So far I know Dave Grohl, Beck, Dave Pirner, Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn, and Rhett Miller. Also heard rumors of Jeff Tweedy. Can anyone confirm? Any additional exes? Musicians only please.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

No Jeff Tweedy. Winona was after him though.

Others: Jack White, Julian Casablancas.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm. Didn't know about Grohl and Yorn. Lord, that lady gets around.

Hasn't she always harbored a desire for Paul Westerberg of the `Placemats? (hence her rumored insistence on the high school in "Heathers" being named Westerberg High). Did she ever get him in her clutches?

Shun Winona!

Okay, I admit it: we had a thing.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

id hit it.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 7 November 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Bright Eyes... wow, she must have really low standards.

Jimbo Jones, Thursday, 7 November 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Rumor (which I just made up) has it she's bi, and will soon hook up with Ari Up of the Slits. Seems they share a common interest ("we pay fuck all!").

"Winona Ryder? -- GOIN'INSIDE HER!"
- "Cock Mobster" by MC Paul Barman

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 November 2002 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Paul do that song live awhile back and it was the funniest fucking minute and a half I've seen performed in a loooooooong time! "I wanna kiss the hairy star of Terry Gar"... oh man. I HAVE to get that album soon.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 November 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

funny winona story:

troubador 1995 maybe? my best friend's younger sister goes to the troubador to check out golden smog (y'all-ternative supergroup comprised of members of wilco, jayhawks, soul asylum) and wouldn't you know, winona's hanging in the fray with the rest of the audience.

shortly before the headliner she ends up standing next to my friend's sister...

friend's sister: [takes notice] "excuse me, is your name winona rydNer?"
(she's not the most celebrity-aware person on the planet?)
winona: [snottily] "NO!"
(i mean, technically her name is Winona Horowitz)

hmmm... maybe that's not so funny.

"Hasn't she always harbored a desire for Paul Westerberg of the `Placemats? (hence her rumored insistence on the high school in "Heathers" being named Westerberg High). Did she ever get him in her clutches?"

isn't it obvious that that obsession is exactly why she's settled for Dave Pirner, Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller, etc?

on the Posies list someone quoted a really really funny, crude joke about Winona's groupie career that Ken made onstage once, but damned if i can remember it...

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 7 November 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I'd previously heard rumors about Winona going both ways (and that this had something to do with her grievance against Gwyneth Paltrow over Shakespeare in Love). But there seem to be no reports of Winona going after any female musicians.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 7 November 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the deal with Matthew Sweet and his little ode to try to win her love? You'd think with her rock star jones she'd have gone for it, but I'm not seeing his name appearing above. What's the deal? He must feel very sad if she turned him down, what with that other list up there.

Now I wait for the obligatory love paean to her by some snotty young whelps where they sing about her stealing their hearts, ho ho.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 7 November 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(The sad thing is that I used to have a huge crush on her too, around the time of Heathers, and it pains me to think that my last post up there, complete with crummy joke, has just ruined my chances of ever hooking up with her, no matter how big a rawk star I become. *sob*)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 7 November 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a Northampton Mass. joke-rock type band called Humbert Humbert with a song called "Winona Wescott" about the lead singer's wish that she marry him. Fits in with the MSweet thing.

wl (wl), Thursday, 7 November 2002 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame she never hooked up with anyone from Unrest though.

She was with Westerberg and has basically stalked him ever since. When he did an instore at Amoeba Records in LA this year, he called ahead and specifically asked that she be kept away from him.

Why are we leaving Johnny Depp off this list? Doesn't he have a band? Or do I get every actor's band confused with Dogstar?

Evan Dando is stuck in my head for some reason. did they or didn't they?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 7 November 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Matthew Sweet's tune is about Wynona Judd, not Ryder (hence the "y" instead of the "i").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

She banged me when I told her I did experimental drone music as an expression of my intense spirituality, but then the bitch stole my wallet!

Clarke B., Thursday, 7 November 2002 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure Sweet's song is "Winona," actually. She's possibly had more songs written about her than any other movie star I can think of. I did an mp3 search once and found about six.

Isn't dating Winona just about the only reason to want to be a rock star anymore? ("You're nobody in music till you've had a feud with me or slept with Winona." - Courtney Love)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 7 November 2002 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Les Claypool. Hence "Winona's Big Brown Beaver."

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 7 November 2002 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, I haven't followed anything on this thread since Alex quoting a rap lyric.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, can't find any documentation on the Paul Westerburg affair, but what the hell. Any more?

Here's my good Winona story:
Rock Star X was playing a gig around the same time/location as Rock Star Y and Industry Person Z thought it would be a good idea to introduce them to each other. Very awkward and short conversation ensues. Rock Star X takes Industry Person Z aside and says something along the lines of dude, I wouldn't hold it against you because you didn't know, but that's the guy Winona cheated on me with.

Ha!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I do listen to stuff other than Killing Joke and the Misfits from time to time.....oh yes it's true.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The idea of someone writing a song about Wynonna Judd is a bit creepy. Mind you, she IS a motorcycle mama, so maybe it could be Lemmy or something. That would be cool.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Rumor mill:

Winona and Shaun Ryder aren't really siblings, but a divorced couple.

Les Claypool of Primus wrote "Winona's Big Brown Beaver" as a desperate plea, a la "Layla", to steal her away from Shaun.

The Long Ryders were, um, aptly named.

briania, Friday, 8 November 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

So what about MITCH Ryder?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 8 November 2002 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard that she was also stepping out with Colin Devlin of the Devlins. A remarkably fragrant young man, it must be said. The Devlin's are a guilty pleasure of mine, after they played a few nights in a sort of cabaret act that I was involved in this summer in Dublin.

Conor (Conor), Friday, 8 November 2002 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I stopped bathing and she mistook me for John Spencer.

Actually, I just imagined her in a female prison movie and now I'm feeling all funny!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 November 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

She came to a gig of mine at Fez in NYC wearing a blonde wig. Perhaps it was Momus-repellent, she'd probably heard that I only perve brunettes.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 8 November 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

From an interview in the san fran chronicle with Paul Westerberg.

Q: Speaking of which, did Winona Ryder steal anything from you when you were seeing her?

A: Steal anything? My time.

Q: I guess that's worth more than $5,000 at Saks.

A: Yeah, I guess so.

Yeah, the Matthew Sweet song is "Winona" (with an "i"), and there is at least one interview somewhere in which he says he's referring to Ms. Ryder.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

A girl I use to date was in a wedding with Winona (both shared a high school best friend). Said she acted really put off during the rehersal dinner and acted like a queen bitch the whole weekend.

Not much of a story, but there you go.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am reminded that there's a John Wesley Harding song about once having slept with Catherine Zeta-Jones (funny, but alas fictional). He wanted to name it "For C-------- Z----J----," but his record company wouldn't let him.

Maybe he should rename it "For W----- R----." Because who'd be able to disprove it?

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

on the Posies list someone quoted a really really funny, crude joke about Winona's groupie career that Ken made onstage once, but damned if i can remember it...

Two and a half years too late, but I remember this! The turkey frank!

KEN: We've all been involved *transgenitally* in Hollywood for a
number of years, appearing on various movie soundtracks and
whatnot...and I got a little piece of inside information,
actually... I was, uh, I was talking to, uh, Johnny Depp, uh, a
few days ago and I said...I asked him, uh, y'know, uh, I said,
"What did you do with the tattoo?" And he's like, "What? The
'Winona Forever' tattoo?" And I was like, "Yeah, what... I mean,
did you, like, change it or cover it?" And he's like, "No! I
just, y'know, to reflect whatever I just changed it to 'Winona
For Everyone'." Drumshot, please! [Darius obligingly performs
rimshot] Thank you very much...

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't he have it changed to "Wino Forever"?

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if she knows to avoid that guy in Interpol.

Man, there are four guys in Interpol, and every last one of them should be avoided.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I remember hearing that one year at the HFStival around 95, Primus and Soul Asylum were both on the bill and Winona's then-boyfriend Dave Pirner was reportedly looking for or threatening Les Claypool, and Claypool took pains to explain that the song is "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," no relation to Winona.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 23 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)
