactly why this casual non-fan was so surprised and intrigued, haha

bernard snowy, Friday, 3 February 2017 13:29 (eight years ago)

smdh at everybody itt who thinks Bob Weir is singing in the first person about porkin' hippie chicks.

how's life, Friday, 3 February 2017 14:24 (eight years ago)

well technically he is singing in the first person, first person plural specifically, he's not saying "you can share the women, you can share the wine"

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 4 February 2017 14:41 (eight years ago)

Right. Yes. Sorry. But the narrator isn't Bob Weir enjoining the audience to share the women and the wine with him. It's Jack talking to Shannon.

how's life, Saturday, 4 February 2017 15:24 (eight years ago)

So does Jerry play the role of Shannon?

calstars, Saturday, 4 February 2017 18:41 (eight years ago)

I think that's how the song works...
